Hi folks, I'm writing up an article with the aim of encouraging non technical people to participate in projects. I'm trying to keep the tone very light and fun. It's just a dump of ideas right now and needs to be structured. I have no idea where I'll submit it. Possibly Linux.com, or maybe a print magazine (Linux Format?) Please feel free to add your suggestions/comments and if you add much material, leave your name for due credit. If you have any good quality, publishable images taken at events these would be great too. If anyone has a non-technical partner who regularly participates in FOSS work I'd be very happy to hear their comments. Hi all, Some days ago on the IRC it poped out that I would be writing a small article for openSUSE Build Service. In the past days I've took the opportunity to take a closer look into OBS from a scope that isn't mine, the one from a developer/packager. I've signed up for the opensuse-buildservice list, picked a cool soundtrack (Moderat/Aparat/Paul Kalkbrenner), and two packages. notify-osd > a replacement for notification-daemon[1], and to make it more interesting picked up leolik patch[2] alongside, which has been criticized hard by Mark Shuttleworth. This patch allows the bubble of notify-osd to be customized by the user, functionality that Shuttleworth doesn't want out off the box in Ubuntu. A good candidate for all the other distro's, lets make the difference ;) notifyconf[3] > A small tool to customize notify-osd written in Qt (go figure that out). I've struggled, squeeled, but also conquered and the packages in my home repo[4]. I'm going to pick a cool project and then try to make them through to openSUSE:Contrib. During all this process I've been taking notes, gimping for help here and there and checking out the problems usually people have and making notes of the documents people point to me. Once I've finished the process, getting my packages approved or not into the repo, I'll start scribing the article (I would assume depending on answering times this would take 1 or 2 days more). So here's the deal: * Andreas, want to be my wingman on this? I am aware you have in your possession some interviews to be processed. We can use them. I would also need a small talk over IRC if possible (10/20 minutes) so I know how you want to present OBS, to whom you want it to be appealing to, and pretty much the stuff you want to promote. For the 'new user' experience I'll base it on my own adventure. Also any interesting information you can provide would be great. * Marketing Team, is it possible that we create a simple Marketing Banner/Badge, whatever to create a wiki template for Marketing articles? (flag the article, print the article and inform the readers our Marketing is alive and kickin'). * Artwork Team, could you provide such banner? * Wiki Team, could we have such template? I would also like to know what would be the best place to file this article on the current wiki structure. * Editorial Powers, need someone to review it later, and to make it more english friendly. I have really no schedule for this (only proves that I'm a poor marketeer), but I would point for a final release soon before the conference (as it can be used in the conference). I'm running some extra qualitative research also through some interviews with current packagers/contributors to get some more material to support some claims. PiratePad coming soon. Dear all, During November {22,23,26} I'll be giving a small introduction to Free Software and GNU/Linux in the local high school. This will cover 43 students on the IT branch. Regarding the event itself it's organized as follows (it's pretty much informal): Session #1 - Introduction (50 + 50 mins) - Introduce Free Software; - Install a Linux Distribution (was actually thinking on using openSUSE 11.3, free choice GNOME/KDE). - Software Repositories and Package management. Session #2 - Free Desktop and Productivity (50 + 50 mins) - Configure and tweak GNOME/KDE; - Introduction to productivity applications; Session #3 - Collaboration & Aftermath - Collaboration across Free Software; - Developing skills and interacting with FOSS Communities; - Aftermath (includes grabbing all the feedback we can use, small group session informal talk with the students). The dates are 90% sure, but they might be changed, as there were concerns in trying to make this on a week where they don't have evaluation tests and this part of the trimester is complicated for students. Either way, if there are changes, they will be decided during the next week. From this event we earn: * Feedback; * A cool article for our wiki/blog sphere; * Some local advertising on local newspapers (I can't grant this, but I will push it forward, including on the radio if possible, since this actually for the benefit of the local people). * Some photos, though I don't legally if we can use them or not because they are children (minors), and as a marketeer I would hate to make usage of them. I would probably dodge this issue by asking to have them posted on the school website. What I could use: * Installation Media. * USB sticks (I have those sorted out, a local corporation will sponsor those, all installs and such are going to be made on USB sticks, one per student). Can I get some media shipped to the school? I would rather have it shipped to the Administration of the School than exactly to me. I do have stickers I brought from the conference, so I will be using them as well. Instead of deciding to fork a major desktop, the conference focused on 'collaboration across borders' and the results are showing. [opensuse-marketing] Guerrilla! It has started!

