[SuSE Linux] 5.3 is going, going...

If anyone could explain why sound is completely broken in 5.3 I could use some help. I have been compiling sound as a module since 2.0.29 and I have always had a perfectly functioning system. 5.3 won't load the module unless I manually insmod it, and then midi is still completely broken. I downloaded fresh 2.0.35 source to see if it was the 5.3 sources, but it's something else in the os because it displayed the same behaviour. This is _really_pissing_me_off_. I have compiled dozens and dozens of kernels since I started using S.u.S.E. with S.u.S.E. 5.1 and I am not doing anything differently and I am 4 kernels into 5.3 and none of them have had properly working sound. On a happier note, SaX is a very good idea, but I get a corrupted image when I set up x with it. [SuSE Linux] Configuring named

I am on SuSE 5.2 and I need to configure name service to establish a couple of local host names on my network even though I have only a dial-up connection to the Internet. The SuSE bind package requires almost no configuration. Basically you just tell YaST that you want it, hang 127.0.0.1 in the IP address and your system host name, take the automatic SuSEConfig and start using it. But now my local host names--how closely can I follow the DNS HOWTO? I see a couple of immediate variances: no /etc/named.conf and /var/named/root.cache appears to serve the same function as /var/named/root.hints. What I need is actually *just one* additional local host name so Netscape will see it and not go looking for it on the Internet. Can anyone help me with that? Well, there are two type of Linksys PCI cards, the I and II. The I is tulip based and the II is ne2000 based. Both are supported. well linux central says my suse 5.3 is shipping monday. i'll see if thats rite. Looking forward togetting it. Got my copy today, copied my system on the tape drive, set 5.3 up and it is working A-OK ! No problems yet and sound works great with OSS. Sending this from Ishmail, my favorite mail client under WindowMaker and Gnome ! Thanks for including these. I like the updates and will be looking into the changes. As someone said earlier on this list, Linux is a hard-hat area. There is still a lot of construction going on. That is why I have two boxes setup. One to work on and the other to experiment with. I will never commit to a new release until it has been proven on my experimental box which right now has Red Hat 5.1, latest snapshot of KDE and the 2.1.119 kernel. I'm on vacation this coming week and I'm going to install Debian 2.0 and try that out. Regarding any criticism I or any other S.u.S.E. users have expressed over 5.3, I hope Lenz and Hubert know that I have nothing but respect and admiration for them. 5.1 and 5.2 were so insanely robust and stable we, I, became spoiled. This os was still beta last I checked, and almost every piece of software I use is alpha or beta. S.u.S.E. did not intentionally put bugs in 5.3 to ruin my week, in fact, if I used OSS and didn't use a joystick I would very likely be singing the praises of 5.3 right now. Ok, I give up. I must be "deaf and dumb" in both eyes! Where can I find the Matrox server?!!!!! SuSE "says" I should install the Matrox server, instead of using the SVGA server. I've looked "high and low" for it in the packages, and it's NO WHERE to be found!! Lenz.....someone else, where'd you hide it?!! Hi SuSE'ers! Any chance to get the AWE32/64/etc...(?) utilities and a few soundfonts into the distribution starting with 6.0? They are found at -> <A HREF="http://bahamut.mm.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~iwai/midi.html"><A HREF="http://bahamut.mm.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~iwai/midi.html</A">http://bahamut.mm.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~iwai/midi.html</A</A>> <- and are really quite essential for reaching the max with your AWE. As I have outlined in a couple of other messages, it seems the AWE Synth will only work when initialized with a soundfont (even an 'empty' one like synthgm should do). It would be very nice to not have to go through your old CD-collection or jump on the internet all the time for these utilities and soundfonts. Personally, I like the chaos8mb soundfont a lot, but the utilities are what is important. BTW: There are AWE-native programs there as well, for playing MOD's etc. natively. I'd like to see those included also. After all, the AWE *is* rather widely used in these times.
