Hi boosters, The marketing team has been brainstorming on how to give ambassadors a tad more attention in openSUSE; motivate them to make a bit more noise; and reward them for what they do. Now we have a few ideas, but for one, we thought it might make sense to use connect. Yes, it could probably be done via the wiki and other ways but I know you guys have a hammer and might see this as a nail :D *what is the problem* the ambassadors _sometimes_ create event reports. We want those reports for several reasons: - to have an idea of what they are doing - to measure how much we do - to motivate others - to SHOW what we do Unfortunately, not so many event reports are made although we're fairly sure many events have openSUSE attendance. This is due to several issues. *First*, not all ambassadors are so connected to us - many are not 'official ambassador' or their English skills are minimal and they are not internationally involved. I will send a follow-up mail with ideas on how to solve that. *Second*, filling in an event report on the wiki is not exactly easy for many. Some send one by mail - which is fine but leaves little record. *Third*, the reports receive little visibility. They are mentioned somewhere in the weekly news if you're lucky and of course on the marketing ML, but that's it pretty much. Numbers in it are not saved, we don't realy do anything with it as there is no real easy record. *The solution?* Ideally, the reports would end up in a central place, some database... And ideally, they would be connected to the ambassadors - so they can build up a trackrecord of events they have visited. Once we have this we can also show reports on eg news.o.o in a feed box on the side for example, or on our homepage. We can analyze and use statistics (for promo), promote events, do monthly articles - all kinds of things. We have an events page on en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Ambassador_events which suffers from similar issues - most people don't create a page because it is not easy and not localized. *connect.o.o* In short. We wonder - would Connect not offer a much better way of handeling events, event reports and the like? Would it not offer a better place for ambassador user accounts (with associated event reports as track records)? Culd it offer an easy place for ambassadors to add info for an event and afterwards add a report & pictures which we can then display in the planet feed (localized, if needed)? In case you think this is relevant, chuck and manu might have some time to help with this both in 'how to do it' (I would also love to think abou that) and the doing itself. Cheers, Jos

[opensuse-marketing] CzP @ FSF Hungary conference

Hello, Yesterday I was at the annual FSF Hungary conference. It's website is only available in Hungarian: http://konf.fsf.hu/ There were over 500 visitors from all over Hungary. This is traditionally an Ubuntu dominated event, but for the first time there was also an openSUSE booth. I started to organize it quite late, but still there were at least 3-4 people continuously caring for the booth. To draw more people, we had a number of interesting computers on display, all running openSUSE: a large gaming config with KDE and Steam and other native Linux games. There were a also a number of small machines: fitpc3 running Gnome3 and office apps, also a raspberry pi and a CuBox. There were many people visiting the booth, some only for the exotic machines, but most also asked about openSUSE. There were some technical questions (mostly video card related problems), and also the usual "why openSUSE". We did not have any openSUSE 12.2 DVDs (which Kalman ordered a long time ago), but had a few 12.1 and 11.4 disks. Even those old disks found users as many people told us, that they have old machines and they don't need the latest and greatest, rather something what is not sluggish on old machines. We would like to ask the marketing team to publish a small article that announces the wallpaper contest for 12.3. If possible, please add the following lines. The openSUSE Team would like to invite our community and other Linux enthusiasts to participate in our wallpaper contest. We have created a flickr.com page especially made for the reception of images that can be chosen as the default wallpaper for the next release of openSUSE 12.3. On our Flickr page you will find guidelines on what the images' license should be and the appropriate sizes for them. If you plan on submitting images to the contest, please make sure that you understand the guidelines for submission and that, if chosen, you will be asked to make your image ready for packaging. Also, during the this first week the artwork team will take part in selecting the finalists for the contest. We have had a lot of submissions, and having our team select the finalists will bring the amount of images to the best ones. After that, the rest of the community will be asked to vote on the finalist images. The contest will end on December 24, 2012. [opensuse-marketing] Help improve our event list for 2013!

Hi, I'm working to create a list of events around the world that openSUSE might (want to) go to - with associated info like size and target audience. This will help us decide where to send materials and/or people to. And now I need your help... You're the people who go to events, so if we're going to make a list and decide how to support them and how important they are, we need to hear from you! Please, open the google spreadsheet if you can, and spend a little time to add information about events I've forgotten or correct what I have. The ones with green are ones I know are properly in there, the ones with red really need some input - the ones without a color I'm unsure about. If you know about an event and can add the info, make it green - so others don't spend brain cells on it ;-) The numbers mean: how likely are you to talk to (1=very unlikely - 5=very likely): * Business people * Developers * Students * Average users * FOSS knowledge = do the people know what the 'Free' in 'Free Software means (like they do at a GNOME hackfest for example, score 5) or do they have no clue (at a generic tech event, score 1) * How likely are you to bump into international folks (1 = the website is only in $local language - 5 = everyone speaks English and comes from 5 continents at once) * How technical are the sessions (1 = how to use LibreOffice - 5 = kernel drivers are easy) I hope you have some time for this!! Hello Mates, As you probably know, 11.4 reached end of official support. Marcus wrote an e-mail to announce mailing list [1] about 11.4 moving to Evergreen. I didn't see any article on the news about 11.4 and Evergreen or an article about the end of official support of 11.4. I read that Evergreen [2] is a community effort to prolong maintenance of openSUSE after this period of official support.
