[opensuse-marketing] Guerrilla! It has started!

Dear people, Despite I'm a lunatic, I do have cool ideas once in a while. I've spoken with a small number of Portuguese speaking enthusiasts from our community and behind 'closed doors' we organized and pushed in a small guerrilla campaign which isn't in any way associated to openSUSE official sub-projects to diffuse the message: openSUSE is a cool and fun alternative to proprietary software. Why the secrecy around this... because given the latest issues regarding RTFM and polemical blog posts, I believe that this initiative should be under wraps, specially given the sensitivity of some people. The very same initiative is being conducted only in Portuguese speaking countries (Brazil and Portugal) as a test pilot for this more 'obscure' technics. Though we have established a small mechanism and some 'key' members of our community are willing to help giving 1st line support to new users (since we are only testing this on Portuguese speaking populations, we need Portuguese speakers only), we can get some feedback from this. This test pilot will be conducted until the release of 11.4, by that time we will either continue with the current strategy if proven to work, or we will even become more agressive with it. For it we need metrics to measure our efforts. As our communication (also developed under wraps and sensasionalist, and in no way related to openSUSE project or openSUSE marketing) is directing users to #opensuse-pt we will have a sort of quantitative information available. This might not be enough, so I could use metrics from the official infra-struture like number of hits from Brazilian and Portuguese IP's to measure if we're actually having some impact and how it's working out. Where can we find these metrics? Don't bother asking what we're doing, because for now, it won't be said. Hi all, A while ago there was a blog by Nelson on LibreOffice. I had a quick look and thought 'Ok so you don't get the dynamics of Free Software huh'* but didn't think about it otherwise. Then the blog was selected as one of the articles in the Weekly News, put together by the hard work of Sascha and his team. Which tickled of some rough feathers at the LibreOffice camp - as you can imagine after reading the blog. There was a link to an article putting down the LibreOffice efforts (part of openSUSE!) - in an 'official' openSUSE news article! So, I don't really want to discuss the blogpost itself - it's the personal vision of Nelson and I get the point he was trying to get across). Even if his critisism was completely founded and sensible, the question I have is: should it have been in the Weekly news? That is actually something Nelson can surely comment upon: does it make sense, from a marketing perspective, to put your 'dirty laundry' (internal discussions and critisism) out to the world if you don't have too? Frankly, I have had this discussion in KDE as well - some argued that even on Planet KDE, critisism did not belong. Planet, as they saw it, was a communicationchannel OUTWARDS. If you had critique, say it on a mailinglist or in private, use planet for positive comments. I disagreed with that - imho planet is for community discussion and personal views, hence should be open for critisism. But for something like the weekly news, I think it might make sense for the team doing it to think about what their purpose is - yes, informing the community. But those part of it or very close most likely do follow the planet. The weekly news is most likely read by users further away from the project and journalists and such - who don't have to be bothered by infighting or bad news ;-) Yes, I am saying the Weekly News is a great marketing asset - and hence should be treated as such. Comments? As usual, feel free to disagree and fall all over me now - but please end it with a hug :D Jos * so the blog was about the marketing side of the fork. Sure. Still, it was a bit clueless - indeed, from a marketing point it's not smart to create two projects - from the Free Software dynamics pov it's the best thing that has happened to OpenOffice in years and it should've happened years ago... Marketing is clearly secondairy here. And yes, I imagine it would be fun to see the marketing battle. From a FOSS perspective - I just hope it won't take LibreOffice long to win. [opensuse-marketing] writing opportunities

Hi all, I need some creativity from you all. I've been asked by the UK linuxuser magazine people if I know anyone who could write technical tutorials (eg installing a L.i.f.e thin-client setup) of about 2000 words for them. There might be some payment but that's not a given - they have to eat too. So, we must have people in our community who, maybe with some writing help from us, could do this. How do we contact them? Does anyone have any ideas? I could obviously blog, or ask on -project, but I would like to hear your thoughs too. And if any of you would be willing to work with a techie on such an article, doing some editing and working on wording etc, step up now :D Cheers, Jos

This is a recognizable face at different places. * Corporate identity includes YaST, boot screen, splash screens, wall paper, web presence, banners, posters, flyers... Especially the distribution should have a consistent artwork. * Right now, we have three distinct color palettes: The Novell palette, Jimmac's old palette at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_miscellaneous http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_guidelines and the Bento color scheme. * Palettes break with using gradients * Nuno: It's important to have a person that understands guidelines and explain them (an editor). This person should sign up on artwork. * Nuno: corporate identity creation takes time. Example: oxygen took more than 2 years to reach a common understanding between the three oxygen designers (everything of it has now been replaced). * First thing: Marketing team to define target users and needs, then many talks between art and marketing team. Note that context is important, one color on white is different from the same color on black. * Suggested next steps: 1. Clear strategy to define messaging. 2. Designer will propose something, 3. Marketing folks will review and iterate process until something appears. * Apple has great guidelines. First to break the guidelines is Apple itself.
