[opensuse] No SANE devices found

I have SuSE 13.2 and try to install Brother DCP-7040 as a scanner (before I had installed it as a printer, with some difficulties, but eventually with success). Now, since YaST Scanner does not support my Brother DCP-7040, I downloaded two rpm's from http://support.brother.com/: - brscan3-0.2.13-1.i386.rpm (for 32 bit) and - brscan3-0.2.13-1.x86_64.rpm (for 64 bit). At first, I successfully installed the 32 bit version invoking "rpm -ihv --nodeps brscan3-0.2.13-1.i386.rpm". But when I invoked /usr/bin/scanimage, I got the error message: *scanimage: no SANE devices found* So, I removed the installation and tried the 64 bit version. But then, at invoking /usr/bin/scanimage, I got the same error message. Now, I have two questions: Is /usr/bin/scanimage the correct program to be invoked for scanning? And if so, how can I create the missing SANE devices? Thank you in advance! [opensuse] windows 8.1 - openSUSE 13.2 dual boot

Hello: I have a computer with installed Windows 8.1. I have installed openSUSE 13.2 on this computer but unfortunately I did not look into the procedure beforehand supposing that openSUSE takes care of dual booting and installs a working boot manager. And it did, it installed a working boot manager which worked until I booted Windows 8.1. After that the openSUSE boot manager disappeared and the computer just boots directly Windows 8.1. Then I looked into this and found that in Windows I have to run bcdedit with the path pointing to openSUE boot manager file: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} "path\EFI\opensuse\shimx64.efi or bcdedit /set {bootmgr} "path\EFI\opensuse\grubx64.efi But when I mount the EFI partition in windows it does not have either of these files. What it has is a file EFI\opensuse\X with 0 byte size. So it's probably not the correct file. How could I restore openSUSE boot manager (grub2) without reinstalling openSUSE? Possibly by booting into openSUSE 13.2 and make the corrections in it. (Previous openSUSE install media had an option "boot installed system" which found and booted installed openSUSE OSs into graphical mode but I can't find such an option in 13.2 install DVD). One more thing: when I installed openSUSE I used expert partitioning and I did not set mount point /boot/EFI to /dev/sda2 (EFI partition). Unless I press the F2 key, the boot messages are hidden behind a picture called "openSuSE Artwork Team". Is it possible to have the boot messages shown immediately without pressing the F2 key? [opensuse] Switching to SSD

I'm wanting to switch to a 120-250 GB SSD drive for just an OS drive for Tumbleweed, and want my /home on my existing 1 TB spinning rust drive. My current partition setup is about as simple as it gets: > lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk ├─sda1 8:1 0 156M 0 part /boot/efi ├─sda2 8:2 0 4G 0 part [SWAP] ├─sda3 8:3 0 20G 0 part /var/log └─sda4 8:4 0 907.4G 0 part /home From what I've read, there are a ton of different things one has the option of doing when switching to a SSD drive, such as enabling trim, creating a tmpfs, changing the default scheduler from cfq to deadline, overprovisioning the drive and many others. Since SSD's are so popular nowadays, I'm surprised that they aren't more plug and play with openSUSE. SSD's are practically zero configuration under Windows 10, so why isn't the same with openSUSE? I was planning on using btrfs and from what I've read trim is automatically enabled, so I guess I can skip that step? If my 1 TB spinning rust drive will be my /home, then that will be the default location for FF's cache directory which means it will slow down the system. It sounds like bcache is an option for that dilemma, but I'm hearing mixed reviews on it with stories about corruption, bad performance, etc. So what is the best way to setup what I'm trying to do? Some guides so far I've found are below, the openSUSE wiki being completely out of date as the last version there listed is 11.4 which came out in 2011. [opensuse] network manager suddenly stopped working for no reason

On my dell XPS 13, I have a dual boot system with Windows 10. I had just restored a backup with Windows 10 and gotten it back up an running. Then I booted into opensuse (42.1, on laptop #2 below) and everything was running fine. The network was working as far as I could tell - it showed that it was connected via network manager. So I connected a backup drive, and decided to run ntfsclone on my windows partition to the backup windows partition. I don't know why this would have anything to do with what happened next, as it seems completely unrelated, but it seemed to happen right at the same time. I typed in the command ntfsclone --overwrite /dev/sdb3 /dev/sda3 and as soon as I hit enter, network manager gave me an indication that the network dropped off and it was trying to reconnect. It would not reconnect. It kept trying over and over, but it would not connect to the local network. (the ntfsclone operation ran without a problem, but it just seemed to trigger the network falling off) I tried first doing a systemctl restart NetworkManager.service, and it restarted, but it still would not connect to the network. Then I went into yast and switched over to wicked service. It found the network, and I entered the password, but it still would not connect to the network. So I did a google search (on my other computer next to me, which is running on the network just fine), and someone suggested that I enter the command netconfig update -f So I did that, and it generated a resolv.conf backup file, and suddenly the network worked again while I was using wicked! So I thought, great, now I can switch back to network manager in yast, and make network manager work again. But alas, no such easy help. When I switched back to network manager, it did the same thing as before. It would try and try to connect, but it wouldn't connect. So I tried running netconfig update -f while network manager was running, and it didn't help. Same problem still. So I switched back to wicked, and the network is running now, but only on wicked. I would really prefer to be able to use network manager. Any ideas? [opensuse] claws-mail on leap

I did something foolish and now I'm looking for help to understand what I did wrong and how to recover from it. I'm [still] setting up a new machine with Leap and have got to the scary part where I try to transfer my email account to it. I currently run a very old Evolution on a different old machine but want to move to Claws. I first installed Mint on the new machine and installed Claws and managed to set it up. I then ran up Evolution on the old machine to empty my ISP's mailbox, then shut that down and started Claws on Mint and checked that I could send and receive messages successfully. Then I shut down Mint and went back to using Evolution on my old machine. Time passed, I installed Leap on the new machine and installed Claws. Then I made my mistakes. Firstly I forgot to power up the old machine and download the mail from my ISP using Evolution. So there were a bunch of messages sitting there. Next I couldn't remember my mail password so I copied the Claws config from Mint to Leap and used that to start Claws. The good news is that it connected and downloaded over a hundred messages from my ISP. The bad news is that those messages don't seem to show up anywhere in Claws and I haven't managed to find them on the disk either. So I'd welcome any thoughts as to where Claws might have put them and why they didn't show up in its GUI. I do hope it hasn't deleted them!
