Hello,
I'm working on an infrastructure to facilitate ther marketting work. I
understood that it's not the moment to ask for some more openSUSE
thing, so I build it myself. It's based on owncloud
http://dodin.info/owncloud/index.php
to have access, you have to require a passwd, I don't know of any
subscribe mechanism, I have to create the account.
with this account, you can share what you want, photos
http://dodin.info/owncloud/public.php?service=gallery&t=c69f8c45eb0c3a8117c…
for example for artwork
but the last owncloud version also add the capability of google docs
to have a collaborative document
http://dodin.info/owncloud/public.php?service=documents&t=7f72cd4438686372c…
these documents can be private, groupd owned or public
http://blog.karlitschek.de/2013/10/welcome-owncloud-documents.html
this session is on my own server but I may copy it to openSUSE if
necessary anyway it's not on a public server like google.
You even can have a local copy
feel free to test it and use it for serious work, but do not forget to
make backups, the best way being to install the owncloud client

Hey all,
we are drafting the announcements for oSC14 here [1] and your help is
highly needed and appreciated :)
Several things we need to get out there: initial announcement for
oSC14, CfP, and whatever comes along our way.
We have already discussed some things during the conference meeting
and as we get more info we will be adding them in the gdoc. If you
could form them into more attractive announcements it would be
a-w-e-s-o-m-e!
Thanks,
Stella

Dear openSUSE marketers,
on 2014-03-22, the Linux User Group Augsburg will host the Augsburg
Linux day for the 13th time. This is by far not an international event,
but we are the biggest such event in south Germany, expecting 300
people.
There is a copy of the call for participation at the bottom (in German).
Please consider forwarding it to people who might be interested. Thanks!
Best regards,
Ingo (one of the organizers)
Am Samstag, den 22. März 2014 findet der 13. Augsburger
Super-Rechner so ziemlich überall läuft.
* frei, offen und kostenlos.
* Schutz von Privatspähre: Anonymisierung z.B. mit Tor;
Office, Desktops, kollaboratives Arbeiten, etc.
* Mächtige Werkzeuge: Mit der Kommandozeile Abläufe automatisieren.
* Gemeinsam stark: OpenStreetMap, Wikipedia, Bitcoin, etc.
* Vom Smartphone bis zur internationalen Raumstation:
Android, Embedded Linux, etc.
Januar 2014.
Wir freuen uns auf Eure Vorschläge :-)

Hi Guys,
Google Doc = Google Drive, about a year ago Google messaged all
existing Users that Docs would be deprecated, renamed Drive. Although
it doesn't seem to have happened fully yet (Everything is still
labeled Docs although technology migration has likely completed).
Opening a text document from Google Docs/Drive is the same as
etherpad/piratepad. Google bought the technology, IMO the main diff is
that if you use Google Docs/Drive, then there is a bit of
accountability for changes (Who did what?). The re-launched etherpad
and piratepad don't require anyone to identify themselves.
http://www.tech.slashdot.org/story/09/12/19/0059221/google-open-sources-eth…
If you don't need real time collaboration or file management, ie you
just want everyone to get copies of what is available, I highly
recommend deploying as a torrent (the actual torrent file can be
publicly or privately deployed for easy access, or both, or
distributed as a file link or mail attachment, etc). Anyone can change
a file and the changed file would be automatically replicated to all
others.
If you want file change management, I highly recommend Github. Free
for any fully public repositories and easy for anyone to grab copies
of individual files or entire repositories. No limits on storage or
bandwidth. But, IMO the biggest mistake I always see is lack of
planning of how many repositories to make downloads somewhat granular,
eg if you only want artwork, you shouldn't have to download all the
printed material, too. And, of course because GIT stores not only the
new file but every previous version of the file (with the same name)
you can always revert to a previous version (especially good for docs,
but can be useful for other file types as well). Although Google
Docs/Drive also has this functionality, AFAIK it's very limited in
comparison.
If we want to use Github, I can create a simplified instruction page
for how to setup, check out a page, then upload the changes merging
with the existing pages on the Server. Optionally, I can also create a
separate page which can describe the most common Admin type tasks that
might be encountered for our purposes.
Also, with Github, wiki(s) are supported for free. More specifically,
<any> kind of static website (ie billboard type which does not require
login). Similar to the openSUSE wiki, editing is completely
unrestricted to everybody unless someone wants to pay (but IMO it's
not needed). The advantage of building a wiki on Github is to more
easily reference files stored there... Although with a little more
effort, it doesn't really matter if the Wiki might for instance be
located on openSUSE (links would have to be created and maintained
manually).
Speaking of which, I highly recommend using the openSUSE Wiki as a
Wiki platform. Although the GUI editing tool is somewhat limited, it
does support the full MediaWiki syntax, so it's possible to do much
more than many people might think. The only think that can't be
changed is the overall theme (but likely isn't an issue for us).
Lastly, re: Connect although I haven't looked at it recently I imagine
that if we use any existing openSUSE/SUSE web resources that Connect
should support it.

Because the deadline for presentation topics came and went before
there seems to be any real organization yet, I signed up to reserve a
slot to talk about openSUSE.
Jos tells me that Drew will be organizing again this year.
Although I've maintained my own "pocket presentation" on openSUSE over
the years, if anyone has created a finished presentation on 13.1, I'd
appreciate sharing. If you don't already have a central point for this
presentation, I can create one.

