kde5/6: recent files/recent applications

Hi *, the problem already existed in kde5, but continued in kde6: The menues for "recent files" and "recent applications" stay empty in the start menu, in dolphin and other apps. In .local/share/RecentDocuments/ all the desktop icons for recent files are still existing. The list is updated whenever I open a new document, but nevertheless the "recent files" menu remains empty. As for "recent applications" I can't even find a folder, where they would be stored. I found a few, mostly very old postings on the net, but no fitting answer. Anyone any idea? TIA. Bye. Michael.

Mozilla's GUI (non)conformity

I use Plasma & XFCE depending on the booted distro and most non-KDE apps konform at least to some extent with the KDE desktop when KDE is used examples being Pan, Sylpheed, gftp and even nedit. The ONE set that is almost always problematic is anything Mozilla, Firefox in this particular case. I cannot change the title bar from black which just makes it impossible to distinguish from darker wallpapers, there being no way to select something with a contrasting window border either. How can I fix this?

Hi, I separate different tasks by using independent profiles in firefox. For example with my normal profile I never login to Google, and I use a special FF profile to login to Google. That way, when I search something google can not associate with my mail. Well, something is very wrong today. Using my normal profile, not logged in to google: https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/43477dee9ff5 This is a youtube opened days ago. You can see the "sign in" prompt at the top right. This is the normal state of things. But today, opening the same site in youtube (or any site), I get this: https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/d164bf9defd5 Notice the icon at the top right, that's my avatar. Also, there is the notification icon, and the menu at the top left opens with my subscriptions listed (there should be no subscriptions if I am not logged in). However, the avatar or the bell icons do not respond to click. "Subscriptions" menu does respond. In fact, this moment I don't have any FF window open with the google profile. There is one open on another computer. Seems that google is collating all firefoxes open on the same IP, the house router IP. Or firefox fails to separate profiles on disk since the last update. RFC 6724

I was reading about proposed changes to RFC 6724 which determines the priority for IP address selection. In the original RFC 6724, IPv4 addresses are given preference to IPv6 Unique Local Addresses (ULA). The proposed changes would reverse that. However, in testing with ping, I see ULA is preferred, except for the computer being used for testing from. That is when a computer is pinging itself. Why the difference? Why is the proposed priority used when pinging a different device, but not the same device? Also, if I use the FQDN, instead of just the host name, then ULA is used. WTF??? I'm using the DNS resolver in pfSense. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Unable to start KDE Plasma X11 desktop

I have a misbehaving laptop that no longer can bring up the KDE Plasma X11 desktop. On booting up, it reaches the KDE login prompt but after entering my credentials, it flashes a set of commands (too fast to read) and then goes back to the KDE login prompt. The credentials are correct and this happens no matter whether it is another user or root logging in. In searching through log files (messages, boot.log, warn etc.) the only clue that I found in in the Xorg.0.log file where I observed this very suspicious bit of nonsense. I would be happy to present the entire log but it is rather long, if that would be more helpful. Debugging Thunderbird Connections?

Hi Folks, I'm having issues with Thunderbird on Leap 15.5 when connecting to a smtp server. TB returns a rather unhelpful error message. Is there any way to turn on a debug mode in TB? I unfortunately don't have access to the logs on the server side. There's always tcpump and wireshark, but there must be an easier way. Regards, Lew

bad chromium update

Folks, what is going on with the recent Chromium update for Leap 15.5? It was a big jump: 122.0.6261.128-bp155.2.75.1 -> 124.0.6367.201-bp155.2.78.1 (from the 'Update repository of openSUSE Backports') and the new version is at the border of being completely unusable! Many tabs ether crash very quickly, or don't react, even for such innocuous pages like the German Wikipedia. Is it only me who experiences this? For me it was necessary to revert to the previous version. I wouldn't have expected that users of Leap 15.5 are treated as guinea pigs – this should be the priviledge of the Tumbleweed people :-) Werner

Purging unneeded packages and dependencies:

Hi, I am wondering about how I should best go about purging packages and possibly dependencies along with what is displayed after passing 'zypper pa --unneeded'. I can use 'zypper remove --clean-deps' to remove the package along with it's uneeded dependencies or set 'solver.cleandepsOnRemove = true' in '/etc/zypp/zypp.conf'. Is it safe to set solver to clean up the dependencies on package removal in '/etc/zypp/zypp.conf' ? Can you tell me why it may be a bad idea to do this? I recently used 'zypper rm packagenames' to remove packages that 'zypper pa --unneeded' displayed on a machine without removing any dependent packages. I am working with another machine now and when I passed 'zypper pa --unneeded' the list is once again quite extensive > https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/2824e60628ce What do you recommend with this situation. Are there negative impacts waiting for the machines user/s or operating system (Tumbleweed) if all the packages shown in the susepaste are purged? Thanks

