[SuSE Linux] Some Comments regarding S.u.S.E. Linux

Hi All, I know I should send feedback to S.u.S.E Inc. rather than posting it to this mailing list. However, I was thinking that these problem could be something I'm having :)) First of all, I love the way S.u.S.E packaged their Linux with KDE and so on. I don't think I wanna go back to any other distribution. Ok, let me talk about the problems, and then I'll say what I like to see :) 1. In the newbie installation (Install from the scratch) --it didn't install PPP (not to mention suseppp)--- l8r I had to manually install it. When I reinstalled the whole Linux again, I browsed and found that PPP was not selected either. Ok, they may leave that as an optional thing because some people may not connect via modem. Well, during configuration, YaST does ask if you want to configure modem---then was SLIP installed by default? I guess newbie shouldn't have to encounter that since most of the linux users uses PPP now days. 2. After the installation is complete, system boots up and I get login prompt. No GUI cause my X server wasn't configured??? When they have cool stuff like SaX, why this wasn't a automatic thing?? They could implement XF86Setup ( which would give the autoprobe option) 3. I wish they'd implement a prompt (gui would be nice) which would ask ---Do you want KDE, FVWM, and so on on boot (so newbie wont have to type it manually note: When I click on startx as root, it launches FVWM2 and when I type startx as user, it launches KDE. If I try to run KDE manually as root, it generates an error (I can't remember) 4. Oh I would love to see a Undo option. I see a Abort option, but something (I can't remember specific ) I've done and I clicked on Abort and kinda messed up the few changes I've made. Ok, Now there's something I thought could point that out.... once again, this could be "user error" -->my problem :)) ----S.u.S.E must separate German Distribution and English distribution completely. a. When I loaded the default package during Install from the scratch---I browsed the selection and found out that it had some German manual, help files selected besides the English ones... I guess that's why I saw some German instruction ;p b. Why there isn't a S.u.S.E Newsgroup?? Almost all the distribution has newsgroups, but why not S.u.S.E (may be one for German and one for English) Note: I know I sound too greedy. Now that Adaptec is putting out the specs to the higher end cards I might just wait a bit, since a bigger hd is in my future. ;) A bootable hd or cd-rom is a nice addition. Right now I'm running a 2 and 2.5GB EIDE's with a 32x cd-rom, which works fine..., but I'll need more space shortly, so adding a 10GB SCSI (whatever..UW, etc) and transferring the old drives to two systems laying around here would work. [SuSE Linux] two major question...

the first question is about firewalling SuSE 5.3, i've read the docs and found the example very usefull cause it's very similar to my conditions so i've setted up my policy like the docs show so the system seems to work (the other PCs can reach the internet) bu tat boot time when the service is started gives me an error on "... socket failed" i can't remember and in /var/log/* nothing talk about it. Can anyone explain me what does it means cause i don't matter about socket ? Second is for ISDN device, a Teles S0/16.3 passive card which at boot time is initialized correctly but al shutdown when the system try to unload the module give me an error on ... " cannot locate char-major-68 device... " after that it gives me some possibility that can have caused this error... like "kernel that does not support device major then 64... etc" Any hints is appreciated. Linux as a web server, ISP, or a home system, yes I would. I would rather trust a commercial product rather than linux when my job depends on it. I do believe that Linux is much better for home use. I don't think so. I have SuSE, SCO and Solaris running on my machines and I can't see very much of a difference in any of them. They differ when it comes to commands, but all-in-all they are pretty much the same. Linux is a great way to learn Unix. [SuSE Linux] slow telnet service.

