[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. [opensuse] How to make sure that each vNIC in guest is always associated with a correct VLAN?

Hi, I have six virtual bridges in xen host machine and following virtual machine configuration file section defining the vifs: vif = [ 'bridge=br10', 'bridge=br20', 'bridge=br30', 'bridge=br40', 'bridge=br50', 'bridge=br60' ] This means that in the guest(openSUSE Leap 42.1) I have six vNICs(eth0 - eth5). Can I be sure that eth0 is always connected to br10, eth1 to br20, etc? Or should I specify a MAC address for each vNIC created like this: vif = [ 'bridge=br10, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F1', 'bridge=br20, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F2', 'bridge=br30, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F3', 'bridge=br40, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F4', 'bridge=br50, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F5', 'bridge=br60, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F6' ] .. and then configure udev rules which make sure that interface associated with MAC 00:14:5E:11:C6:F1 and br10 is always named eth0, interface associated with MAC 00:14:5E:11:C6:F2 and br20 is always named eth1, etc? Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. DDNS providers

I am looking at setting up a system that will need a domain name and DDNS. I'm curious what the current state of these things are in openSUSE. I guess the main thing is support for an application that informs the DDNS service of the current IP address for the machine. Any preferences? Providers to avoid? -- Roger Oberholtzer

FF 102 - Font Rendering Improved

All, With FF 102, aside from Carlos's ulimit issue, font rendering seems much improved. However, the bookmark and menu entry height is still 2X too tall due to GTK bunglekit. Similar with TB 102, all seems good -- but I would still like to have a permanent Cc: in the new message window instead of the ellipsized list top-right. I guess they had to do that due to the 2X edit box height for To: and Subject: due to bunglekit+3 to save window real estate. Progress ? :( ? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

But some setting is wrong that makes the printer pop its yellow light with a prompt for feeding A4 or press OK for use what is available (and the printer is loaded with A4). And the Mozilla dialog says the size is A4. This means that for every print I have to get up from my chair and go to the printer to press that key. An option at the end of the dialog says "print using the system dialog". If I use this, there is no error and the printer fires immediately. Leap 15.4 - GDM won't start

I upgraded from Leap 15.3 to Leap 15.4 yesterday (actually, from Linux Kamarada 15.3, which is Leap-based, to Leap 15.4) following the same upgrade procedure I'm used to years now: https://linuxkamarada.com/en/2021/12/23/linux-kamarada-and-opensuse-leap-ho… (of course, I replaced 15.3 by 15.4, for it to work) https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade Now I'm not able to log in to the graphical interface as usual. Plymouth stops spinning, GDM should appear next, but it doesn't. The only thing I'm able to do is switch to the first terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1) and reboot using Ctrl + Alt + Del. I'm not even able to log in to the terminal, if I don't change the kernel. Back to GRUB, if I enter the advanced options and select the recovery mode of the 5.14.21-150400.22-default kernel (the one from the Main repo, not the Update repo), at least I'm able to switch to the first terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1), log in to the terminal and do: $ startx Then I have a fully functional GNOME desktop. MicroOS Webserver + Mail Server

I'm currently running a Nextcloud instance on a VPS using OpenSUSE Leap 15.3. I will need to update the operating system before the end of November. I was planning to create a new instance of Leap 15.4 at my provider to get a fresh start, and then transfer data and then DNS. I'm intrigued with MicroOS's read- only file system and atomic updates. I'm wondering what the best strategy is for running the services on MicroOS. On my server I'm running the following services: nginx php-fpm postgresql redis rspamd postfix dovecot I'm thinking that I would run postfix and postgresql directly on the MicoOS system and the remainder as docker or podman containers. Does anyone have any experience/thoughts on this? Thanks Mark

15.4 - Backup Your Thunderbird Mail Store before Update to 102 -- you cannot go back if you don't.

All, Just saw on announce that Tbird will update to 102. I did testing a couple of months ago with it for a heavy CPU use issue in the 91 version -- it is fixed in 102. However, the install of 102 will modify your ~/.thunderbird profile in place and it is a one-way modification without any way to undo it if you need to go back for any reason. Make a quick tar.xz backup of your existing ~/.thunderbird directory before you do the upgrade just to be on the safe side. I liked 102, so I don't expect issues, but when anything modifies a profile in place -- it's always good to have a backup. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Mouse freezes randomly but often

Hello, since today I have a big problem with my mouse. It freezes randomly. As much as I can see, only the mouse freezes (I can use the keyboard, the gkrellm window shows activities, the radio keeps running). It starts with stagnant movement of the mouse, then it freezes completely for several seconds and then the cursor jumps to where I move it last. Then it works normal for a while, but soon starts again. I have the problem since today (yesterday I run the updates). I had the same problem like a month ago, but then it went away "magically" after I changed the mouse-receiver to another usb-plug, but this time it doesn't help... Of course I changed the battery of the mouse, I also changed to another mouse (of the same model), plugged the wireless receiver to several different usb-plugs at the computer... reboot only helps for a short while. python executable name

