I just want to share an idea.
I just heard (on the radio) a comment from a french consumer
association about computers.
Speaking about laptop, the speaker did not use the word "laptop" but
"thouse computers sold with screen and keyboard included" (I try to
translate from french).
I knew openSUSE is not devoted to complete newbies, however... I
wonder is we should not rethink completely part of our messages to fit
people that uses webphones and mp3 readers, but do considere computer
exactly like cars... not knowing any technical langage.
If a people don't know what a laptop is, she may not understand at all
what is a windows manager or a live cd...
May be we should speak of "internet access cd, openSUSE version" or
"Word processing openSUSE version", I don't really know :-)

Hi all,
At the office Robert Lihm together with AJ and Michl (on his last few days...)
have been working on assembling a nice PR kit which we'll send to our
ambassadors. One thing for the kit we thought would be nice was a 'PR-how-to',
basically taking some important info from the wiki like a how-to-organize-a-
launch-party and other things and putting it on paper.
I know that among others Manu and Kostas have been looking at that and working
on it, as has Gnokii and others. Would any of those (or someone else) be
willing to assemble a few of those things from the wiki (including talking
points, the how-to's, FAQ etc etc) in an openoffice doc and send it to me?
Just the text would be OK, Robert makes sure it looks good and we put it in
the PR kit!
Thanks in advance,
Jos
Hi all,
As I promised (but late) I made '2 slide presentations' about SUSE Studio and
OBS. You can find them here: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Presentations
They can be used stand alone (but I would then add a demo or slides with more
screenshots) or as part of a larger presentation.
They pack a lot of info in two slides, think about that! using a few more
slides might be needed sometimes - think about your audience.
I added additional information in the 'notes', so if you give a presentation
you should look at that too to know what else to say.
Point ppl to this if they want to talk about OBS or SUSE Studio ;-)
I would welcome reviews and comments so I can improve them! Translations
might also be useful.
Cheers,
Jos

Have you tried SUSE Studio? Need to create a Live CD, an app you want
to package and distribute , or create your own linux distro. Give SUSE
Studio a try. www.susestudio.com.
Hi all,
Again thanks for participating in the collaboration day on Social Media. I
have written an overview, I hope one of the news editors on this list has time
to take a look and maybe find a pretty picture to accompany our success story
:D
Meanwhile there are a few things which are close to being finished, but aren't
there just yet. My pet peeve: the short descriptions of openSUSE. They are
here: http://ietherpad.com/idAZ997QVS
I have used part of that text to make a start on the two folders that we'll
need:
http://piratepad.net/xKoBE4vmSM for potential contributors
http://piratepad.net/d8xWTUwHq3 for potential users
Both need a lot of work and any help here is appreciated too!
I really appreciated the work done on the feature guide, I worked on it some
more and I hope we can get it a bit further and finish it during the marketing
meeting in Februari. Anyone who has some spare time, check it out here:
http://manugupt1.ietherpad.com/4
I can however hapilly tell you that the article we wanted to write about new
openSUSE projects is pretty much there now - some finishing touches and it can
go live on news.opensuse.org! Great work all involved!
Wow. That's a large bunch of writing things. I know not all of you like that
stuff, so - who comes up with tasks that are less writy? ;-)
Let me name one: we need themes for Identi.ca, Blogger and Twitter! Shouldn't
be incredibly hard to make and I'm sure Robert Lihm, gnokki, Javier and our
other artists can and will help here.
Cheers,
Jos
Hello
an other idea :-)
I know we have an Hadware compatibility list. Could we improve that
with an "openSUSE certified" list?
It could be pretty easy. Some vendors have computers line quite stable
(I use an HP desktop). I would be just the matter of asking the
testers to find some common hardware amoung us and devote some
debugging activity just on this hardware, to have it 100% openSUSE
compatible - simple with an identified test base.
then we could make this model visible on the wiki as a "don't worry"
option.
Some sort of "please, devs, say what you use, I want the same"
of course, I see this as a marketting object, that could be discussed
with the devs, not a technical goal... we could use this computer to
promote openSUSE

Hello my friends,
Sorry to disturb you with reports of our events :-)
This is our last for 2010.
The last 3 days (28-30 of December) we were at the event organized by
the web page xariseto.gr. This bazaar is for people who has some items
that they don't need them and can be used by someone else. They bring it
and leave them there and if they find something that they like, they can
take it, without asking or pay.
Our team was there to inform people about open source and openSUSE. We
talked to many people. One of them was the local news reporter that we
gave a PromoDVD and brochure.
For full report and pictures you can visit our report page:
http://opensuseambassadors.blogspot.com/2010/12/xarisetogr-bazaar-december-…
Well, that's all for now.
We wish you Happy New Year.
Warm wishes to all of you and to your families.

