But be carefull when you select the kernel to install on the HD. The Descriptions are shifted on place down, starting at the label below the second AIC kernel (this one is no longer on the disc, but we forgot to remove the label...). If you can not boot the installed system, use the Bootdisk/CD, load the needed modules, and start the installed system. Then build your own kernel and use this one for booting the machine... There is another bug with the ramdisk while installing the system. But this one appears not very often. The system may crash or hang while or after partitioning in YaST. So use fdisk on the second console for partitioning... We also ordered several copies of 5.1 for our lab machines, but they have not yet arrived, and I assume are delayed for the new 5.1 release. If possible, I'd like to install the version of 5.1 that I have in the next week or so, on several machines, and am wondering if there anything in particular I should watch out for in this first release? I checked the SuSE web page, but didn't see any information beyond an announcement of the Dec 23 release date. To use K56 Modems on a linux box, you have to set your serial port in spd_hi or spd_vhi mode, otherwise the max speed to your modem is limited to 38400: etserial /dev/modem spd_vhi The right place to do this is /sbin/init.d/serial ! XISP works excellent under S.u.S.E. 5.0 & 5.1. I have used it and probably will until we get our cable modem service here. To compile a version for you box, un-pack into a working sub-directory; I have named simply "work" for this stuff. Using guzip -dc xisp-2.3p5.tar.gz | tar xvf - I decompress. Then use a text editor and comment out the vars in the Makefile like this: # Normal vars #------------- #BINX11 = usr/X11R6/bin #USRLOCAL = usr/local/bin #SBINDIR = usr/sbin #VARRUN = var/run #USRLIBPPP = usr/lib/ppp #OPTSDIR = usr/lib/ppp #MANDIR = usr/X11R6/man/man1 #ETCPPP = etc/ppp #DESTDIR = #GROUP = uucp #GCCFLAGS = -Wall -O #EXTRALIBS = And uncomment the RedHat vars like this: # Red Hat vars #-------------- BINX11 = usr/X11R6/bin USRLOCAL = usr/bin SBINDIR = usr/sbin VARRUN = var/run USRLIBPPP = $(SBINDIR) OPTSDIR = etc/ppp MANDIR = usr/man/man1 ETCPPP = etc/ppp DESTDIR = $(RPM_BUILD_ROOT) GROUP = root GCCFLAGS = $(RPM_OPT_FLAGS) EXTRALIBS = Then save as Makefile and as root (su to root), just type make in the working subdirectory you decompressed the file in.