Dear people, Despite I'm a lunatic, I do have cool ideas once in a while. I've spoken with a small number of Portuguese speaking enthusiasts from our community and behind 'closed doors' we organized and pushed in a small guerrilla campaign which isn't in any way associated to openSUSE official sub-projects to diffuse the message: openSUSE is a cool and fun alternative to proprietary software. Why the secrecy around this... because given the latest issues regarding RTFM and polemical blog posts, I believe that this initiative should be under wraps, specially given the sensitivity of some people. The very same initiative is being conducted only in Portuguese speaking countries (Brazil and Portugal) as a test pilot for this more 'obscure' technics. Though we have established a small mechanism and some 'key' members of our community are willing to help giving 1st line support to new users (since we are only testing this on Portuguese speaking populations, we need Portuguese speakers only), we can get some feedback from this. This test pilot will be conducted until the release of 11.4, by that time we will either continue with the current strategy if proven to work, or we will even become more agressive with it. For it we need metrics to measure our efforts. As our communication (also developed under wraps and sensasionalist, and in no way related to openSUSE project or openSUSE marketing) is directing users to #opensuse-pt we will have a sort of quantitative information available. This might not be enough, so I could use metrics from the official infra-struture like number of hits from Brazilian and Portuguese IP's to measure if we're actually having some impact and how it's working out. Where can we find these metrics? Don't bother asking what we're doing, because for now, it won't be said. Hi all, A while ago there was a blog by Nelson on LibreOffice. I had a quick look and thought 'Ok so you don't get the dynamics of Free Software huh'* but didn't think about it otherwise. Then the blog was selected as one of the articles in the Weekly News, put together by the hard work of Sascha and his team. Which tickled of some rough feathers at the LibreOffice camp - as you can imagine after reading the blog. There was a link to an article putting down the LibreOffice efforts (part of openSUSE!) - in an 'official' openSUSE news article! So, I don't really want to discuss the blogpost itself - it's the personal vision of Nelson and I get the point he was trying to get across). Even if his critisism was completely founded and sensible, the question I have is: should it have been in the Weekly news? That is actually something Nelson can surely comment upon: does it make sense, from a marketing perspective, to put your 'dirty laundry' (internal discussions and critisism) out to the world if you don't have too? Frankly, I have had this discussion in KDE as well - some argued that even on Planet KDE, critisism did not belong. Planet, as they saw it, was a communicationchannel OUTWARDS. If you had critique, say it on a mailinglist or in private, use planet for positive comments. I disagreed with that - imho planet is for community discussion and personal views, hence should be open for critisism. But for something like the weekly news, I think it might make sense for the team doing it to think about what their purpose is - yes, informing the community. But those part of it or very close most likely do follow the planet. The weekly news is most likely read by users further away from the project and journalists and such - who don't have to be bothered by infighting or bad news ;-) Yes, I am saying the Weekly News is a great marketing asset - and hence should be treated as such. Comments? As usual, feel free to disagree and fall all over me now - but please end it with a hug :D Jos * so the blog was about the marketing side of the fork. Sure. Still, it was a bit clueless - indeed, from a marketing point it's not smart to create two projects - from the Free Software dynamics pov it's the best thing that has happened to OpenOffice in years and it should've happened years ago... Marketing is clearly secondairy here. And yes, I imagine it would be fun to see the marketing battle. From a FOSS perspective - I just hope it won't take LibreOffice long to win. Hi all, I need some creativity from you all. I've been asked by the UK linuxuser magazine people if I know anyone who could write technical tutorials (eg installing a L.i.f.e thin-client setup) of about 2000 words for them. There might be some payment but that's not a given - they have to eat too. So, we must have people in our community who, maybe with some writing help from us, could do this. How do we contact them? Does anyone have any ideas? I could obviously blog, or ask on -project, but I would like to hear your thoughs too. And if any of you would be willing to work with a techie on such an article, doing some editing and working on wording etc, step up now :D Cheers, Jos

This is a recognizable face at different places. * Corporate identity includes YaST, boot screen, splash screens, wall paper, web presence, banners, posters, flyers... Especially the distribution should have a consistent artwork. * Right now, we have three distinct color palettes: The Novell palette, Jimmac's old palette at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_miscellaneous http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_guidelines and the Bento color scheme. * Palettes break with using gradients * Nuno: It's important to have a person that understands guidelines and explain them (an editor). This person should sign up on artwork. * Nuno: corporate identity creation takes time. Example: oxygen took more than 2 years to reach a common understanding between the three oxygen designers (everything of it has now been replaced). * First thing: Marketing team to define target users and needs, then many talks between art and marketing team. Note that context is important, one color on white is different from the same color on black. * Suggested next steps: 1. Clear strategy to define messaging. 2. Designer will propose something, 3. Marketing folks will review and iterate process until something appears. * Apple has great guidelines. First to break the guidelines is Apple itself. Guys, I know many are busy with OSC10. I been think of a new thing for market. That is to start posting on Free Software Daily. http://www.fsdaily.com/. I have been reading the site for about 4 years. I use to get the Free Software magazine that you could download. The reason I am going to start posting on the site, is to balance the negative post.
