[opensuse] alias egrep failure (for zypper)

In order to make it easier than routinely typing zypper se -s packagestring | grep x86 | egrep -v 'src|devel|xtra' I tried to make an alias: alias zse6='zypper se -s $1 | grep x86 | egrep -v "src|devel|xtra" ' but it produces: # zse6 packagestring egrep: packagestring: No such file or directory What needs changing to return x86_64 packages exclusive of src, devel and xtra that contain the string packagestring? Why is egrep looking for any file or directory? If I swap each ' for " and vice versa, results are even worse. I tried escaping pipes and quotes, but it didn't get any better. Anyone know an easier way than manually typing zypper se -s packagestring | grep x86 | egrep -v 'src|devel|xtra' for x86_64 users to exclude 32 bit packages from search results? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." [opensuse] Odd SAMBA/BTRFS problem?

openSUSE 13.2 machine with btrfs for / Running samba-4.1.14-3.3.x86_64. Samba is configured to have the server act as a member server in a Windows Activedirectory domain. wbinfo -u and getent passwd work fine. getent passwd shows local and domain users. However, setfacl -n -R -m u:userX:rwx /testpath fails if userX is a domain user, but succeeds if userX is a local user. Using different specifications for userX ('domain\userX') still fail. [opensuse] dsl modem in openSUSE 13.2

Hello: I've installed openSUSE 13.2 from DVD (fresh install, not an update). I wanted to set up my DSL network in YAST as always before. But this time in YAST's network settings there is only a 'network devices' option. There are no options for adding any other device like DSL and modem (they used to be there). The network card was recognized and configured correctly. There was one difference, that I could not set 'traditional ifup' method; wicked service was set there. I don't know if this matters. How can I set my DSL modem and providers? I don't want to use network manager, I even haven't installed it. [opensuse] High power consumption Laptop

Hey, after installing 13.2 I'm struggling with several problems. One of the problems I haven't been able to solve yet, is the high power consumption of a ThinkPad T430s with Ivy bridge and Intel HD Graphics (NVidia Optimus is completely disabled via the BIOS). After activating powersave for Intel WiFi and Intel HDA Sound, the old 13.1 installation consumes about 8.5W at 60% screen brightness.[0] Under the same prerequisites, the 13.2 installation consumes 10.5W, i.e., 25% more. Powertop is clueless and thinks the display backlight consumes 9W ( and at 0% brightness 7W). According to http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTc3NTE there is a power regression in the Intel Graphics driver. Although the underlying change should only affect Haswell, there are reports that Ivy Bridge might suffer, too. However, forcing Frame Buffer Compression does not considerably reduce the power consumption of the 13.2 installation. Any ideas? [opensuse] rsyslog configuration

Hello I'm looking over the rsyslog configuration filed and I'm wondering about them seeming to be smaller than other systems and they are logging a lot of detail into /var/log/messages which is good... All the authorization and pam failures are loading into /var/log/message but I'm not sure why I see one line *.*;mail.none;news.none -/var/log/messages which is a puzzle. What exactly does *.* mean in this context. Does that mean that everything logs into /var/log/messages, regardless of where else it log. That doens't seem to match the behavior of the system. Does it mean that everything that is not matched explicitely is logged into /var/log/messages? Doesn't this make mail.none;news.none redundant? [opensuse] dsl network connection type setup in yast

Hello: The question applies to openSUSE 13.1, 13.2, possibly older versions too. What is the correct method to set up DSL network in YAST? What I would like to know exactly, what to choose in YAST Control Center -> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Overview -> Edit -> Network Card Setup -> Address tab. There are three options there: - No Link and IP Setup (Bonding Slaves) - Dynamic Address x) DHCP x) DHCP + Zeroconf x) Zeroconf - Statically assigned IP Address If I know correctly DSL does not use DHCP, but I don't have and assigned static IP address either. The provider assigns an IP address at every connection but not by DHCP (?) . If I set it to DHCP (in oS 12.2), network connection works but I have in /var/log/messages many: eth0: broadcasting for a lease eth0: timed out So, what is the correct setting?
