through our four KDE repos it's even nicer than bfore, htop says cpu usage < 5%, RAM 1,2GB with 5 open programs, on a machine 10+yrs old I always wonder why there are people who use a different DE (among those who do use a DE) and which be their reasons...I couldn't think of anything better, I only miss sometimes the mouse wheel scrolling speed setting, I'm looking forward for it to be re-implemented So, why don't you use KDE? And why do you use (not-KDE)?

Notes on the 15.2 Upgrade

I finally got around to the 15.1>15.2 upgrade the other day using the iso image on dvd, and here's a few notes. I'd like to hear what people think. I initially tried to update all repositories before the upgrade, but I must have messed up the pacman url, because it was not found and I had conflicts. I tried to use the back button to fix it, but couldn't find my back to the right spot, and decided to be conservative and start again with just the dvd. I ended up with conflicts anyway and resolved them one by one. The result was about 400 packages deleted. A lot of them were development packages and debuginfo and whatnot. I haven't looked further yet. After the upgrade I used Yast to switch to pacman, and it did pull some packages back in. I also used Yast for a serious online update. BTW, I noticed the main repository does not carry some chess packages such as xboard; they are only available from pacman. I then noticed about 600 packages still had an "x-lp151.x" sort of moniker-- zypper up took care of that. KDE's notification system isn't working due to a problem with xfce as described here: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/543232-Lost-notifications . I'm not entirely happy with the proposed solutions. I seem to recall KDE notification problems before, perhaps with 15.0, or maybe 42.0, where my system would fall back to xfce notifications until the KDE problems were fixed. That seemed like a nice behavior, all in all. ksysguard has gone from maybe 6-8% of one CPU to 30-40%. I've always tended to leave that running on one desktop, but 30-40% is unacceptable. It also apparently replaced my file read/write columns with Download/Upload. I have a CPU temp monitor in one of the panels that is not working. Any attempt to open its configuration dialog crashes plasmashell. Then there's akonadi. Akonadi_imap_resource, akonadiserver, and mysqld hog CPU continually on admittedly very large gmail folders until such time as akonadiserver "closes unexpectedly". I've also suddenly got 1131-300-200-100-300 emails in a drafts folder as reported variously by kontact and xfce. None of them are visible. Akonadi server somehow restarts itself. Hey, I can't watch Netflix while akonadi is running! At times past, I've bumped akonadi's priority down a notch. I haven't mentioned bluetooth which has been an ongoing problem for a long time. I've successfully nursed it in the past with restarts and whatnot, but I don't want to get into that at the moment. I used to use serial over bluetooth a lot, as well as tethering to my phone, but for the moment, it's a bit beyond me. So, comments? I can follow up on my downtime, keeping in mind that it will take time away from watching Netflix! ;-)

KDE: Removable devices default action

Hi list, I just upgraded my TW machines, which (obviously...) brought some new KDE, too. Seems this time they have changed the default presented option for the 'Removable devices' widget in the toolbar. That used to be 'Mount', Now it is 'Mount and Open', and I can't find a way to change that back to the old option. Am I blind, or is this another 'improvement' that may not be questioned?

Mounting CIFS network shares in Leap 15.2

Before i file a bug, i want to ask the crowd.. :) When attaching a CIFS network share with the KDE/dolphin tools (knetattach?) i can specify the server, the sharename but i am unable to specifiy a user. I will attach a german screenshot of the dialog box. Do you experience the same problem? My CIFS server is requiring authentication.

zypper --help

Hi, The `zypper --help` command misses some options that I'm usually looking for. Is it possible to add these to the `--help` command? For example I know when removing a package i need to give the command `zypper rm <package_name>`, but that command only removes that package and does not included the dependencies. So usually i first type `--help` to find the exact command, but am always disappointed that it's not there. For future reference the correct command is: `zypper rm -u <package_name>' And to see the orphaned packages is: `zypper pa --unneeded` /Syds

