Dear Board,
The openSUSE News team has been thinking, and after the pain of doing so had
subsided, we came with the conclusion that the endeavors of our dear board are
by and large interesting enough to share with our community ;-)
Or, in other words, at oSC we met and discussed what regular articles we'd
like to have on news.o.o and one of those was a monthly Board report. Would
you, dear board, be interested in doing that? And if so, what date would you
like to pick for it? Let me arbitrarily propose the 2nd week of every month on
the Thursday... Mail the content on Tuesday at the latest to news(a)opensuse.org
and we'll get it edited and scheduled for the Thursday.
For your convenience, I will try to set up an automated KICK THE BOARD mail
which will remind you a few days before the deadline, simultaneously kicking
ourselves to make sure we don't forget to put it up. My mail client has this
newfangled "send later" feature which can schedule mails, so let's use it ;-)
Hugs,
Jos
Dear GSOC team,
YOU PROMISED a montly GSOC article. And I PROMISED to make a schedule happen.
I failed, you didn't - there was a GSOC progress article ;-)
But now, we should make it a real monthly ordeal, as we discussed at oSC. Can
we? Can we? To help make it happen, I propose we pick a recurring date for the
articles (say, the 3rd week of every month, on Thursday) and a deadline (the
Tuesday before that Thursday). So the news team has time to beat it into shape
and schedule it. And remember, pictures are appreciated!
My fancy mail client has this new 'send later' feature which I'd love to test
on you - I can schedule monthly reminders that will kick both you and the
openSUSE news team to make sure this all happens as planned ;-)
How about it?
Hugs,
Jos
Dear Travel Support Team!
At the openSUSE Conference you committed to doing monthly status updates of
the TSP. Yes, don't bother denying it, we have proof. And several witnesses.
Come clean.
So, if you still feel up to it, I propose to pick a recurring date for the
article, say, the first week of every month, on Thursday. Then a deadline for
sending the article to the news(a)o.o team; let's say the Tuesday before. So we
have time to beat it into shape and schedule it. And remember, pictures are
appreciated, so are links to blogs and such!
What do you think?
Cheers,
J

Shayon!
We decided at oSC that you would write a 'GSOC Success Story' about your OBS
work :P
Still feel like doing that? If so,
<motivational guru voice>Let's make it happen!</motivational guru voice>
;-)
As a reminder, the goal of the article was to show GSOC is super cool; and
showing that by talking about a successful project (your OBS comment thing)
done by an extremely cool student (you) mentored by extremely cool people (no
idea who mentors, Henne?).
So we need some factual info (what was the plan, how is it going, what are the
results), quotes from the cool people involved (student, mentor, GSOC team)
and a few screenshots.
What do you think?

Hello,
My name is Carlos Ortega, I'm the treasurer of the LUG student group at the
University of Illinois at Chicago. Part of what we do is to promote both
the use and understanding of Linux. Because of this we would appreciate if
we could get a hold of some official OpenSUSE DVD's to give out in
our upcoming fun fair.
While I understand that this may not be possible, it would mean a great
deal to us. If this is not possible can you provide information on either
purchasing or making our own DVD's.
Thank You
Carlos Ortega

Hello,
I'd like to ask, if there is any ready made graphics for a roll up. I
looked around on the github repo, but while I found some really nice
material, there was nothing what could be directly put on a roll up (or
at least I could not find it...).
If you have anything, please send me a URL (or complete files off-list).
Thanks, bye,
CzP

Dear Marketeers!
There was a meeting at oSC to talk about marketing, strategy and hugs. Mostly
hugs, of course. Here some notes, courtesy of Izabel (I left the hugs out to
keep it short):
The first three items we could tick off quickly as they are pretty much taken
care off by others:
• Local coordinator / Advocates - in progress by board & ambassador team
• Release marketing: http://board.opensuse.org/projects/opensuse-13-1-release
• Events: TSP + New merchandizing cover this.
∘ Adds list of events to TSP app -- Izabel
• GSOC promo
∘ Goal : Grow!
∘ Issue:
‣ Reputation of low success
‣ Reality of low success rate
∘ Solution:
‣ Celebrate successes
• Articles on News -- GSOC team
• Shayon's work on OBS should be visible on OBS itself -- Shayon
‣ Grow quality -- GSOC team
• Prefer existing Contributors
• SUSE will most likely help with mentoring existing contributors
∘ Must stay umbrella and work with others << Google likes it, we might even
loose our own GSOC slots if we don't do it
• reviving news.opensuse.org => 2 articles/week: Tuesday & Thursday
∘ Create Queue -- Jos
∘ Maintain it with weekly report -- Jos
∘ Regular articles planned:
‣ Monthly Events -- TSP / Kostas
‣ Monthly Board / Team Reports -- Board
‣ Monthly GSOC progress article based on student reports -- Saurabh
∘ Article sources for the rest:
‣ The usual news articles, sneak previews around releases etc -- all
‣ Go over our github and get articles out of there -- Manu
‣ Go over historical articles and revive some for re-use -- Manu / Jos
∘ Concrete article ideas:
‣ OBS article -- Shayon
We also decided that 90% of the talk on the private news ML should move to
opensuse-marketing@ for greater transparency and opportunities for more people
to join our work.
• Strategy
There are strategy discussions again and we should try to prepare how to talk
about them. Of course we don't know what the strategy will be in the end but
we have some clues. We did some brainstorming on key messages and targets for
our communication around the new direction, if and when it is there.
∘ direction things seem to be taking:
‣ FACTORY:
• more stable (tumbleweed-ish?)
• automated testing (openQA in OBS?)
• maybe new name
‣ RELEASE:
• smaller core,
• more quality,
• longer release cycle,
• emphasis on OBS,
• new name
∘ target groups for communication (check articles if they are covered):
‣ Users
‣ Developers
‣ Press
‣ Business
∘ key messages (basic ideas for articles/check articles if they are covered):
‣ Stable, quality, reliable, tested, process
‣ focused, core
‣ learning curve / easy
‣ stays the same
‣ flexible, choice (OBS)
‣ unique
Feedback welcome, help too!
