[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. Guys, With the iphone we were able to configure good print function via CUPS/Avahi, is there anything similar that can be done with an Android tablet? Looking, it doesn't appear that there is any basic print capability provided by Android (3.2 Honeycomb). I would like to print to by openSuSE server in the same manner I do from iOS. Anybody found a good solution? I have found PrintBot, but that isn't a solution because it cannot be used legally where confidentiality is required. (data is transferred to a 3rd party server before printing). I need to find a direct print solution. What says the braintrust? -- David C. In another thread I mentioned that when I switch on my external 2TB USB WD HDD, Dolphin accesses it and displays its contents to me; but then when I go to use mc (Midnight Commander) this device is no longer mounted in /media as it has been in past many years but now is found in /var/run/media/<username>/<devicename> [in this case the volume name is WD]. Quite by accident a few minutes ago ('cause I am having another hassle, to be describe later) I discovered that the device is ALSO mounted in 'run/media/<username>/<device>'. (How many times is such a device 'mounted' and where else may I find it?) Has anyone else found this to be the case? For many years, I have pressed F2 to run stuff such as man, by entering #<command> in the pop up box. For some reason, this has now broken. When I do that, Seamonkey opens, which does not know how to handle those commands, instead of Konqueror. Firefox is set as the default browser. Any idea on how I can get this to work properly again? 12.3 zypper up'd today Hi I have disabled firewall using Yast however, each time I reboot, the firewall is always started. I have to go back into Yast and Disable/stop it each boot. [opensuse] Problem with inodes on SuSE 12.1 and /var ?

Hello, I had SuSE 10.3 installed on my laptop. Backup of /var/spool/news onto some NAS was ok. Then formatted swap (swap filesys), / (ext4 filesys) /var (ext4 filesys) in the same size it was before. No other special settings, just the ones that are given and used by yast2 and SuSE 12.1 and ext4 . Installed SuSE 12.1 which was ok. When I tried to play back /var/spool/news with all the leafnode usenet news, after some time the system said something like "No space left on device" :-( The partition has exactly the same size. With SuSE 10.3 there was no problem concerning size. Were there any changes in the filesystem structure of SuSE 12.1 and ext4, e.g. inodes or similar, which makes /var under SuSE 12.1 run full earlier? How can I solve that? Reinstall with ext3 and SuSE 12.1 ? Put /var under / and reformat /var (which might be tricky)? [opensuse] 12.3 + ntfs + ext4 + USB3 + different copying speeds

I bought a Seagate 2TB USB3 external HDD today and formatted 75% of it with ext4 file system and 25% with ntfs - using latest version of Gparted. My two internal 1TB Seagates are SATA 3 and formatted with ext4 except for one partition (ntfs) which has XP installed, but which is rarely used (it's mainly there to bring me back to earth and to remind me how bloody aweful Windows is). I use mc (Midnight Commander) 99.99% of the time to manage my files. After I formatted the external HDD (as described above) I went to copy files from my main system to the new external HDD - which is to be used for backups. What I found - and which is what I am now asking about - is that when, using mc, that when copying files to the *ext4* formatted partition the files where being copied across at ~80MB/s. The files copied over were a mixture of ntfs and ext4 files (which I had copied from a collapsing 32-bit system to my current *Linux* system last year when I replaced the old computer). However, when I went to copy files to the *ntfs* formatted part of the new external HDD, the best transfer rate I got was ~28MB/s - which looks very much like what I used to get when using USB2! So, why the *big* difference in transfer rates between copying files to a partition formatted in *ext4* and one formatted in *ntfs*?! What system am a I using? Look at my signature line; but I understand that some brain-dead mail clients drop the signature line so for these people with brain-dead mailers the sig. line is: Using openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 with KDE 4.10.1 & kernel 3.8.4-1 Any suggestions, please, as to why there is such a difference in the transfer rates between the 2 file systems, and how can this be overcome? [opensuse] Dark screen