Hi all,
Bryen and myself have had a look at the approximate travel costs for the three
options we have for the Marketing Meeting. The costs for each option are about
equal - almost $15.000 for air travel alone. Yes, that is excluding local
travel (trains in Europe for example) and hotel. We're darn international it
seems :D
Luckily it is not counting the fact that part of the team who wants to join
will be at SCALE and FOSDEM, saving some costs (SCALE much more than FOSDEM).
Still the costs are more than my budget affords me to pay.
So I am going to be the dick here that makes the hard decisions as it is my
budget. I went over the list and based on my own experience with all of you,
with how much I think you'd learn from this (some of you already have much
experinece) and how new you are (I prefer to bring at least some new ppl to a
meeting like this) I have decided who I will sponsor and how much. Before I
make the final decisions I'd like a travel cost estimate from all of you.
Then I will tell you how much I will sponsor. Tell me also if you have the $$
to book in advance or not.
I will usually reimburse 50% or 80% of your travel costs. For some, that
simply is not enough - like if you're a student. Let me know that too.
Now FYI:
- I sponsor hotel for anyone who comes. So if I had to decide not to pay (all)
your travel but you come anyway, you get the hotel for sure. Please understand
I would love to pay all the travel so you could all be there but I just don't
have the money!
- The cheapest option is doing this in the USA. That is also good for the USA
promo work - we all know how hard it is to promote openSUSE there (while in
and around Nuremberg and FOSDEM we have plenty of promo). So we do our first
Marketing Meeting in the City of Angels (LA).
- I want to make the whole thing a few days longer so we get more value for
the huge travel costs. 4 days it'll be.
So this is what it will be:
We have a marketing meeting in the 4 days before SCALE in Los Angelos,
California, USA. Dates:
Mon 21 start hackfest (pls arrive sunday evening!)
SCALE: fri 25-sun 27 (it's OK if you have to leave a bit early, like sat night
if you're from India and have a job on Monday)
Hotel for all attendees will be fully paid from the Novell/openSUSE community
budget.
Please, all those who want to and can be there for those 4 days MM + 3 days
SCALE (I expect you to stay for SCALE, yes), send an email with:
- Name (like in passport), address, phone (international!)
- most up to date travel costs in USD
- how much reimbursement you would need to be able to come (50/80/100%)
- if you can afford to pay and get reimbursement later
- a short description/explanation of why you should be there - what do you
intend to contribute and what are your contributions to date.
Note that the travel costs must be realistic: I will decide to pay up to $$,
not "your ticket price, no matter how expensive it suddenly turns out to be".
I will make decisions (in dialog with my boss) on the travel support on
individual basis. Those decisions are NOT up for discussion, sorry. It is how
it is.
Deadline for your travel cost estimates is Januari 4. I will contact each of
you with my decision individually.
I have updated the wiki page on
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:11.4_Marketing_Hackfest according to this.
Greetings,
Jos
Merry Christmas to all community.
We wish you all the best to you and your families.
A small team of the Greek openSUSE community decided to go on a
Christmas roadtrip. So we drove about 200km to join the teachers of The
Educational Computer Association of Florina at their event at the center
square of the city. The event had to do with promoting FOSS at school
and in general.
Local elementary teacher Mr Ioannis Kaskamanidis, asked his students to
join the booth and be the example of the results of FOSS in education.
Ioannis, took the advantage that the educational system provides, and
every student of his class has one XO.
We also met a local doctor, Dr Evangelos Tsoukas, who translated and
supports an open source software called openEMR for his job. We discuss
with him the openSUSE Medical distro.
Above all, we were happy that we could inform the locals for the
advantage of FOSS and openSUSE.
Althought it was a tiring trip for us
We did our job and we had fun!!!
