[opensuse] SuSE 12.3 - dual monitors

Hello Group - Running 12.3 and everything is stable. I'm a new SuSE user but a long-time user of Ubuntu. So far I like this implementation (or can find work arounds for the things I like less) with the exception of dual monitor support. In Ubuntu I install the Nvidia driver and when I close my laptop lid the display shifts to the monitor, and that's it. It just works. Not so in SuSE 12.3. * After I install the Nvidia driver (because Nouveau doesn't seem to recognize the second monitor ), * Each time I change from stand alone laptop to laptop with monitor I have to reconfigure the "monitor"section of "desktop configuration" and select the monitor as primary. And it doesn't work 100%. * Even when configure the Power settings to turn off the integrated monitor when the laptop lid closes, when I open an app it will often display that app on the other, non-active display, even though it's closed and the desktop config has named the monitor as primary. [opensuse] Adding fonts to openSUSE via a script.

In earlier versions of openSUSE, if I added fonts to X11, I would place the .ttf files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/, and then run SuSEconfig -module fonts In 12.3 and later, this is obviously not the way to do this. So, 1. Where should the font files be placed? Assume a default X setup as done by openSUSE 12.3 or later. Is it now /usr/local/share/fonts/ ? 2. What should I run to get the fonts properly registered? Perhaps I need to add a file to /etc/fonts/conf.d/ ? As I am not wanting to define a new font location, all I really need is for the system to update the fonts found in the existing locations. I have looked at /etc/fonts/conf.d/README and /etc/fonts/conf.d/55-local.conf, but am none the wiser. The descriptions I find via Googla either reference SuSEconfig or explain how to GUI it. [opensuse] ext3 vs reiser vs ... ?

Hi again, all -- The last thing I need to figure out for my happy new system is what FS to use. I've been a big fan of Reiser for a long time (although I haven't kept up with any development news), but ext3 (as ext2 + journal) is a solid standard and drivers and utils are available under Windows (and in fact I have in the past put such things in a tiny DOS-fs slice at the back end of the disk) for "just in case". There are others (no, I'm not considering NTFS :-) out there, too, that I haven't even met. Now that I've met SuSE Studio, though, and shouldn't have to worry about booting from some random live ISO in the event of a system crash, maybe it's time to just pick the best FS for my needs. This will be primarily a large-disk (~4T or, via striping, perhaps ~5T) data storage system for backups, media, and other fun stuff; I don't expect lots of dynamic activity as on a desktop or compiling system but instead figure I'll see large write batches (backups, copies, etcetc) and mostly sequential reads, but we'll have mostly small and medium files and probably not a lot of really big files. The disks themselves will hold content and be fairly static; my SuSE Studio boot image goes on a uSD card in a USB slot and that's where any /tmp or other work will be. I'll probably end up running a small web server as well as samba, but again that shouldn't affect the spinning bits. Any thoughts, shy of religious warfare, on the best FS to use for a data and archive server? [opensuse] Screensaver not starting

Hi All, I'm having an issue with the screensaver not starting correctly. Whether it is triggered automatically (by the inactivity timeout) or manually via the screen-locker plasmoid/applet, I see the following effect: The "Simple locker" (basic wallpaper with password entry box) shows every time; sometimes, the configured graphical screensaver then starts, but other times it does not (leaving the simple locker displayed.) I have tried changing the screensaver settings with no effect. Any suggestions would be welcome... [opensuse] slow vbox boot

Hi More curiosity than anything else but 13.1 rc1 on vbox boots in 30 seconds whereas 12.3 take 90 seconds on the same host. I tried the 13.1 version, 4.2.18 on 12.3 by uninstalling vbox from the guest and using the 13.1 version from the vbox site. Exactly the same boot time on 12.3. Any idea why the boot takes longer on 12.3 or even better, why 13.1 is so much quicker?
