[SuSE Linux] help: building new kernel

[SuSE Linux] Network Problems with a Linux Cluster

Hi all, I'm using a 4 PII Linux cluster. One of the nodes has two NICs, in order to allow connectivity with the outside. Almost everything is fine (the static routing table selects one NIC or another, and telnet, http, ftp, and all the normal protocols between this node and the outside work fine), but I'm having problems with X connections. If, when connected to the cluster, telnetting, for example, I set the DISPLAY variable and try to open any window in the client, everything works for the first seconds, but after that, it hangs, and the "route" command takes a lot of time to produce the routing table, that has been altered (the gateway -because on the LAN one of the NICs is connected to there is one- is no longer there). The "routed" daemon is not running, so the routing table shouldn't be altered. Maybe there is some kind of connection timeout, but I don't know exactly where or why. [SuSE Linux] Xanim and PS printing troubles

No, the two problems are not related, but I decided to include both questions here :-) First of all, has anyone gotten xanim to recompile with the additional modules? I'd appreciate any help. My second problem is printing PostScript on an HP LaserJet 1100. I have a document that has four pages compressed onto one page and uses a landscape orientation. When I send it to lpr, though, it tries to print it in portrait mode, cuttng off half of the page. It seems to print fine on the Solaris machines on an HP LaserJet 5si in the labs... [SuSE Linux] shlibs6 package under 5.3

I seem to be having a whole whack of problems with this package I installed from my 5.3 CDs. Under "Series a" in YaST's package manager there is a package called shlib6 which contains shared C libraries for glibc2. Since I had some programs which I wanted to run which were compiled and linked under glibc2, I installed this package (in addition to the existing libc5 package). After installing, I noticed (to my horror) that I could no longer compile anything. Any time I tried to make something, the process would abort complaining that it could not find ANY include files, even though they existed. The errors would look something like this: In file included from /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xlib.h:52, from common.h:43, from bodyPart.c:21: /usr/include/sys/types.h:4: linux/types.h: No such file or directory I've tried removing the package, running ldconfig to rebuild the database, re-installed the libc5 binaries, gcc, and I've even restored my entire /usr structure from a tape backup, all to no avail. Does anyone know what is going on? Does anyone know what package causes the bug that crashes Gimp with the new xservers for matrox / associated stuff (xsvga/xf86/xfsetup)? [SuSE Linux] Libc5 and glibc2

Kim, I recently upgraded to glibc2.0.6 with all the add-ons. I wouldn't say I'm a beginner, but I'm no guru either. I followed the Glibc2 HOW-TO (section 5 - Installing Glibc as the primary C library) to the letter, and the installation went completely faultlessly. It took a while, but it worked, and I was ecstatic (to say the least) when the "Hello World!" program worked at the first time of asking. Get a hold of the glibc2.0.6 sources and all the add-ons (crypt, localedata, and linuxthreads), and have the HOW-TO open in xless at the same time as you have an xterm open to type in the commands. Provided you don't have an overly complicated setup, you should be able to just step your way through it according to the HOW-TO. My congratulations and thanks go to Eric Green, who wrote the HOW-TO, for an easy-to-understand-and-follow and readable account of how to replace a fairly critical system component. Everyone who used this document owes Eric a beer!
