By default all serial interfaces have a max speed of 38400bps under linux. As long as you can't talk only at 38400bps to your modem, you'll never get a 56kbps connect... You can change this behavior by setting the devices max rate with 'setserial': setserial /dev/ttyS1 spd_vhi This means if a process asks for 38400 bps it get 115kbps. Remember that you still have to ask for 34800! See 'man setserial' for more details. To have this settings at boot time, you can place the serserial calls in /sbin/init.s/serial. I use a (PCMCIA) K56Flex modem and get K56 connects whitout having a special PPP script, but with setting the device to spd_vhi... One way to solve this is in the setup of the printer itself, on the printer (check the manual for the printer), let LF= CR + LF or something like that, I had to do this for my deskjet 500 compatible printer a long time ago so it's a bit foggy in my mind. I remember though printing through windows still worked ok when the printer was in this mode. Actually, now that we're on this subject, I don't know why DOS file don't get rid of the CR since it takes up extra space. But that has got to do with some long history I guess. -- Lou A. Another thing about YaST and NIS: even though I set the USE_NIS_FOR_RESOLVING flag in rc.config to "yes" YaST does not edit host.conf to include the line "order hosts,nis" as should be expected but leaves it at "order hosts". Thus NIS would not be used for name-resolving. But then again at least here it realizes that this was changed manually and just stores its version in host.conf.SuSEconfig as you described above. I have an HP660Cse, and here is my printcap. This printcap sits on a dialup gateway, which is actually a Slackware machine with Apsfilter, and handles remote print jobs from a SuSE 5.1 client. I have a 'generic printer' defined manually for pass through printing, and any Postscript jobs, say from a Netscape or Word Perfect job use the other definitons. [S.u.S.E. Linux] ftp SuSe install

I would like to give SuSE a test-drive before sending in my $50, and was thinking of doing an ftp install if possible. Could someone explain how to do this? Can an FTP install only be done on a box with a permanent network connection, or can it be done via modem? I would have to do the install via modem (ppp with a dynamicly assigned IP). Still possible? I am currently running Slackware96. Is it possible for me to log into my existing system, connect to the Internet and then invoke the SuSE installation? What are my options?