Recently my wife closed my laptop folding down the screen. When I reopened it, it remained dark. Since the computer was connected to other computers by NFS, I could see that it was still running. The only way to have a light screen again, was rebooting the computer. Is there a better way to revitalize a sleeping laptop? I guess it had to happen some day, and it seems that that day has arrived :-) . We have reached Windows standards were one thinks that it is not unusual to get a system response which states, "Press any key to continue or press any other key to quit" :-D . Overnight (my time) the stable, standard, kernel was ugraded from 3.8.4-1 to 3.8.5-1 and so in my usual way I went into a terminal and ran "zypper dup --from XX" [where XX is the kernel's repo number]. And I got the message that there are 3 problems: kernel-desktop 3.8.3-1 is not compatible..... kernel-desktop 3.8.3-1 is not compatible.... kernel-devel 3.8.3-1 is not compatible..... But wait, I have kernel 3.8.4-1 installed so why am I being told that an earlier version of the kernel is incompatible?! I check in KinfoCenter and it shows that I have 3.8.4-1 installed..... Strange.... BUT the best part of all of this is: The message which zypper gives me after telling me that kernel 3.8.3-1 is incompatible consists of 4 options which I am allowed to select in order to "solve" the problem of the incompatibility of 3.8.3-1. I can either: 1 press 1 to retain kernel 3.8.3-1 s skip [this first problem] r retry [this first problem to see if it has now gone away] c to cancel [quit] [my attempt to install the newer kernel] I don't believe what I see and decide that pressing "s" will get me to an entry which will allow me to install the latest kernel (3.8.5-1). I press "s". "No way, Jose!". I am back where I started..... "kernel - desktop 3.8.3-1 is not compatible....." :-) ---- and so on, etc etc. "Nah", I says to meself, "this has never happened before so I will go back to my installation of 12.2 and prove that THAT works fine!" "No way, Jose". 12.2 is doing exactly the same thing! But with one variation: in 12.2, KinfoCenter is showing that I have kernel 3.8.4-1 installed but the message I get from zypper is that kernel (!)3.8.2-1 is not compatible. We are living in interesting times..... :-) . Fortunately, YaST2 still works as intended [I *think* and hope] and I have kernel 3.8.5-1 installed in 12.3 and 12.2 as well :-) . Hi, I recently installed OS12.3 on a new laptop. Most things are OK, espescially since I installed the AMD-video driver. Unfortunately, I can't play DVD's. I followed the wiki about restricted formats and installed the needed rpm's. Hi all, I have just installed OpenSuSE 12.3 but I have run into this problem. I have no problem mounting devices as root user, but it does not work when I am a normal user. No password popping out the request, too. The problem do not shows up in other two installations. I have no clue about what could have gone wrong. resending, html denied me the first time. so my previous install of 12.1 started giving me difficulties and I decided to try an upgrade; I got all sorts of errors, decided to just reinstall with the iso. now I'm left with a (virtual) machine that I can't seem to update or even use half the things I expect. after install the 12/3 OS seems to insist on ipv6, or possibly more accurately refuse to just use ipv4. Hi Folks, I'm using 12.3 and liking it. But a problem with the sound mixer that existed in 12.2 is still here. It manifests itself for me with tvtime, where the cursor left/right keys don't control the volume. The fix is to run: /sbin/modprobe snd-mixer-oss I tried without success to get this to run automatically at boot time to no avail. Does anyone know the current ju-ju to load this kernel module at boot time? I am updating (fresh install) to v12.3. It looks very good so far. However, I am very unhappy with the new texlive packaging. Several reasons. * Very complex and confusing. It is very, very difficult to find out what collections/schemes are needed to get a particular latex package. * Each package has a rpm overhead; it must be downloaded separately; it must be installed separately (whether in a collection or not). Most inefficient. * The previous packaging provided what I needed out of the box. Now, none of the collections do -- even the collection claimed to be closest to the original one. I have to go find and install some individual ones separately (elsarticle, revtex4; lineno is picked up if I include the 'latexextra' collection). * It is a very long process to remove texlive entirely. I tried with YaST2. Removing collections is not difficult, but there are many font and bin rpms left over with no supervising parent that I can see. Each one requires 2 clicks to delete. I keep an ascii list of rpms. With about 4000 entries, nearly half are texlive stuff, and it could be worse. There may be some good reasons to try the packaging change. Currently, however, it is not implemented well at all. I hope the next release either restores the previous packaging, or makes huge improvements. Hello, I did not read all the SuSE files but does anybody know if "CVE-2013-2266: A Maliciously Crafted Regular Expression Can Cause Memory Exhaustion in named" [ http://cxsecurity.com/issue/WLB-2013030255 ] is already adressed in the SuSE 12.1 updates ( http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/ )?