Hello,
I think it will be difficult to really start the work before early
next year, but it's time to select some priorities.
for me I see already two:
* *weekly news*. I bet this could be the marketting team framework, so
very high priority (I'm in to work on this)
* goodies. I got a message saying that there are new goddies on the
way. One of the main concern we should have on this subject is how to
have the most effective goodies for the less global price (including
shipment and additional costs) - discussion to follow
* ..
I let you place yours ideas :-). I would be pleased to start next
monday (or sooner) a dedicated discussion on each topic mentioned on
this thread
thanks you!

As I see this subject is hot, I think it's time to open a thread, not
to hijack the task one, so, feel free to give your advice here (I will
give mine later)
thanks a lot, it's a pleasure to see the marketting team at work again :-)

Maybe monthly news would be easier? Workload can be spread through
whole month and just summarize what happened/is going on... I
understand, that weekly newsletter is a lot of work and has tight
deadlines, but easy way to relax it could be prolonging the cycle.
Monthly? Bi-weekly? Just throwing in some ideas

Hello all,
I believe most of us are following the -project mailing list so I
believe we should move on in Marketing too. Project decision is our
concern too!
I've been deeply involved with openSUSE in the last 3 years and FOSS
in general at least 15. That is the reason I believe I can present my
thoughts.
>From my perspective... Any contribution is seasonal and some can at
least stay longer than 1-2 years. Using me, Izabel, as example, I
started in the Marketing Team and I contributed until the 12.3
Release. I did not contributed to 13.1 cause my help wasn't necessary
besides, quoting "Please ping the Artwork Team". On those 3 years I
saw some initiatives about Ambassadors Team, Welcome Team, blablabla
Team and in all of them most of the same people were discussing what
should be the "rules" to start or who would take care of it... The
standards were so high that neither the most valuable contributor
would achive the points to be considerer a mentor or a Ambassador
or... I hope you can understand my points.
Now there is a new "program", hopefuly successful one but has
something writen in the wiki that I don't agree: "Are there rules?
Hey, we at openSUSE don't do rules ;-) "
It looks so careless! We don't do rules but anytime possible we
"start" a program or a group to talk about how to do it. Any new
contributor is totally lost on how to start. #Imlosingsomething
We are marketing, we need to care with the message send.
As Marketing Team we are losing A LOT since we don't have materials to
send around. Just the free will of our Advocates/Ambassadors/members
isn't enough. Yes the DVD's shipment costs were really high but turned
into ZERO didn't help. We became first with the $100 support idea,
nobody used, poor advertise, so we erase the subsidy, later the
Marketing Box, months planning and didn't happen yet. What is next?
We had a great time backing 2-3 years ago, we succeed, lots of new
people joining and lots of people leaving. We need to have
credibility. It is vital.
Lately I personaly, due to TSP, lost the credibility from some great
openSUSEans cause we weren't able to follow our own rules to reimburse
the travel costs within 40 days as discussed with SUSE and promised,
so, rules? Ok, as TSP we need rules to assure the Program is able to
help people to join oSC/Summit or present openSUSE worldwide, but
again, with no marketing materials, with no marketing plans, with no
marketing strategies, besides oSC and Summit, won't be more than a
paid trip.
I've seen many people contributing and I'm thankful for have them
around but there is something that I can't understand. We have people
around that happened to make us proud more than once but why they are
not able to at least be an openSUSE user! Did they love our community
that is why they stay? Do they really believe in openSUSE? Just
openSUSE opened the doors? Since we are a bunch of nice people is that
why they join us? Are we failing having them around since not using
openSUSE? #wearedoingsomethingwrong
My points are to show that we have many aspects to care and work on...
I really hope that you can see something for us to contribute
together.
So, please, stand up who is or wants to be part of openSUSE Marketing
Team. If you do already just mention that you are around, if you are a
simple follower please consider to join and tell us. If you just want
to keep following tell us too cause your view will be necessary to
keep us on track. Any contribution is seasonal. If you can be here now
tell us.
I hope our Artwork Team/Partners are inside Marketing mailing list, if
not please someone call them. Marketing and Artwork need to work
together. We rock better together!
I'm writing now cause many things are being said from few perspectives
and many decisions will be taken. If we don't stand up now we will be
apart from marketing decisions and we will send for the rest of the
project the idea that marketing is just necessary for Release times or
advertise on twitter, facebook or G+! We must to be more than this, we
are more than this.
Where we can re-start.
http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Marketinghttp://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Marketing_team
Please let's move and present a group initiative. We can do better.
Thank you
Izabel Valverde

Hello,
a side discussion from the others we have on this list, is how to
summarize/develop/report our discussion(s) on a manner more permanent
than mailing lists.
Rajko proposes google doc - we also can use google drive in a similar
manner
but I think it could be a positive signal to use an openSUSE system
for this specific work.
But I don't know wich one.
* the wiki? it may be the more natural, but I don't know if it's
adapted for concurrent work like this
* connect? I really would like to make connect the central point of
team members life, but, honestly, I don't know if it czan fit the
needs, not having used it for years
* news.o.o? we probably need a blog system, is this one?
In fact I don't know that well the openSUSE infrastructure. Jos do you
read? idea?
thanks