"Verifying shim SBAT data failed" after 15.5 update

I have an old HP Envy (not sure how old but it has a Windows 8 sticker on the bottom) with 15.5 beta (because I've been lazy about doing a "zypper dup") on which I just did an update, the first since 26-Apr, so I got a new kernel. When I attempted to reboot, I got "Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation" and the system shut down immediately. I learned that the solution is turning off secure boot, but now I can't even get into the BIOS; is the only message I see after booting, even if I press DEL at the same time as the power button, with or without CTL and ALT. Does anybody have any other suggestions? I'd even consider wiping the disk and doing a fresh installation . . . if I could get it to boot into anything else. -- Bob Rogers http://www.rgrjr.com/

Change minicom terminal type

For some reason, minicom likes to default to VT102 (I haven't worked with any DEC gear in 35 years). Is there anyway to change to ANSI? According to what I found on the 'net, adding "pu rtscts Yes" to the minirc.dfl file is supposed to make it default to ANSI, but that doesn't seem to work. Even real DEC terminals could be configured to run ANSI. Suggestions? tnx jk

Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

Preferred way to install Skype on Tumbleweed?

Hi, I am wondering if there is a preferred way to install Skype on openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma V6. I can see that there is a Skype Flatpak available in Discover but it errors right towards the end of installation indication. After asking for root password 3 times during the installation process. The error message is -> Aborted due to failure (Flatpak system operation Deploy not allowed for user. Is there a procedure required before Flatpaks can be used with openSUSE Tumbleweed? Is this a KDE related bug? How to Disable KDE User Halt and Reboot Buttons?

Hi Folks, I've searched a bit but haven't found a satisfying answer to my issue. The problem occurs when a non-root user connects to a server using xrdp. This user then has full authorization to halt/reboot the server using the KDE halt or reboot buttons, not exactly an ideal situation. So how can I disable remote xrdp-connected users from rebooting or halting the server? This would also stop users from rebooting/halting the server when directly sitting at the console, which may not exist anyway. Regards, Lew

Missing window frames on XFCE after update

Hi, I had to shutdown my machine due to impending power outage. Clever me I figured I'd update before shutdown to pick up whatever was new. Well, whatever is new since my last update on openSUSE Leap 15.5 messed up my XFCE settings. When I start a new application there are no window frames and everything starts in the upper left hand corner. Alt-Tab is not working to switch between apps Since there are no window frames I cannot move windows around. And there is only 1 workspace, albeit the workspace settings dialog shows that there should be 4, which is what I had setup prior to system shutdown. Any ideas? Local Repository Copies?

Hi Folks, Is there a way to maintain local copies of the openSUSE repositories? Maintenance includes keeping the local repos up-to-date by downloading only the deltas between the remote and local repos. I know how to do this using the Red Hat "reposync" program, a part of the yum/dnf package, but it just doesn't feel right having to depend on Red Hat for what would appear to be core functionality. Note: I can't use rsync due to policy constraints. But web ports 80 and 443 are okay. I know, go figure... Any thoughts? Regards, Lew

TW users, Just a note, gcc 14 will break the nvidia driver module build. The discussion and initial workaround/patch is discussed in https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/nvidia-modules-build-failure-with-upc… I've not got a patch for the 470 or 390 drivers worked out yet -- if you do, post a link, but I think we can port the fixes in the above discussion to those versions as well. The CFLAGS default change also impacts the build. If I work out a patch or get one from the Arch list, I'll drop a link here. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Early distro update to Leap 15.6

The 15.6 release candidate is now fixed, so I am thinking of doing a system upgrade now to resolve two issues with 15.5, one long-standing, the other occurring within the last week. Are there any issues which might make that a bad idea? If not, will another full update be needed when the final version is released on June 12?

Today I have 5 spam messages, sent yesterday, addressed to users(a)lists.opensuse.org :( They are all sent by User-Agent: HyperKitty on https://lists.opensuse.org/ I've noticed previously that pretty much all the spam I receive from this list are sent in the same way. So if it's too much to ask that the filters for this source be made stricter, can I suggest that we simply ban people from submitting mail to the list in this way? Such traffic makes up less than 1% of the messages to the list, so we won't be losing much.

VirtualBox and Leap 15.5

I finally got around to installing 15.5 on my main machine here (up from 15.0) and with all such changes there are bumps along the way. The latest was trying to get VirtualBox to recognize USB items. I went through all the known and suggested fixes, the obvious ones like permissions and group memberships, etc but absolutely nothing was making a difference, to the point I started thinking "bug". So, I tossed a hail mary <-- American football term - and downloaded the .rpm from Oracle and told it to install and overwrite all. It did and the USB problem disappeared. Bug squished. The VB version on the OS repositories sucks. I have arrived at 15.5 late in the game; everyone else was probably aware of this item but thought I would put it out to the group anyway, just in case someone may have missed it.
