[SuSE Linux] Adjusting the Volume...

Hi All I finally got around to compiling sound support into my kernel (never needed it, but I've been playing with Window Maker this weekend) and it sounds great, but it's way too loud. What program(s) should I have installed to control the volume? I don't have anything installed from the 'snd' section of the CDs. Anybody using Window Maker? [SuSE Linux] Partitions For A New Installation

Hello! I'm a Linux user for one year, until now I have had Windows in one hard disk (hda) and Linux in the second one (hdc) just with two partitions: root and swap. Now I am going to install Linux S.u.S.E. 5.3 as the ONLY operative system in both hard disks. My computer is a Intel-Pentium 150 Mhz, 64 Mb RAM, 2 HD of 2.5 Gb each. There will be no network. I would like to know which partitions would be the best ones. If you want to get hold of QT1.42 + KDE 1.1pre1, you will find that the SuSE rpms are not ready... yet while the Redhat ones are much easier to get hold of. Having said that, the Suse versions of the RPMs (talking about KDE) are a bit nicer and probably they are too busy right now getting 6.0 out in English, and there are small revisions for rpms every second day, so one can probably wait for a couple of weeks more to get the same thing nicely packaged. I would stick with SuSe for many reasons despite RedHat been the standard. Standard doesn't mean better, if you are not convinced have a look at Windoze. [SuSE Linux] Sax

Can not get Sax to run properly, nor get X-server running. Pentium 75 32m Ram (Built in garage) Intergraph Intense 3D PCI Video Card Dell UltraScan 15LR Monitor Sax states its scanning PCI bus, I hear the monitor switch modes and all goes blank and stops. Computer appears to freeze and reboot is only savior. Any help would be appreciated. [SuSE Linux] booting multiple distributions - additional info

I have been able to boot multiple distributions now without copying kernels back and forth. I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions. Here is what I did. I booted into suse and copied its lilo.conf to the /mnt/redhat/etc directory. I went to redhat, compiled a kernel, ran zlilo. When I rebooted I actually saw redhat's vmlinuz and not suse's. My suse lilo.conf was generated by yast. It looks like this: # LILO Konfigurations-Datei # Start LILO global Section boot=/dev/hda #compact # faster, but won't work on all systems. read-only prompt timeout=100 vga = normal # force sane state # End LILO global section # Linux bootable partition config begins image = /vmlinuz root = /dev/hda2 label = linux # Linux bootable partition config ends # # Linux bootable partition config begins image = /mnt/redhat/boot/vmlinuzr root = /dev/hdb1 label = redhat Now when I enter suse again, I dont see my kernel. I see redhat's vmlinuz. Its kinda obvious. I then run lilo in suse and it reads my kernel in /vmlinuz and gives it back. The two lilo.conf files are identical. I did not symlink them. I just did a copy. Now when I go to compile a redhat kernel, I can run make zlilo because there is a lilo.conf there. If you skip the lilo process in redhat it creates nothing there. I could not find a way to move the zImage in the /usr/src/linux/blah/blah/ directory to vmlinuz without running zlilo or lilo. I think lilo is necessary and you need to have a work around to do this or install kernels and add mount points to your suse fstab. I only mention this as a matter of interest for folks thinking about testing other distributions. [SuSE Linux] *The* Expert

Hello, Thank you to everyone who has helped me to configure my SuSE Linux system. I've nearly finished. I just have to do a bit more editing :) My problem with the two white vertical lines was solved by an international team of scientists the like of which only Nasa could afford. In fact, some of them are Nasa astrophysicists and planetary environmental experts. I am now *the* expert on S3 Virge DX graphics cards. A Mr Koenig wrote to me on behalf of XFree86.Org from physik.uni- tuebingen.de (Inst.f.Theoret.Astrophysik) and explained that I should insert the line "Option "sw_cursor"" in the /etc/XF86Configuration file under "Section "Device"". Problem solved. I can now move on to more mundain things like sendmail configuration and other things :-) Should auld acquaintance be forgot.