Hi , Recently I 'm having problems to telnet to one of my machine on the local network. The machine responce it's very, very slow... any idea why, or could sombody suggest me what to check or how to debug the problem ? I recently disable all the services (a part from telnet) on my inetd.conf file since then the connection takes ages. I disable root access and created a new account which I use for telnetting the machine. Do I need to enable any package in conjunction with telnet? I also had similar problems setting up my USR Sportster Flash. (The problem seemed to go away by itself...) I was given a number of Initialisation strings by kind people on the list - but, for what its worth, whether I used a long complicated string or just "ATZ" didn't seem to make any difference! [SuSE Linux] Need pppd hints please

I did a install (the one for the newbie) and it installed everything successfully. I had some problem with the X, but sax took care of that problem. However, my PPPD daemon wont start automatically. My modem is configured just correct---I can run minicom and get modem tone (I even get the authentication too) and atz passes ok. But there's no PPP. Under KDE, the utility that holds info for all the services, doesn't include PPP(BTW, Never knew there could be something that awesome window manager out and people dying for some other crap) anyway, it seems to me that I did not load the PPP package because I don't have /etc/suseppp find / -name suseppp (No file or Directory) How/where can I install that package from? (Which CD?) What would be the easiest way---I would like to know if there's anything under KDE to install it easily? Ah, just tell me anyway to resolve this issue:) Thanks ahead. **************************************************** Second problem is not priority at the moment, but if you happen to have the answer, please tell me how can I resolve this. when I login as my user account, I type startx (it takes me to K Desktop) When I login as root and type startx (it takes me to fvwm2)---if I manually try to run KDE, it will give me error message (can't remember the error message) I configured it 3-4 times using SAX and everytime it finds my adapter and everything. Do I have to edit any file like /etc/securetty or add one? I have a two button Microsoft PS/2 mouse (the bottom of the mouse says it is a Mouse Port Compatible mouse, but I have it in my PS/2 connector). In sax, under the mouse tab's test area, when I click the left button, the left square on test-area diagram turns black. When i click the right button, the right square turns black. When i click the the two buttons together, the middle square turns black. This is what i expected to happen. When i start X, though, the right button on my mouse acts as the middle button, and I have to click the two buttons together to get the right-button functionality (which i use frequently in KDE). I've now got it as far as dialing and trying to Login to the ISP's Network but the following error is reported in /var/log/messages: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0 Using interface ppp0 Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests Connection terminated ioctl(TIOCNXCL): I/O error Exit. My pppd timeout in kppp is set to 90 seconds, and my modem timeout is set to 120 seconds. My modem is a US Robotics 33.6 VoiceModem. Hi all, I'm using Gimp 1.0 which came with SuSE 5.3. Surfing around Gimp's site I read about a way for using lots of fonts even TrueType fonts. In order to do that I'm supposed to install xfsft. I must admit that the instructions to compile xfsft are not very clear (at least for me), furthermore consider that I am a bit scared to play with Xserver since I damage my monitor...well, there was the complicity of Sax forgetting it is just a program executing my directions...okay just keep it short...I would like to receive some tips or some suggestion before facing xfsft compilation or if there is a different solution to the fonts problem. If you can ping anywhere using ip's only?----> then it sounds like you have a DNS problem. Make sure you have your nameservers setup in /etc/resolv.conf, and /etc/host.conf has something in it like hosts, bind If you can only ping the first ip hop out, I don't know. (Or invoke: /etc/suseppp/scripts/ppp-up <something> debug ) If there is a /var/lock/L* file for your modem existing before you dial, then you should rm it or something. I am interested in finding out what the latest (stable) version is of dvips. I am running SuSE 5.1 (no glibc). No, it's far from the norm here. Though we DID get hit with some spam about a month ago, those are the extent I've seen in several months on this list. (The previous spammer has had reason to regret it as their higher domain was contacted (a little something about 100+ of the same spam at one time)... Edit your /etc/suseppp/generic.options dialing string a bit. It seems that the 3Com Impact IQ external doesn't quite know it's supposed to be in PPP mode and the documentation is QUITE a bit lacking. Perhaps SuSE could put it into the SDB? For the dialing line: ATDT change to: ATS71=1DT<isp phone number>. THAT will put you into PPP mode. Setting S80 will give you either 1B or 2B. Setting S80=0 gives you 1B mode, S80=1 gives 2B mode. I swap my options files depending on need (I usually use 1B mode since it's a bit cheaper...) by renaming the files, but could do some fancier stuff if I felt lazy enough to script it... :) Oh, don't bother compiling in I4L modules as the external TA is treated as a modem. I don't have the ISDN modules in at all and things work nicely. Though I *REALLY* have got to get a 16650 card for the TA, 115200 is a bit slow for ISDN...
