Updating glibc and filesystem on Tumbleweed

I have a server running Tumbleweed. It is a bit behind in terms of updates for reasons that are not relevant to my question (a Python 2-based server I don't dare mess up). I want to update a library with a package from OBS. That package has been built with a newer version of glibc. So zypper wants to update glibc as well. And a couple others like filesystem. My Tumbleweed is before the lib move. I guess glibc usually contains support for older versions. I have 2.30, it wants to update to 2.35. An update such as this seems plausible. But the filesystem update seems odd in that I would have expected many more things to need to be updated when the move happened. I know that there are links in place that should help. Still... I have snapper enabled. So maybe I can try and see what happens. But I'm not sure about this one. Any thoughts? -- Roger Oberholtzer

fix scope problem with variable in bash script

Obviously I've reduced and rewitten it to better point out the problem in this script. The question is, how should the variable "count" be declared so that it isn't treated as two, completely different variables (with exactly the same name)? The future of OpenSUSE Leap (rant)

Hi, I'm the manager of a small IT firm with a focus on Linux and Open Source software. On my servers I'm running a mix of various RHEL clones like CentOS, Oracle Linux and Rocky Linux. On the desktop side, I've been using OpenSUSE Leap with KDE since version 15.0. Leap is powering all the desktop clients in our local school, and everybody (school staff, teachers, students) is very happy with it. I just finished polishing up my bone-headed post-install configuration script for Leap 15.4: https://gitlab.com/kikinovak/opensuse-lp154/-/blob/main/setup.sh And I just learned that SUSE will phase out Leap after the 15.5 release. So here's a few thoughts I want to share with the distribution maintainers. 1. Perennity anyone ? Duh ? 2. After the CentOS debacle in 2020, it looks like distribution maintainers love pissing off their userbase by pulling the rug from under their feet. Hint: we hate it. 3. Some official SUSE guy on Twitter who shall remain unnamed likes to explain on a regular basis that rolling releases are the future and folks who rely on releases are utterly clueless. As someone who tried to maintain a dozen production client desktops based on Arch Linux as far back as 2006 and failed miserably after a udev update broke everything, here's a thought from my professional experience. My Number One Fight Club rule: YOU DO NOT USE ROLLING RELEASES IN A PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT. Yes, I shouted that out loud. 4. Yes, I have Tumbleweed running on a spare sandbox PC. Yes, it works nicely. No, I will never (ever) use it in production. 5. Stop reinventing the wheel please. You young punks remind me of myself when I was three years old and tried to "repair" my parent's perfectly functional alarm clock. Bacula installation fails

Unable to load nvidia-gfxG05-kmp-default-470.129.06: Unknown symbol __x86_return_thunk

Hi, I just updated the NVIDIA drivers (without checking that I have backups of the old RPMs :-( ) and now, the driver won't load because of: nvidia: Unknown symbol __x86_return_thunk (err -2) 1. How do I fix this? x11vnc failed on OpenSuSE 15.4

Hi - I recently ported my x11vnc.service file from my OpenSuSE15.3 system to my new OpenSuSE15.4 system. It ran fine under 15.3 but now in the 15.4 system the x11vnc service fails to start. klogconsole gone

klogconsole - Tells the kernel to what terminal it should copy messages #'klogconsole -r 7' sends kernel messages to vt7. In leap-15 klogconsole was in the util-linux package. The command is now gone. How does one do this now? Regards Mark

mount from tumbleweed to a win 98 shared folder

Hi, in a local network from tumbleweed, i must have one or two times a year (or less) access to a windows 98 system running at a mechanical machine (no way to update). up to maybe last year (maybe the year before) this line was ok inside my automount file: plasma_c -fstype=cifs,username=yyyyyyyy,password=xxxxxx,uid=1000,gid=100,vers=1.0,sec=lanman,servern=yyyyyyy ://192.168.0.4/C i know sambafilesystem has disabled, oder meanwhile maybe drop unsecure lanman and maybe other things. so i got a error: kernel: Use of the less secure dialect vers=1.0 is not recommended unless required for access to very old servers kernel: CIFS: VFS: Use of the less secure dialect vers=1.0 is not recommended unless required for access to very old servers kernel: bad security option: lanman kernel: CIFS: VFS: bad security option: lanman is there a way to still access win98 from actual cifs/samba ???? man mount.cifs say: sec=arg Security mode.
