[SuSE Linux] PPP has me flummoxed!

<PRE> All, I am a newbie to Linux, and installed SuSE 5.3 about 7 weeks ago, followed by a complete re-install of SuSE 6.0 a week later when it hit the stands. Linux is a superb system, and promises me all the power and speed that I've been dreaming of. On the other hand, it is very challenging to install, even for someone like me who is a better-than-average Windows programmer and who is very comfortable with both computer hardware and software. Perhaps I should call it a suitably humbling learning experience. I'm impressed by SuSE as well (I researched Linux for 18 months before choosing SuSE) and especially appreciate their attention to detail. And if you're listening, SuSE, I would be happy to work with you in writing a series of short "how-to's" in newbie-English for simple things like "How to put an icon on your KDE desktop which will allow you to access your floppy." It was the little things like that which had me pulling out my hair in the beginning. My primary problem is that I can never get PPP to work more than a couple of times in a row -- that is, if I can get it to work at all, which is rare these days. I'm sure that it has something to do with my configuration, listed at the end of this mail, and especially with my hostname and machine name configuration. I have a stand-alone computer hooked into an ISP with a modem and have no immediate plans to network with my other Win98 computer at home. Do I even need a hostname or a machine name? I'm totally confused, and it seems that those of us with stand-alone systems are kind of glossed over in the how-to's and man-pages. Another problem is that I get the "cannot determine local host name, use the servername directive to set it manually" message every time I boot up. I plan to take LenZ Grimmer's suggestion to get that fixed up, and I suspect it's somehow related to my PPP problem. A second problem is that diald starts dialing away furiously upon bootup even before I can log on. Again, I will take the advice of others who have posted this month to the list. The final problem is that I can play all sorts of sounds on the media player when I'm in KDE, but KDE itself will only rarely play system sounds when I type in "kaudioserver" at a terminal prompt. I can live without sound, though I should demand it of my system since setting up the soundcard was such a nightmare. I've tinkered this PPP thing to death, am sure that I've bungled it up royally, but greatly appreciate the help I've gotten by gleaning the archives of this list back to early last summer. I only wish I had found this list sooner than about 10 days ago. [SuSE Linux] Kernel 2.2.5 Success!

Greetings SuSE Land, Just downloaded the new kernel from the uk mirror of kernel.org and compiled/installed it without a hitch. (US mirror did not have it yet.) I have a pretty generic setup. busmouse, internal modem, atapi cdrom and drive, and iomega old zip 100 ppa, and a vibra 16 soundcard, v330 video, AFAIK, everything checks out. On SuSE 6.0 BTW, I did not do any extra symlinks besides ln -s linux-2.2.5 linux. On a unrelated note: check out cdcd on freshmeat. It's a cool command line audio cdplayer with cddb support...that actually works. Small download and easy compile install. Take it easy. Steve. [SuSE Linux] CAD-Software

Hi list, My company sells among others a CAD-Software (ArchLine). There are serious attempts in porting the program to Linux. But I need customers who would "promise" to buy this product to enforce the port. I'm sorry that we can't give it away for free, but the programmers (CADLine in hungary) want to live :) The speciall features of ArchLine are : -reconstruction -photogrammetry -masscalculation -countrymodelling -layout -visualisation (p.e. scribbels) [sorry don't know if all translations are correctly :) ] I've a bet running with a collegue that i find at least 10 possible customers for the linux version, so please help me . As far as I can judge it this program is really very good and professional. It's fighting against products like AutoCAD and ArchiCAD, should there be enough consent it would be one of the first professional CAD-products portet to linux. [SuSE Linux] Encyclopedia on Linux

While I was in the Windows world, I used to have at hand one or two encyclopedias (like Britannica). Do you know if such thing exists under Linux platform? At least, to improve my English knowledge, I would need an online explanatory dictionary (like those encyclopedias used to have included). Does anyone know what the present status is for DVD support in Linux? I am referring more to being able to read them at their full capacity, not merely as a CD (650M limitation). [SuSE Linux] from DHCP to STATIC IP

Hello again: This is a second message in response to my post of "DHCP reset" I have a Linux SuSE 6.0 server that has a dynamically assigned IP from my ISP. I've asked that they assign me a static IP which I expect to receive in a few days from now. Could someone suggest/describe what modifications do I have to make to: 1. completely disable the dhcp client 2. assign my newly assigned static IP to my eth0 --------- Am I correct that I am to use YAST and select "NO" to the prompt "Do you want to use this machine as a DHCP client? AND choose System Administration|Network Administration|Configure Base Configuration ...where I can assign the static IP here? -------------- Is this correct? Thanks everyone. [SuSE Linux] DHCP client reset

Hello All: Can I have your opinion on something? With many of your help in this mailing list, I've accomplished configuring a LInux 6.0 SuSE server with an ADSL connection on eth0 and a small network of 3 Win95 clients on eth1. Shortly after doing so, however, my eth0 keeps getting lost and my route tables of which my gateway to the internet exists has disappeared. It seems my dhcp client is resetting and I'm loosing all my settings. [SuSE Linux] kppp again, still :)

Hello all, yep, I figured we hadn't seen enough ppp/kppp requests for HELP! I'm running SuSE 5.3 with an ext. modem on cua1. Using Kppp I am able to dial out and make connection to my ISP. When we go to start ppp, I get a message "The pppd daemon died unexpectedly". I have removed the LOCK statement from the file /etc/ppp/options, I removed the /var/lock/LCK from the Kppp config. I had turned OFF Start_Kerneld from the rc.conf file. The change to the rc.conf file made no change, yes, I ran /sbin/SuSEconfig before re-trying Kppp. I am wondering if the kernel, vs. 2.0.35, has to have PPP compiled into it or will it, PPP, work as a loadable module? I have checked the loaded modules using lsmod and don't see the ppp.o module loaded. How do I determine if the kernel has PPP compiled into it? Is there something else which I may be overlooking here. I'm getting blurry-eyed looking through all the doc's., thank god for all the doc's.! AH yes, one more piece of info., the modules nkita and nkitb series a were selected and loaded. Sure would appreciate ANY suggestions/help.
