[opensuse] How do I mount an NAS device on Suse 12.3?

I obtained a NAS, with a view toward running MySQL on a sever running MS Small Business Server 2003 (yes, I know, it is old, but I don't have authority to upgrade it or wipe it and install Linux on it). Anyway, the latest version of MySQL will not run on that machine. Therefore, I intend to run MySQL on the latest Suse (12.3) on a much newer server that I have almost fixed (this machine will have a 256 GB SSD). So, unless I can mount the NAS in such a way that MySQL on Suse can find it, the 4 TB NAS goes to waste (even though all machines on my LAN can see it and browse to it, which is fine if I only want to use Windows Explorer, or it's Linux equivalents, to copy files to it - but even on Windows, MySQL doesn't seem to see it unless I have mapped a specific MAS folder to a local drive letter, so I assume something similar is true on Linux). Hence my question. NB: I am a programmer, not a system administrator, so I am at a loss as to how to do this. NB: I did a Google search, which resulted in a very poor signal to noise ratio, but ended up confused by the different instructions given for the different distributions. And, worse, a lot of the pages I found were as old as that ancient SBS machine I can't use for this purpose. Obviously, things have changes a lot since then. OpenSuSE 12.3 X.0rg X Server 1.13.2 Release Date: 2013-01-24 Getting this message with xwininfo reporting (just before this error starts) less than 100 windows. Ok, I get it that there must be plenty of apps being ill-behaved and opening windows they probably shouldn't, but still. Yes, using the proprietary radeon driver, but I did that with 12.1 and never used to have this problem before 12.3. Google has not been helpful. Suggestions? TIA. [opensuse] Radeon (community version)

I post this more or less for the Google Spiders..... I don't know what happened to the community Radeon drivers for legacy ATI cards but whatever it was is pretty amazing. I can't remember a time when it worked better on my legacy X1400 (dell 9400) laptop, even when it was supported by the ATI proprietary drivers. I've been using the version from this Repository (opensuse 12.3 x86_64) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_12.3/ In the past there were problems with resume, switching from a text terminal, and stuttering music if the KDE Desktop effects were turned on, and gaming was hopeless. Switching to that repository fixed all the problems but still required desktop effects to be off or sound would sometimes stutter. Just for a test, after several recent updates to that repository, I tried ALL of the above at the same time, Full KDE bling, Streaming music, and a quake engine FPS game. It was awesome. Almost Flawless. Just the slightest (barely perceptible) temporary stutter in the music upon returning from a console, or resuming from suspend. Within 15 seconds all perfect. [opensuse] How is it with Intel Core i7 Max Turbo Frequency?

Hi, one hopefully short technical question. I have Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor, http://ark.intel.com/products/71459 having 4 cores, 8 threads and running on clock speed 2.4 GHz. It should be automatically overclocked to 3.4 GHz in case of need, but I wonder how this works. Does it require any communication with kernel or even with user? [opensuse] Report about nicely working UEFI secure boot

Hi, there are still discussions about level of support of UEFI secure boot in openSUSE. 12.3 has experimental support for secure boot. I installed it on HP ENVY dv6 and it works fine. I set it up as described in release notes http://tinyurl.com/ls9kgse and it is perfectly working. As I'm used to, I use encrypted LVM to secure whole root. It works fine. I don(t know how general is that experience, but I think I can encourage others to at least try it. :-) I didn't try multiboot, so that I can't comment that. [opensuse] Cant rename/remove /var/tmp in 12.3?

Hello, in all my linux installations, I used to replace /var/tmp by a symlink to a directory on my main user partition. The intent of this is to ensure that there is no private information on the root partition. With 12.3, this won't work anymore: raven:/ # mv /var/tmp /var/tmp-orig mv: cannot move ‘/var/tmp’ to ‘/var/tmp-orig’: Device or resource busy raven:/ # ls -ld /var/tmp drwxrwxrwt 15 root root 4096 Jul 31 10:41 /var/tmp raven:/ # getfacl /var/tmp getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: var/tmp # owner: root # group: root # flags: --t user::rwx group::rwx other::rwx raven:/ # df /var/tmp Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/cr_sda8 20649592 8361332 11239320 43% / I get the same error when trying to delete. Even rebooting into single user mode won't help. Any ideas why the directory appears to be busy? Even if I remove all the contents of the directory, it still appears to be busy. Hi all, I have just noted that the latest official texlive update from the repo-update for openSUSE 12.3 wants to install 749 upgrades and 348 new packages. No problem with the upgrades; the problem is about the new packages: they are all -devel and texlive-*-doc packages. In particular, the -devel packages are required by freeglut-devel that is required by texlive-asymptote. Now, the questions are: - is it correct that texlive-asymptote requires freeglut-devel? - how can I prevent the installation of all -doc packages? [opensuse] Gramps update problem

Since short I have started to use Gramps genealogical software. The stable version 3.4.2-2.1.2 is on offer for 12.3 Tumbleweed. As there is a completely rewrite of this software developed I found this version 4.0.1-33.1 build by ecsos, found at: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/ecsos/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ I have put this site on the repositories and gave it the lowest number of all repos. Since two days I ran into following problem. Zypper dup wants to replace the 4,0.1 with the 3.4.2. Strange because the 4.01 has a higher number and the 3.4.2 has a higher repository number. I do not lock the 4.0.1 because than I would not get eventual updates.