I see that on a newly installed Tumbleweed, only Python 3.10 is installed. No problem with that. However, there is no executable called 'python'. Only 'python3' and 'python3.10'. Is this a general thing? That perhaps 'python' always references Python 2? Would something break if I made a 'python' link to 'python3'? Obviously, the code called would need to expect it. And I can make sure that's the case for our code. But generally in Tumbleweed/Leap would this confuse something? -- Roger Oberholtzer

firewalld and root password

I am running OpenSuSE 15.3 x64 and am struggling with setting up Firewalld. At the moment I have lots of questions and will probably ask more questions in different threads in the near future. Right now I would like to ask why does Firewalld-config keep badgering me for the root password while I am trying to work with it, and how do I get it to stop. I have set it up in the Application Menu to run as the root user, and I expect it to ask me for the root password initially once, after starting up. But this constant badgering me to keep entering the root password, after different operations (for example changing the view from Temporary to Permanent, changing the zone I want to work with, adding a Rich rule, or a Direct Configuration rule, etc., ) is ridiculous and very annoying. Once is enough! But lately, it seems almost every time there are problems, which require I go into Yast > Software Updates, to find the problem package(s) and choose the fix needed to proceed. This is something that used to be rare, but is now commonplace. Here's one example: Update Error the to be installed gtk3-branding-openSUSE-15.0-lp154.2.2.1.noarch requires 'libgtk-3-0 = 3.24.31', but this requirement cannot be provided

Update woes

I have a Tumbleweed system that is a little out of date. (Different discussion.) For whatever reason (local IT complaints), I decided to update Jenkins (CI system). We use it, but not in a critical way. So if the update failed, no real problem. After updating it, it complained that the java we had was too old. okay, It's the only java app, so same for this, a successful update is not critical. Well, after updating these two things (java was a number of packages), all hell has broken loose. I see that I missed that glibc was updated when Java was updated. Rookie mistake. I know better. But it is what it is. And glibc is usually pretty much backward compatible in that it usually contains recent API versions a well a the new one. So, I thought I would do a snapper rollback. Which I did. However, it looks like all the changes are still there. rpm --last reports all the updated RPMs. I expected that to have been reverted. Did I miss something. I'm afraid to reboot as I don't know what all is effected. I'm afraid to do the long delayed distro update as I don't know what might fail in some RPM script. I could consider doing a fresh install. All the important stuff on this system is on a separate RAID volume. It's just some configurations on root that I would like to keep. However, I nave a critical application (trac) that is still not Python 3 for production use. So I don't want to loose any Python 2 stuff that I have already installed. Any words of encouragement? As my evolving Tumbleweed desktop shows (in the top right panel) Web-Navigators (aka browsers but I call'em navigators out of respect for the original Netscape folk) are demanding exploding focus and attention for reasons that no one needs to expand upon. Would be timely if Suse included Librewolf among others. Thanks in advance :-) https://i.imgur.com/QbS0Oz4.png For some reason most of the ones I use are crashing left, right and center. I just installed a fresh Falkon and in default configuration it bombed on Netflix with a Netflix error message that I would even try to understand. Not all the complaints are about unsolicited snooping. I'm asking this from authors and not distro packagers but eventually I would like 'buttons' like for the more pupular video sites, others for layered levels of 'dark' form 'useful' to html rendered but 'wget pitch black'.

Tumbleweed won't shutdown correctly

Hi, Recently I upgraded my workstation from Leap to Tumbleweed. I'm using the KDE desktop. Looks like I can't shutdown anymore. When choosing the Shutdown option from the menu, graphics quit OK but I'm at a login console. No shutdown message, nothing, and I have to do a hard reset. Any suggestions ? kernel-firmware updates to 15.4 changed default handling of keypad [enter] key?

All, This is strange. I just did updates on 15.4 and there were kernel-firmware updates that somehow changed the default mapping of the keypad [enter] key. I discovered this almost immediately. When working with microcontrollers, I always send serial output to an xterm with minicom. When I need to flash, I exit minicom with [ctrl + a] then [x] and tap the keypad [enter] key. Immediately after updates, when I go to exit minicom and tap the keypad [enter] key, the Leave Minicom? Yes No dialog simply disappears and I remain in minicom. The normal keyboard [enter] key works just fine. I don't notice anything different check with xev, the keypresses still look right, e.g. the keypad and normal keyboard enter keys look correct.
