[opensuse] integrated system control

I have gotten curious about something as I read various tech trends, and maybe some of you all will know how to answer this. In the manufacturing industry, there are types of plants where you need centralized control for various components of a processing plant, like for example an oil refinery. A small scale type would have say 4 computers in an operator's control room running an HMI foroperator's input to plant control. These PCs usually havehardware and software that has connected them to whatever is controlling plant processes directly - usually PLCs or DCS or something like that. I think OPC is the industry standard for communication between PCs, PLCs, data loggers, historians, and other kinds of things in this kind of application. Naturally, since the operators are using computers, even if the computers are kind of locked out from regular use like soritng files and surfing theinternet, there would need to besome sort of security on these computers. There would need to be virus protection, firewalls, and other kinds of things. Manufacturers usually spend tons of money on windows based computers with a kind of software like Wonderware as the operator's HMI. However, there are some new companies that have developed Java based HMI applications that run fully on a linux pc (because it's java). I would be very interested to know if anyone out there knows someone who has designed/built a system with openSUSE running on the operator's HMIs. [opensuse] excessive nepomuk storage, can I move it

I have a large amount of photographs which I have nepomuk indexing and the storage space has become excessive, > 10gb, on an ssd drive. [opensuse] nmbd does not start at boot in openSUSE 12.2

nmbd demon does not start when my openSUSE 12.2 system is booted. smbd demon starts normally. This is openSUSE 12.2 with up to date kernel and samba packages, using systemd init. # ps -e|grep -i smb 3082 ? 00:00:00 smbd 3230 ? 00:00:00 smbd lnx:~ # ps -e|grep -i nmb lnx:~ # How can I fix this? [opensuse] Problem: "Message blocked due to spam content in email."

Hi, I have been using Thunderbird for years to send emails, both to group lists and to individual addressees. Suddenly, many of my outgoing emails have been blocked and marked as undeliverable. I am using opensuse 12.3, and 13.1 both with the same problem. I am using Thunderbird 17.0.7 from opensuse. I am using KDE 4.10.5 release 1 in opensuse 12.3. I have tried to do some investigation of this problem, and found that in the Thunderbird Help menu> Troubleshooting Information, there is a section that says that my mail is being blacklisted because Mesa is out of date, and to update it to version 7.10.3 or newer. Yet my current Mesa is 9.0.2 I don't know if this is causing the mail to be undeliveralble or if this is a separate problem. [opensuse] Installing OpenSuSE 12.3 with text-to-speech during installation: I heard this was possible though I cannot find anything on the internet about it

Hi all, I'm emailing to ask if this is possible. My environment is as follows: Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop The installation will be performed via booting to a USB drive and then allowing it to format the hard drive during installation I will install Gnome and orca as my desktop environment (and either Speakup or YASR for the terminals) A friend of mine who deals with linux all the time said that a friend of his managed OpenSuSE installation with speech output, though he couldn't remember the command for it. Do any of you guys by any chance? Thanks! [opensuse] Self extracting encrypted archive

Greetings list, I am trying to create (and test) a self extracting encrypted archive. I am having an issue when I test trying to extract the archive. Here's my stub: #!/bin/bash ARCHIVE=`awk '/^__ARCHIVE__/ { print NR + 1; exit 0; }' $0` tail -n+$ARCHIVE $0 | gpg --output - - | tar xz exit 0 __ARCHIVE__ I've already created the ascii armored archive: tar -cvzf - ~/tmp/archive | gpg --symmetric --armor --output ~/tmp/archive.tar.gz.asc I create the full self extracting file like so: cat ~/tmp/stub ~/tmp/archive.tar.gz.asc > ~/tmp/archive.sh Now when I run archive.sh to test this I receive the following errors: gpg: CAST5 encrypted data No protocol specified xprop: unable to open display ':0' No protocol specified gpg-agent[5310]: can't connect to the PIN entry module: End of file gpg-agent[5310]: command get_passphrase failed: No pinentry gpg: problem with the agent: No pinentry gpg: encrypted with 1 passphrase gpg: decryption failed: No secret key gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now A gentle nudge with the clue bat to help me figure out how to get the self extracting file to use gpg cli passphrase entry would be most appreciated. [opensuse] 64 bit vs 32 bit RAM consumption

In googling the possibility of using a 64 bit kernel on an otherwise 32 bit openSUSE (consensus: don't try it), I found quite a bit of mention of 64 bit apps using twice as much RAM? Is this true? Or is it just misunderstanding arising from 64 bit using twice as many CPU registers to increase its own speed? Or something else? My main system running 32 bit 11.4 has 4GB RAM and is consistently using >50% of RAM for open apps, most of the rest for disk cache, and always around 360MB unused. Would running 64 bit on this system be consuming virtually all RAM for apps, leaving little free for disk cache? FWIW, not all RAM is "cheap". To bring this DDR2 system up to its 8GB max would cost ~$63USD. To replace its 2X2GB sticks with 2X4GB (to free them for RAM upgrade to another system) would cost triple that. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
