Hi Robert, I'm not so sure under Linux ('cos I haven't done it yet!), but under other flavours of unix, there is a kernal parameter called something like "nfiles" which will limit the number od files open at system level (not user level if you need them to be used by the db daemons). Once you have increased this parameter, you will need to recompile your kernal & reboot. [SuSE Linux] libc / glibc / glibc2 and SuSE 5.3

There has been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing about the libc, glibc and glibc2 libraries on SuSE linux 5.3 and the 6.0 beta - particularly with regard to Star Office. Well I can live without Star Office I think, but I urgently need to install the Oracle 8.0 software and I'd also like to try building the mozilla browser to see if it's any more stable than Navigator 4.06 and 4.5. The problem is these require a glibc2-based system and I'm running SuSE 5.3. What I've read makes me think that if I install the glibc2 libraries then lots of things will stop working unless I recompile virtually the whole system. Is this true? is there any way around it? I'm unwilling to risk the stability of my whole system to achieve these goals but I'm reluctant to go back to using RedHat. The glibc HOWTO shows how to install glibc2 from a source code tarball. I'd rather have rpms for both the development support packages and the lib binaries as there would surely be less to go wrong then. The mozilla instructions say you need to install the RedHat glibc2 rpms but I'm far from sure this will work on my SuSE 5.3 system - at least without breaking loads of other stuff.What I want is SuSE rpms really I suppose. Can I use SuSE 6.0 beta glibc2 rpms? Would I run the same risk with these anyway? Judging by the volume of related correspondence on this list, what we desperately need is a SuSE linux v5.3 glibc2 conversion HOWTO. I doubt this will be forthcoming from SuSE as they will want people to buy SuSE 6.0. Is there anyone out there who has installed oracle or built mozilla on SuSE 5.3? If so please share your knowledge. I've posted technical support to this list myself quite a few times now so I don't feel too ashamed to ask.... It would be a start if someone could just define what libc glibc and glibc2 are, in terms of the files they each comprise. for instance, didn't glibc originally go by the name of libc6? What are the effects on kernel compilation if I install glibc2? And is there somewhere I can read a technical summary about all these libraries and the differences between them? Help! [SuSE Linux] Unzipping .Z files

I downloaded a file from the SysAdmin magazine ending in tar.Z. But I cannot unzip it with gunzip. Can anyone tell me how to unzip the file? [SuSE Linux] Sendmail Confi???

I am accessing my isp's mail server via a Win98 system running wingate proxy server software. I can't figger out how to setup sendmail to properly send/receive mail. I've been using xfmail and netscape mail and that works fine using the following settings: mpt mail server name: wingate (name of the proxy machine) pop account name: user_name#isp_mail_server_name (# format needed for proxy) Is there a way to get sendmail to work through the proxy??? Hi, I am giving suse 5.3 a try. I have used redhat, caldera, and debian and I have never had as much of a hard time setting up ppp as i am having with suse. I am trying to use kppp and everytime i connect it will not get past my ISP saying "no carrier". I have not done anything different than in the other distro's I have set up. I cannot get suse's pppconfig to work either. Any Idea's. [SuSE Linux] Using xgrab or xgrabsc in SuSE 5.3

I've tried several times (both as a user and root) to perform a "screen grab." I tried xgrabsc and xgrab. xgrabsc (when used without any parameters or options) gave a "Segmentation fault" error msg. xgrab brought up it's "dialogue" box, and none of the choices that I tried (probably about 20 different combos, all supposed to print to a *.dmp file) brought a *.dmp into existence. Am I missing something simple here, or are these programs not quite ready for prime time? I've not done anything in the way of serious upgrading of SuSE. Any help is appreciated.