I forgot about it. Then the other day, I wanted to share a file using my server, and noticed that Apache was being hit, with "stupid" requests. Well, not stupid, they are probably probing vulnerabilities. What it surprises me is that they hit such a high port, they have to be probing every port. (The router is set to redirect incoming tcp on that high port to the inside server at the same high port) My IP address changed on the 7 and 8 of February, the hits increase on the 10th. It is possible that the previous user of that IP had a known domain. Should I worry? Should I try to implement something in the firewall that blocks IPs that attempt on vulnerabilities, somehow? If there is such a tool. Can I know if they are attempting to access the URL by domain name or by IP address? Ie, what do they write exactly on the "browser". Or script. Hi All I was trying to unsub from this list from another address of mine, which didn't work properly, so I tested the present provider, which in turn works fine I couldn't unsubscribe from the list's site (https://lists.opensuse.org) because I haven't got an account and getting a new one was not available. So I sent an unsub mail to users-leave(a)opensuse.org, it seems this is the correct procedure now, but I wasn't able to unsubscribe, I got a "delivery notification", which I sent to the list's owner. He said "I'll look into it", but after a couple of weeks I tried again to unsubscribe and it failed as before. I reported the issue to the owner, but this time I didn't even get a reply, so I had to filter the list as "spam" to not get it double downloaded. What's up with "users"? Is it gonna be eliminated perhaps? Cheers,

12-bit jpeg

We have had a request for 12-bit color jpeg images. Sigh. Anyway, isn't it the case that the jpeg library must be compiled for 12-bit instead of 8-bit support? I would imagine that one could not then replace the system jpeg library with this version. Has anyone tried 12-bit jpeg support in openSUSE? What was involved? -- Roger Oberholtzer

Folks, I've recently done an update from 15.1 to 15.2 using `zypper dup`. Since then I see an annoying message on the middle of my KDE desktop screen: Erstellung des Ein-/Ausgabemoduls nicht möglich. Socket für Ein-/Ausgabemodul für „desktop“ kann nicht gestartet werden. I guess an English translation is roughly Can't create in/out module. Socket for in/out module for 'desktop' can't be started. My next step was to switch to the newest KDE version following the instructions from https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories However, I still get this message. now three installs later new errors. First install Leap 15.2 worked for a year then suddenly ethernet stopped working. File systems ext4. Some creative workarounds fixed it temporarily then failed. wicked: support route type table

Hello, I'm trying for some years to change from network scripts into wicked, but it seems wicked lack the support for routing tables. From available documentation I don't see that feature available[1][2]. The support for the following seems not to be available in wicked: > 192.168.0/24 - - - - src 192.168.0.12 table mylocalnet where ifrule have the following > 4: from 192.168.0.12 lookup mylocalnet I require different routing tables for each network device. Is there any way to achieve the same behavior with wicked? Hi, I believe there is a problem with the latest tumbleweed version of hplip (hplip-3.20.11-1.4.x86_64 ) I am unable to install the plugin and am getting the error: Error importing HPLIP modules. Is HPLIP installed? I checked on google and this type of error has been seen before. Probably no one else has seen it on tumbleweed as most tumbleweed users probably don't keep reinstalling the OS. I'm not on factory so could someone look into this.....Thanks, mike

Freezing Skype after TW 20210212 & 20210215

Hi, since I yesterday upgraded 2 TW installs with KDE to latest TW snapshots, both 20210212 as well as 20210215, and since then Skype (latest version from its own repo) seems to be running in background well, i.e. it notifies me about new message and so on, but the window doesn't render at all, it contains basically background, so it's not usable at all. I wonder if this could be related to possible sandboxing issue mentioned by Dominique at Tuesday, but I have 64bit systems, and I have libqt5-qtwebengine 5.15.2-6.1 from tw-update. GIMP and plugins in oS or TW

Hi all, I try to use GIMP as a photo manipulator software on TW. Mainly to a bit repair old photos. I know there is a so-called resynthetizer python plugin set for GIMP. I dowloaded them, copied into the plugins directory of GIMP, made them executabel, and reloaded GIMP. And nothing. They should be present inthe Filters/Enhance list, but they are not there. Could anybody of you made them to work? I would especially need the heal selection plugin to remove patches, flecks, writing on old pictures. Unfortunately, it is also difficult to make toolboxes visible in oS. In Ubuntu and Mint GIMP comes up as expected - but the plugins mentioned above are not seen either. Leap 15.2 KDE file associations

