Hey!
During Hackweek 3 Andreas Demmer and I made a new frontpage for
opensuse.org, which will replace the 3-Box-Page we currently have on http://www.opensuse.org
.
The goals of the new page are:
* pickup the visitor at the front-door
* offer more information about the openSUSE-Project on a centralised
page (more; not to much, many, etc., just a overview!)
* stay conform with the openSUSE.org screen-design
* make it easy for newcomers to dig into the openSUSE-Univers.
About the page-design:
The content is always placed in two columns (1/3 to 2/3) and the page
is divided into two halves.
In the top is the eye-candy logo with a short description (we are
still looking for a better/shorter text) of the openSUSE project and
the good old three main sections: software, wiki, build service.
Links to all other o.o-pages are offert at the bottom of the page as
hotwords, so they can be easily found with the filter in your browser
or by scrolling ;-)
The search bar above the the categories is not fully implemented jet.
We plan a selection box (dropdown) in front of the input-field where
you can select the section which should be searched (e.g. like Firefox
search in the top/right corner).
The placement of the search box is carefully chosen. It has a optical
connection to the three sections but there is enough white-space
between the search and the section-chunk to display that they are not
siblings. It's in the upper-right where the most people look for a
search (it's in these area on all o.o-pages).
The lower part of the page contains, in the bigger column,
informations like upcoming events, etc. ... what ever is hot :-)
The smaler column contains the last 5 headlines from news.o.o (updates
every hour), help informations and a link to shop.o.o.
We made a small admin interface to change the content without the code-
hacking and deploying dance.
A localisation is implemented, too. But not deployed now.
You can check out the draft at http://www.suse.de/~rlihm/index.shtml.
We are looking forward to hear your opinions and suggestions.
Best,
Robert

Hi Zonker and all!
During our first meeting (marketing team) I said that the information
for translator are spread over the openSUSE wiki, we don't have a
central point, ok we have the Teams page, but we have one page for the
distro translation (i18n.opensuse.org), another for the wiki
translation (http://en.opensuse.org/Translation_Team) and a third one
for documentation (http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation_Team) been the
last one is with less translations, just english and deutch. And if I
or we want to translate the manuals we have to have a medium knowledge
to get the sources, extract it, convert the .xml to .pot files or edit
the xml itself, translate it and repacking again or create an OBS
account to do that (and learn how to use it)...
And another thing that I can't found for translation are the man pages
for openSUSE especific programs like zypper, yast, locks, and so
one...

Luiz Fernando Ranghetti

We changed few things and get into trouble with the sync-mechanism of
the server. The page will be available again soon.
So long you can take a look on a screenshots I even uploaded to the
wiki: http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/en/8/8f/OpenSUSE.org_FrontpageFF3.png
Thank you for the hint!

Hi all,
I didn't see any major objections, so I'm setting our first official,
real-time meeting for 15:00 UTC on Tuesday, August 26. I'm putting
together the meeting page + agenda now, and will send that URL before
Monday.
If you have any other agenda items, please send them along soon.
Have a spiffy weekend!
Best,
Zonker

Greetings openSUSE marketeers! :-)
I'd like to have an IRC meeting next Tuesday at 15:00 UTC in the
openSUSE-project channel on freenode. Does anyone have an objection to
this time? I'd like to have as many opensuse-marketing participants
involved as possible. I know that this is during Hack Week, but I'd
like to start having regular meetings as soon as possible.
Also, please send any items you'd like to include on the agenda.
Best,
Zonker

This is to hand out a very large bouquet to the despatch people who send
out the OpenSuSE boxed edition.
When I do presentations to SeniorNet groups in NZ
(http://www.seniornet.co.nz) I often get asked about printed manuals. I
tell them there is one available in the boxed edition. However that's
all I've been able to tell them because obviously I use the download
version because there is no local supplier(how do I go about becoming
one is another question for another thread?). In order to be more
informed I splashed out the $NZ100+ and ordered it online.
I put the order in on Friday afternoon local time (1:00am Friday Utah
time), the box arrived afternoon post on Monday!!
By comparison Amazon orders take three weeks. It's actually faster than
ordering from Fishpond, (the local competition to Amazon)
VERY very impressive and an excellent piece of info for future
presentations.
Kudos to the despatch people.
Cheers

Here at Nicaragua, the local opensuse group is forming a design team
First we had mede some t-shirts, and stickers with our local logo =)
But now we want to have a "official openSUSE banner"
That we use every event, or every meeting
Can you provide me some ideas, or a sketch for the design team
We want to keep the SUSE official art-work
Greetings :)

Hi,
[I am writing this mail as Free Software Community Manager of LinuxTag
e.V. not as SUSE employee.]
Like before there will be an area called 'Perspektive Open Source'
(short POS) at Systems [1] dedicated to Open Source and Free Software.
The event will take place October 21st-24th in Munich awaiting about
40.000 trade visitors. [2]
Messe München decided to hand over the selection of free and open source
projects for this area to LinuxTag e.V. Therefore I am asking the
openSUSE marketing team if the openSUSE project is interesting in
getting a small demonstration point within POS.
Messe München and LinuxTag e.V. offer free of charge
* one demo point for a laptop and a large poster
* power supply
* internet connection
therefore we await
* a fully staffed demo point during all visitor hours
* well prepared demonstration concept
* no advertising for commercial products and services
(except a small adequate mention of sponsors)
Cheers,
Marko

Hi Marketing-Team!
In about four weeks a quite nice free and open source conference
(FrOSCon) [1] will open it’s doors for the third time and in my opinion
openSUSE should not be missed there.
Hence I asked the organizers if they can provide the openSUSE project
some space for an openSUSE booth and generously they agreed to this. Now
I am looking for volunteers from the openSUSE community to support me
driving the booth. You should have solid knowledge on openSUSE, be an
outgoing personality and enjoy to share your know how with visitors.
To get an impression how much fun FrOSCon will be, have a look at more
than 600 photos from the initial two events at flickr [2]. I know no
other event that offers for example a bouncing castle [3], free drinks
for pre-registered visitors and a 5 Euro Kölsch-Flatrate [4] at the
social event [5].
If you have some spare time during the weekend on August, 23rd to 24th
and would like to come to Sankt Augustin (nearby Bonn/Germany), you
should not miss the possibility to participate at one of the coolest
free software events in Germany.
So hurry up and drop me a few lines and add yourself to the event
coordination page in the openSUSE wiki:
http://de.opensuse.org/Events/FrOSCon/2008
Unfortunately nobody submitted a talk on openSUSE and the call for
papers of course is finished, because the program [6] is already
published. Fortunately there will be some lightning talks where we
should participate in.
Cheers!
Marko
