[opensuse] chroot questions

Back in the day, I used to maintain a Gentoo tree in a directory in a different Linux distro (possibly Caldera, or an early SUSE). Then, when I wanted to build software in the Gentoo tree using Gentoo tools and all, I would: cd /where/one/finds/gentoo-20XX.1 export g=`pwd` mount -t proc proc $g/proc cp -p /$g/etc/resolv.conf $g/etc/resolv.conf.keep cp /etc/resolv.conf $g/etc/resolv.conf chroot $g /bin/bash env-update source /etc/profile Mainly, I copied the name resolution stuff, mounted /proc in the gentoo tree, and updated the environment. Then, I could pretty much act as though I had booted Gentoo. It worked great. My question is if I could go do something similar today with openSUSE, but with some other version of openSUSE in the 'foreign' tree. I think my biggest concern is /run and /var/run. And which versions would play nice together. I am primarily compiling things in this environment. No kernel stuff. It is a bit like cross compiling, but without setting up cross compilers. Just a copy of the target environment. I know many people suggest just using a VM for this. It may result in that. But I just have to try the chroot method as it is much easier to access from make files and such places. Just curious if there are some show stoppers that would render my time trying this wasted. I finally have the disk space I need to do these foolish things... [opensuse] 12.3 install fails on reboot

I have just tried to install opensuse 12.3 on a Sun Ultra 20 that had previously been running 11.0 I think. The install seems to go without problem until it gets to the part where it reboots after copying the packages. The boot usually gets to this point and hangs: found a linux console terminal on /dev/console I tried a bit of searching http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Support but haven't found anything on this yet. Has anyone else seen this and can point me in the right direction? [opensuse] how to fix boot error message

Since two weeks ago after updates the old annoying boot message came back. It's not high priority bug but annoying message: GRUB loading Welcome to GRUB! error: file '/boot/grub2/locale/en.mo.gz' not found. If you know how to fix it please share that info and receive my full appreciation. The system is running openSUSE 12.2 x86_64 KDE 4.10.2 and another running openSUSE 12.2 x86_64 KDE 4.8.5. [opensuse] R packages

Hello, Fedora has very nicely packaged contribution packages for R (http://www.r-project.org/) try to browse https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/ and they have tools to do it, see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:R We have http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/languages:/R:/ but it is practically empty. :-( Well, it would be very nice to have all the tones of R packages from mirrors like http://cran.r-project.org/ , http://www.rforge.net/ or http://www.bioconductor.org/ It is possible to install R's packages using R's tools, but very often it has to be compiled, which can be very tricky. Now, there is now way how to do it easily - just see logs and from errors guess which libraries are required... And sometimes I find, that it requires unavailable packages. Like recent upgrade of RGoogleMaps requiring libpng14, which I didn't find for openSUSE 12.3... But it's just small example... [12.3 64Bit KDE]-Any Safe Method To Slow Down CPU? Hi, Running openSUSE 12.3 64Bit KDE on a ridiculously fast desktop. I am a video game software developer and was wondering if it was possible to safely under-clock my fast CPU so I could test game engine performance? Fast desktop has an AMD FX 3.5GHz(4GHz Max Turbo) 8-Core CPU. Was just wondering if there was some safe method to under-clock this CPU through some openSUSE command? (was hoping to clock the CPU to about 1GHz) For now, I've been using my Internet box with an Intel Atom 1.8GHz CPU. Would prefer using the other fast desktop though. (rarely have the want to play Half-Life 2 in WINE and the Atom CPU can't run it) Let me know, thanks! [opensuse] Intel Graphics

I am running 12 3 on a box with Intel GMA HD 3000 2000 on board graphics chip and KDE 4 10. I have two monitors attached and can set up dual screens using the kde settings. This does not affect other DE's such as xfce. Is there a way to set up the monitiors globally so that the setting is available to DE's other than KDE4 please ? [opensuse] Latest updates caused problems?

There were some updates [eg, KDE to 4.10.2] yesterday and today (my time) following which: 1. my Daily version (version 23.0a1) of Thunderbird no longer displays any messages (OK, I know that I am using Daily and not the 'standard' version so if it breaks I get to keep the pieces; I had to go back to a backup of .thunderbird which is several days old and use TB 17.05); 2. I now get an error message on boot - into 12.3 and 12.2 [as both have had the (?)same updates] - that something called "python script engine" is required but this is nowhere to be found; and 3. the "py" widget, which gets rid of the annoying "cashew" widget, doesn't get loaded because of the missing "python script engine". Is anyone else experiencing this sudden deteriotation of behaviour or know of how to overcome this problem? [opensuse] Is there a video screen capture tool in the release?

All, I want to capture some video of my screen with the mouse moving for training/documentation purposes. Is there a tool for that? I saw camstudio recommended somewhere else, but I don't see it included.