On a recent Leap 15.2 install, I seem not to be able to get KDE to remember file associations. More specifically, which application to run for the file. If I select a file in Konqueror, and then select an application in the dialog Konqueror provides, and click the box that says to remember this, when I click again on that same file, it once again asks which application to use. It never remembers the association. It does run the application after I select it. But never again unless I select the application again. When I say that the association should be remembered, I get the status window saying that something is being updated. There is no error. In the X log, I see this when the association is selected and being remembered: kbuildsycoca4 running... So if there is an error, it is not presented anywhere I see. Has anyone else seen this? -- Roger Oberholtzer

scaling old applications

Hi, tumbleweed kde, amd-ryzen1700, amd graphic, 3 screens 3840x2160 (over all a fast machine) i run a old x-windows application on a virtual qemu-suse10.1 (its a proprietary software, and this is the last suse where its running on - and the last linux release of this software) (to be clear somewhere on 10.1 it stopped working, because of some updates (during live-cycle of 10.1), so i freeze the system at last working version)) this software is not scalable with the window manager. i could scale the software internally up to 2048x2048 pixels. but with my new screens 3840x2160 its to small to work with. i start this software normally over ssh two or three times in parallel. now my question: is there a possibility to scale a old software wit a fast reaction time? i could easily with virtmanager (over spice) work with the virtual machine and scale it. - but then i have only one time the software running at the desktop. but i need often more in parallel. i tried: https://github.com/kaueraal/run_scaled but i have a huge reaction lack of mouse movement and some parts of the screen are not updated correct. - not usable. at the moment i change screen resolution at one of my monitor to still use more than one instance of the software in parallel. but this is not comfortable, all other things i move to this monitor is also scaled.... if there is not a solution of scaling, maybe how to start 2 or 3 times inside the virtual machine the software and use spice to have access to all of them in parallel? (be careful, i do not think spice was developed in times of suse10.1) (mouse movement at spice with virtmanager is faster than vnc-virtmanger) simoN -- www.becherer.de

Remote desktops

I want to have remote desktops in to openSUSE systems. I currently use x11vnc to do this from other Linux computers. Connecting to an existing session as well as letting the session be shared are needed. x11vnc does this fine. We use the default display :0 for this. Recently (after leap 42.3 some time), it seems that x11vnc or X requires that one provide an authorization file to access the desktop. It is specified to x11vnc via the -auth option. This would generally not be a problem. Except finding the file to use is a bit of a hack. Where the files is located depends on, it seems, which display manager one is using. When using kdm, for example, the file(s) are in /var/lib/kdm/AuthFiles/. Other dms put them elsewhere. Which brings me to my real question. I start x11vnc via xinetd. In that context, I would like how to know what authorization file to use for display 0. That is the one we usually connect to and share. Initially, I had just edited the xinetd file with the name of the new authorization file, which is made each time the display manager starts. This was not nice. So I thought I might just use a wild card to get the name of the file in /var/lib/kdm/AuthFiles/ as there was only one. We only use display :0. Today, on a couple systems, I suddenly find more than one authorization file. I have no idea why. So the wild card thing will not be a real solution. How are others solving this? To be honest, I don't really want the auth thing. I would be quite happy to just disable it all together. But if that is not possible, how best to find out in an automated way (i.e., in a shell script) which auth file to specify to x11vnc? I am quite flexible in solutions. I'm not married to x11vnc.It just has been working fine. -- Roger Oberholtzer

clipboard behavior - text coding

Hi, since some days i recognized that in libreoffice or thunderbird, when i write a text with a "€" (euro-symbol) everiting seems ok. but when i mark the text with shift and arrow-keys then press strg+c and on a other place strg+v the euro symbol is replaced by a "?" (questionmark) if i mark the euro-symbol with mouse and press medium mouse button to copy, the euro-symbol is still there example: writing text: € copiing text: ? i have no idea where to check whats going on here. system is tumbleweed, kde, german i do not think its a tumbleweed bug, because same systems did not behavior like this. it must be a configuration problem. -- www.becherer.de

move root to new disk

Dear all, Possibly this topic was discussed several times, and there are a number of "tutorials" found on the web. Maybe too much. So: I would like to move my root partition to a brand new SSD, and keep /home on the old disk. I copied the existing one with dd and gave it a new UUID. How can I proceed? This is an UEFI machine. Since /boot/efi is tiny, I think it can remain where it is now. Should I create a swap on the SSD? And possibly the most important: how can I tell the laptop to use the root on the SSD.? I tried to unmount the existing /, but since it is in use, I cannot umount it. Thanks for the help.
