3 pairs of xeyes?

I have a line in ~/.profile that calls a script which in turn includes: if [ "$desktop" = "kde" ] then echo "it is kde" xeyes -geometry 70x50+36+420 & xeyes -geometry 70x50+1750+420 & else echo "No kde, no xeyes" fi Which 'used to' give me 2 pairs of xeyes nestled between the two deskbar panels on the sides. Lately however I've ben getting 3 of them: https://imgur.com/2M5Zbil.png In this image (made to brag about my not usb but SATA desktop external bay) you can see my monitor showing the KDE plasma desktop photographed as part of my IKEA pine desktop then reloaded as a desktop wallpaper before that desktop being snapped up to imgur. I 'suspect' SDDM which begins with a lo-res desktop (the two pairs of xeyes on the left) but then they get redrawn as the desktop rolls into high-res with the left one being repeated in the same place as the first time. I have NO CLUE really, just poking around. What gives?

Sound setup failure in OpenSuSE 15.6

I have a computer devoted to handling my media center and recently upgraded it from OpenSuSE 15.5.to 15..6 (KDE X-11 Plasma desktop) and now I am having troubles setting up the sound system. Whenever I right click on the small speaker icon in the kicker bar, to configure the audio devices, and select any one of the playback devices and try to test the speakers, I get the following error - Error trying to play a test sound. The system said: "System error" NOT very helpful IMHO! I have followed, and done what I could do, the suggestions outlined at - https://en.opensuse.org/Sound_troubleshooting but many of the steps ran into the above mentioned "System error". I have no idea how to go about debugging the openSuSE sound subsystem, there doesn't seem to be any log files associated with the sound system to study, nor does the general messages log file show anything about sound system failures. Devs, Since I can remember, suse/opensuse has provided the convenience of collecting the bash builtin functions in a separate man page: $ man bashbuiltins On Tumbleweed, that results in: $ man bashbuiltins No manual entry for bashbuiltins Possibly, man page is not installed, try online at: https://manpages.opensuse.org/bashbuiltins It was there up though Leap 15.4. Found left-over process plymouth on boot

Nov 30 14:29:52 client systemd[1]: plymouth-start.service: This usually indicates unclean termination of a previous run, or service implementation deficiencies. Is that an expected behavior? Mail Server - Huge increase in attempts to compromise dovecot auth as user[1-7]? Or am I just lucky?

All, During the past 3 days, I've received over 1,278 attempts my bots, script-kiddies or other miscreants to compromise dovecot with ruser="user1@..." or ruser="user2@...", and so on for user1 to user7. These are distributed brute-force attempts coming for all different IPs. (not all differed, there are are last 121 that tried 3 times are fail2ban jailed). That's what creeps me out. I don't have any users like that, so they aren't getting in, but it got me thinking -- is there some bug I don't know about in dovecot or auth or something else that recognizes the names user1 to user7 even though there is no Unix account? Tumbleweed: video plays on "gpac" but not on vlc - trying to understand why

I have here a video from youtube via yt-dlp that plays normally on gpac (normally but somewhat limit apparently for either graphics card or processor) but music runs well, and I do not know if gpac generally has good video quality or not, and that does play only music on vlc but with a black screen. Normally if a video is so big it cannot play it should be interlaced in vlc, isn't this the case? How can I understand what is the reason for it to play on one player and not on the other (but only music). Is there a log that could complain about something in vlc? Shouldn't vlc downsize the video on a smaller resolution? were can I set this as automatic default. Thank you.

Did solver.dupAllowVendorChange change? Dupe last night listed "Problems" for newer packages in alternate repositories?

All, Devs, zypper dupe last night was really odd from a "problems" and chose a solution standpoint. It seemed like zypper dup was ignoring my setting in zypp.conf of solver.dupAllowVendorChange = false It was suggesting overwriting OSS packages with packages from the science and mingw repositories. There were multiple packages where I had to tell the chooser to keep the OSS package and not pull the package from some other repo. I thought that setting prevented that. It also wanted suggested switching Nvidia drivers from my current repo to the openSUSE repo with lower version (newer package but lower release count). I was fine with the change, but was surprised that it too seemed to ignore the dupAllowVendorChange setting. Did something change how that setting works? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Why do we have system-user-wwwrun? It conflict with nginx user:group and is NOT a real dependency of php.

All, Devs, Why do we have the package system-user-wwwrun? Yes it creates the user/group for the webserver to run as, but it totally conflicts with the nginx webserver default nginx:nginx, and there is no requirement that a webserver run as www:wwwrun -- none at all. The downside to this type "nanny" package is it creates confusion on updates suggesting that php must be completely uninstalled if the package system-user-wwwrun or requiring the user to choose "break" php by ignoring some of its dependencies. Running php-fpm under user/group www:wwwrun is NOT a valid php dependency - period. After installing nginx, I configured the web server to run as nginx:nginx based on the default installed nginx user/group. It already creates the nginx user/group, so there is no reason for the system-user-wwwrun dependency on php trying to change that. Now every time I try and update Tumbleweed it tries to uninstall php and I'm forced to choose the false option to "break" php every update. These nanny packages should be optional and NOT a dependency. They can be "Recommended", but dependencies are supposed to be real dependencies not some made up user-preference masquerading as a dependency. Php-fpm does not care what user it runs as. That is a simple 2 line config issue: user = nginx group = nginx So why do we have system-user-wwwrun as a hard php dependency, and why is the user not capable of following the wealth of examples and tutorials out there to set up the server? It just seems this is a totally unnecessary package that causes more problems than it purportedly solves. It creates a circular-dependency hell that shouldn't exist in the first place and screws up updates. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
