Well, if I were going to buy a laptop right now, I'd buy an Asus. The 8k series has nearly 100% GNU/Linux supported hardware. The Good: 12.2-14.4" TFT Active Matrix Screen ATi Rage LT Pro 4mb AGP (XF86-3.3.5, XiG LT) 4.5 lbs. (~2.1kg?) 4-Hour Li-Ion Battery ESS Maestro-2 Sound (Supported by ALSA 0.4+) 3.5-8gig (=<8mm form factor) ATA33 Disk 24x CD-ROM or 6x DVD-ROM Floppy can be installed *with* CD 32-160mb of RAM The Bad: Most models have 56k Lucent HSP modems. Asus is tight-lipped about which NIC chipset they use. Only one Type-II PCMCIA slot. The Ugly: Some lower models use SMI video chipset, which requres a frame bufffer X server and kernel. Hello friends I'm using SuSE Linux 6.1 for authentication with RADIUS and I'd like to get some security in this machine. When I install a minimum configuration, SuSE Linux create some users even though I'm not using some packages like Adabas, DNS, Squid... [SLE] 2.2.12 Kernel and OSS

Hi everyone, After trying 6 times, I finally compiled 2.2.12. So i can take use of minor bug fixes in the kernel and secondly the stock kernel that came with 6.1 was compiled for 386 ( am i right?). Well it took me a while to get it working but i finally booted up new kernel. And i saw two problems. 1. error in IPmasquerading.. it tells me that ipmasq modeule failed because it is not enabled in the kernel and i know have .. how can i fix it? I would like to use linux machine to share it's dialup access with one other laptop running either win 98/linux ( depends on my mood) 2. I tried installing OSS driver on CD. But apperently they are all compiled for kernel 2.2.7. How can i make them work with new kernel? Or do i have to go back to old kernel? 3. sorry there are more questions than 2. I have a pretty standard setup. P-166,96MB ram, Millenium card and 15" monitor, standard EIDE HDD and CDROM SB AWE64. Do I get any advantage running 2.2.12 vs 2.2.7? If i don't see any gain in this kernel then i may well go back to 2.2.7 i am sure my OSS driver will work fine. 4. But I figured out why I was having problems before. Half the time when I go to choose an output device there are no devices listed. Usually if I restart my window manager (usually WindowMaker) /dev/dsp will appear. Just click on the - sign next to Output Device, and hope that one of your sound devices is there, click on /dev/dsp for instance, and click on Open. Then click on Load, navigate to a directory with wav files, and choose one. You can change the bpm. And then for each track click on which beats you want a particular sound to hit on, and hit the play > button. Have a lot of fun. I was playing with the Homer sounds from Gnome-homer last night and it was pretty interesting. I used belch.wav, doh1.wav, and wahoo.wav and me and my wife were cracking up. And if you speed it up you can get some pretty wild sounds.
