[opensuse] Console rotation

Hello List I use my primary display in portrait orientation. This works fine in KDE, but leaves the text console displayed 'sideways'. I have tried using the fbcon=rotate:x kernel parameter, but the kernel config lists the feature as unset. Is there any way to enable this without re-compiling the kernel (every time there is an update...) [opensuse] Ctl-Alt-Fn no longer works

Since the recent update, I can no longer use Ctl-Alt-Fn to switch to a text console on my main computer. However, it still works on my ThinkPad. Any idea what might have caused this? I can install OS and boot the installed system with mem=4096M. For the installation I also had to use "nomodeset vga=normal". These are second hand Rackable Systems half depth servers (GA around 2007/2008), 16 x 2GB memory modules and 2 x AMD Opteron 2350 on Asus KFSN4-DRE/SAS. Think of them as a whitebox servers or highend desktops. I ran memtest as suggested in the list and it complained, quickly. Given I have two machines exhibiting the same issue, I'm tempted to think it's a configuration thing. I'll have to look at memory timing parameters or whatever can be set at the BIOS. I have been looking for squid 2.7 for opensuse 12.3 - no luck. Does anyone know where I might find it? [opensuse] how to activate xfce icon theme

12.3 Hi everyone I dropped a new tar.gz icon theme on the xfce settings > appearance > icons. It appears on the list. If I select it, the icons do not change. In fact if I choose any of the other themes they don't change either. I have logged out and back in but nada. What do I have to to in order to activate the icons? [opensuse] List packages from specific patch (with zypper)?

Recently I was presented by software update window with new patch that wanted to install new KDE with several GB of size. I do not have KDE installed at all so I canceled it and run "zypper patch". It installed a dozen of packets; but it apparently did also install openSUSE-2013-353 which provides new KDE. How can I list packages included in specific patch (or, better - packages on system install by specific patch)? I'm just curious what *was* installed from this big KDE patch here? [opensuse] Booting from LiveCD dumped on a directory (LiveHD)

Since the official KDE LiveCD image is too big to fit on a CD, I am trying to boot into openSUSE 12.3 by dumping the contents of the ISO file into a directory (/boot/openSUSE) on /dev/sda1, and then configuring LILO to boot from it. I've been able to do this on Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora, but unfortunately in openSUSE I'm met with the message "Searching for boot device in Application ID..." and then "Failed to find MBR identifier!". I thought that setting `nombridcheck' would help, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Here is the "most correct" version of what I got so far, although I tried with many other parameters: image = /boot/openSUSE/boot/i386/loader/linux label = "openSUSE 12.3" root = "UUID=98960673-d777-4ca5-93d0-56065ea9e56e" initrd = /boot/openSUSE/boot/i386/loader/initrd addappend = "ramdisk_size=512000 ramdisk_blocksize=4096 quiet preloadlog=/dev/null showopts kiwidebug=1 livecd_config=/boot/openSUSE/config.isoclient" Is it possible to boot the Live openSUSE medium in such way? [opensuse] Javascript, Ajax & JQuery misbehaving in Firefox 20 on 12.3 KDE 4.10.2

Hi All, A site that I regularly administer has started misbehaving in Firefox since my upgrade to 12.3 (actually a clean, fresh install.) The breakage happens on pages where Javascript, Ajax and JQuery are providing interfaces to selected admin and editing functions. Problems like 'submit' buttons not doing anything ... no errors ... just nothing. Konqueror and Chrome seem to be fine (limited testing) so, on the off chance that something was 'stuck' in my transplanted profile, I closed Firefox and saved it (mv ~/.mozilla to ~/.mozilla_keep) then relaunched Firefox to test it again ... no change. From 'about:plugins' in Firefox: IcedTea-Web Plugin (using IcedTea-Web 1.3.1 (suse-4.1.5-x86_64)) File: IcedTeaPlugin.so Any ideas, other than switching browsers :-) ? Another 'wrinkle' ... possibly related, possibly not ... is someone else running a current version of Firefox is seeing the same problem on a Micro$oft box. In my experience it is a hardware issue of some kind (bad disk, cables, ram, power supply, etc.) I have nothing against rsync, but if you want/need functionality like the above, the ewftools package I mentioned can also do it. ewfacquire is a tool that will copy all the sectors of a physical disk into a large file. It does add CRC/hash info to the "image" file. It also will break the image file up into segments. I have used 2GB segments very often, so a 500GB drive image would require 250 segment files to hold it. It also supports multiple compression levels, so it often compresses down pretty significantly. To verify the image still is an accurate copy of what was read you can use ewfverify. It will verify the CRCs and an overall hash. To restore the image, ewfexport. To just work with the image as if it was one large file like a simple dd to a file would create, you use ewfmount.
