This was discussed in the ambassador list and I am continuing this over here The thread is here http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-ambassadors/2010-12/msg00069.html I agree with both Aj and P Sankar that this proposal requires a lot of human effort, dedication and other logistics. Its indeed a very difficult job. Some of us might be familiar and some of us might not be with Helping Hands Project in which we used to have irc sessions to teach people about openSUSE. Here experts at their respective domain would help people with their first landing steps. I will give you an example Suppose, I use GNOME and want people to know about GNOME I can take an irc session on using Gnome comfortably. If I am good at OBS, IRC sessions on OBS to help people out. This project was good and was successful but failed because we did not have a lot of human resources. Certifications and creating training materials would even make a notch more difficult. I would suggest, lets re initiate Helping Hands. No Certificates, nothing but rather teach them and we achieve our objective let people know about openSUSE. [opensuse-marketing] Awesome first day

Yesterday, the Marketing Team held the first in a series of Collaboration Days planned for December, with a focus on gathering up all our existing and new materials to help Ambassadors do their job. This first day proved just how important openSUSE is to so many of us and why we take the time to work together to promote openSUSE. We have a long list of ToDo's and many things were accomplished. What didn't get done will continue to be worked on and I'll leave it to yesterday's moderators, Kostas and Carlos to list what's left to be done and discuss where we are at now. Three important thiings happened yesterday: 1. We got work done 2. Our existing teams of Marketing and Ambassadors showed up and worked 3. Many new faces came to Collaboration Day and pitched in. It was a day that proved that when we need to get some work done, we can all focus in on it. Thank you all and don't forget, our next Collaboration Day is this Monday, 13-December. We'll be working on polishing up our marketing materials. Great job Kostas and Carlos! We're on our way to the second of three openSUSE Marketing Collaboration days with the next one coming up on Monday, 13-December at 9:00 UTC and ending at 24:00 UTC. This will be in our usual #opensuse-marketing IRC channel. The focus of Monday's Collaboration Day will be reviewing Marketing material. [opensuse-marketing] Trying to get help for accessibility

Hello everybody. First of all, sorry in advance for the long mail... As part of the promotion activities I do for openSUSE, there is one event that I do not miss since a few years now: the Rome based Linux Day. As it often happens after the event, I get requests about support on doing stuff related to openSUSE. This year I've been contacted also for a special support for which I'm trying to get all the required info but for which I forward the request in this list because it is a little bit out of my competences for two main items: - Multimedia; - Accessibility; The situation is: I've been invited to the National Institute for Deaf People in Rome (http://www.istitutosordiroma.it/index-en.asp) by a couple of openSUSE enthusiastic deaf guys that work there into the Visual Multimedia Department (http://www.istitutosordiroma.it/mediateca-en.asp). They are working on a project related to the accessibility for deaf people to be able to go alone to arts and cultural sites (museums, churches, etc.) without depending on people that know the 'sign language'. To do this, they are trying to get technologies helping them... They have tried a few netbooks with openSUSE installed and have played with some multimedia software coming from available solutions where they are trying to put recorded videos in 'sign language' that they can launch when in front of something they want more details about. At the moment, the best solution they have found is XBMC (xbmc.org), but it is not yet enough adeguate for them. So, the questions I forward to this list is: - Is there any other combined solution made of touch_screen_hardware-openSUSE-multimedia_add_on_software that anybody knows as to be perfect for this? The requirement is to be able to have a touch-screen hardware with an easy interface for EVERYBODY where users can quickly find the recording for what they are looking for (example: I'm at the San Peter Church, in the first room in the basements, and there is statue of a man sleeping. To reach the recording, there should be icons like Country, City, Type_of_site_as_church_or_museum, Name_of_site, Floor, Type_of_item, etc. etc. They are working themselves to generate the videos, but they should be easy to find by tags or something similar). - If there are no available solutions, they have asked me at least a hand on finding somebody that could be able to make some changes to xbmc code (changes related to menu layout, icons, etc.). Anybody? - Are there any touch-tablets/netbooks/nettops that you know is working with openSUSE? Is meego a better solution? - Is there anybody available in helping me to help them in finding the right combination? What I can do from my side, as part of my personal time that I spend for promoting openSUSE, I've already shared with them that: - I can be their counterpart with the community and/or developers that will provide availability; - I can help them in developing openSUSE courses for internal pc users; - I can chair basic courses to them with the help of persons knowing 'sign languages'; - I can help them finding the best combination of 'tablet-like-pc' with touch functionallities by trying them and trying to fix problems that will arise; I do not have competences in multimedia solutions, neither on accessibility. Any help is appreciated. Thank you very much. [opensuse-marketing] Promoting SUSE Studio by making a contest for it (some thoughts)

Hi We were trying to thing ways in order to promote SUSE Studio which we think is something great,we were thinking SS and OBS mostly because we want people that use another distribution to know those two great tools and become more familiar with the openSUSE project. So what is the story,as the Greek openSUSE team we are installing openSUSE distribution and some other distributions to some old computers that a branch of scouts have but we are talking with some other higher grade (national) scouts so that we install FOSS to other branches around Greece.We had the problem that the PC's are really old and we need a lighter distribution,so Stathis said "Ok I'll try to make one on SUSE Studio" and I thought why should we do it and don't let other people be creative,let other people know this great tool and give anyone who wants the pleasure of making an operating system by himself? So we thought why don't we ask for permission for the scout logos and stuff and make a contest about who will create a Custom Scout Distribution? We are thinking in giving everyone a starter pack with logos and stuff that Scout want included in the distribution to download from a page,give a dead end(with plenty of time,not because people might need time to create a distribution but give us the time to promote it BIG),after that give some people to test all the distributions and finally the Greek openSUSE team and the Scouts(or maybe only the scouts) to choose the winner.I would like to ask if openSUSE can send us something to put as a prize,something symbolic, I really don't know. Finally we have an 'official' Greek Scout openSUSE distribution and after that if all this go well we could try on organizing a global contest about it,only think what might follow after that..Other organizations and a great marketing opening opening doors for openSUSE project around the world. You might think we are crazy or dreamers or what ever, we don't bother because we are...
