On 12.3, I seem to be collecting a few of these in /tmp, right now 187. [opensuse] Adding fonts to openSUSE via a script.

In earlier versions of openSUSE, if I added fonts to X11, I would place the .ttf files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/, and then run SuSEconfig -module fonts In 12.3 and later, this is obviously not the way to do this. So, 1. Where should the font files be placed? Assume a default X setup as done by openSUSE 12.3 or later. Is it now /usr/local/share/fonts/ ? 2. What should I run to get the fonts properly registered? Perhaps I need to add a file to /etc/fonts/conf.d/ ? As I am not wanting to define a new font location, all I really need is for the system to update the fonts found in the existing locations. I have looked at /etc/fonts/conf.d/README and /etc/fonts/conf.d/55-local.conf, but am none the wiser. The descriptions I find via Googla either reference SuSEconfig or explain how to GUI it. [opensuse] ext3 vs reiser vs ... ?

Hi again, all -- The last thing I need to figure out for my happy new system is what FS to use. I've been a big fan of Reiser for a long time (although I haven't kept up with any development news), but ext3 (as ext2 + journal) is a solid standard and drivers and utils are available under Windows (and in fact I have in the past put such things in a tiny DOS-fs slice at the back end of the disk) for "just in case". There are others (no, I'm not considering NTFS :-) out there, too, that I haven't even met. Now that I've met SuSE Studio, though, and shouldn't have to worry about booting from some random live ISO in the event of a system crash, maybe it's time to just pick the best FS for my needs. This will be primarily a large-disk (~4T or, via striping, perhaps ~5T) data storage system for backups, media, and other fun stuff; I don't expect lots of dynamic activity as on a desktop or compiling system but instead figure I'll see large write batches (backups, copies, etcetc) and mostly sequential reads, but we'll have mostly small and medium files and probably not a lot of really big files. The disks themselves will hold content and be fairly static; my SuSE Studio boot image goes on a uSD card in a USB slot and that's where any /tmp or other work will be. I'll probably end up running a small web server as well as samba, but again that shouldn't affect the spinning bits. Any thoughts, shy of religious warfare, on the best FS to use for a data and archive server? [opensuse] Screensaver not starting

Hi All, I'm having an issue with the screensaver not starting correctly. Whether it is triggered automatically (by the inactivity timeout) or manually via the screen-locker plasmoid/applet, I see the following effect: The "Simple locker" (basic wallpaper with password entry box) shows every time; sometimes, the configured graphical screensaver then starts, but other times it does not (leaving the simple locker displayed.) I have tried changing the screensaver settings with no effect. Any suggestions would be welcome... Is there any email service that check email address format validation (IE: gmail) ? [opensuse] slow vbox boot

Hi More curiosity than anything else but 13.1 rc1 on vbox boots in 30 seconds whereas 12.3 take 90 seconds on the same host. I tried the 13.1 version, 4.2.18 on 12.3 by uninstalling vbox from the guest and using the 13.1 version from the vbox site. Exactly the same boot time on 12.3. Any idea why the boot takes longer on 12.3 or even better, why 13.1 is so much quicker? [opensuse] How do you use Kontact?

Well, I tried Kontact for the first time a couple hours ago. I figured it would not be that different from MS Outlook (not that I am a fan of Outlook). I was was not exactly impressed. I was able to get it to connect to my gmail account, for example (it told me that a connection was established), but it did not the headers for my email messages. It did not, in fact, create any of the initial folders that the Getting started chapter of the manual says it should. Similarly, I was able to get it to (appear to) connect to my gmail calendar, but I see no evidence of the calendar entries in it. I then adjusted a couple minor settings (just changing the values of a couple checkboxes), and now Kntact will not start at all. This is on OpenSuse 12.3, and the Kontact manual refers to KDE 4.7. What I really wanted to get to is to somehow get my Blackberry Z10 to synchronize it's calendar with that on this Linux box (over WiFi - which is supported by my router), so that if I make an appointment while I am out and about, I will never be 'double booked', and will always have sufficient time for transit between appointments. I have not succeeded in getting my Blackberry to use my google calendar directly, but my hope is I can get the blackberry to interact properly with Kontact (or other, better, PIM), and that is the main reason why I investigated Kontact to begin with (my other interest is in investigating how to digital signing and encryption into my email). Otherwise, I'd just use Firefox just like I do on all my other machines. So, I guess the first question is, is Kontact production ready (or was I just unlucky the first time)? Or is there a better PIM? And the second would be, is it possible to have Kontact (or alternative PIM if that is the way to go) syncronize the calendar with that on my stupid phone (I won't call it a smart phone until it shows smart behaviour ;-). Understand, I am not looking for anything fancy: just reliable functionality. I just want to be able to get it all set up and just use it. I do not need to worry about managing the schedules of different members of a group, or anything that sophisticated. I just want to be able to read my email on this machine, and to manage my gmail calendar using it, and use it to syncronize my Blackberry's calendar with the gmail calendar (my searching the web indicates that gmail and the Blackberry calendar don't seem to like each other; though if anyone has current information to the contrary, I'd love to read about it). [opensuse] AutoYaST - Automated installation from openSUSE 12.3 DVD does not work

Hi folks, I am helping someone that he want to use the automated installation with AutoYaST and the openSUSE installation DVD. The issue is that YaST could not find the DVD YaST2 repository. We went as follows: 1. Download the openSUSE 12.3 DVD ISO 2. Install the "ISO master" from Packman 3. Modify the ISO: add the AutoYaST file to /autoinst.xml 4. Modify the ISO: add boot parameter in the file /boot/x86_64/loader/isolinux.cfg: install=cd autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml The hint comes from: <http://users.suse.com/~ug/AutoYaST_FAQ.html#a6> 5. Save the new ISO content 6. Boot the ISO in VirtualBox for test. AutoYaST starts automatically. 7. While system probing we get an error message: --- START --- Unable to create repository from URL 'cd:/?devices=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-VBOX_CD-ROM-VB2-01700376'. Details: [|] Valid metadata not found at specified URL History: - [|] Repository type can't be determined. Try again? --- END --- We had tried following boot parameter: 1. install=cd autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 2. autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 3. autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml install=cd 4. install=cd:/ autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 5. install=cd:/?devices=sr0 autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 6. install=cd:/?devices=sr* autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 7. namescheme="" autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 8. namescheme="" install=cd autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml But none of them works. Interesting issue is if we select "Source HTTP" instead "Source DVD" in the boot menu. YaST adds the online OSS repository but it could not find the AutoYaST file anymore. It is so weird. The error message is: --- START --- An error occured while fetching the profile: Reading file on /var/adm/mount//autoinst.xml filed. Reading file on /autoinst.xml failed. Reading a file on CD failed: /tmp/YaST-02942-IMvaKW/tmp_mount//autoinst.xml. --- END --- The question is: How we can fixed it in the boot parameter for the openSUSE 12.3 DVD installation?
