[opensuse] How do you use Kontact?

Well, I tried Kontact for the first time a couple hours ago. I figured it would not be that different from MS Outlook (not that I am a fan of Outlook). I was was not exactly impressed. I was able to get it to connect to my gmail account, for example (it told me that a connection was established), but it did not the headers for my email messages. It did not, in fact, create any of the initial folders that the Getting started chapter of the manual says it should. Similarly, I was able to get it to (appear to) connect to my gmail calendar, but I see no evidence of the calendar entries in it. I then adjusted a couple minor settings (just changing the values of a couple checkboxes), and now Kntact will not start at all. This is on OpenSuse 12.3, and the Kontact manual refers to KDE 4.7. What I really wanted to get to is to somehow get my Blackberry Z10 to synchronize it's calendar with that on this Linux box (over WiFi - which is supported by my router), so that if I make an appointment while I am out and about, I will never be 'double booked', and will always have sufficient time for transit between appointments. I have not succeeded in getting my Blackberry to use my google calendar directly, but my hope is I can get the blackberry to interact properly with Kontact (or other, better, PIM), and that is the main reason why I investigated Kontact to begin with (my other interest is in investigating how to digital signing and encryption into my email). Otherwise, I'd just use Firefox just like I do on all my other machines. So, I guess the first question is, is Kontact production ready (or was I just unlucky the first time)? Or is there a better PIM? And the second would be, is it possible to have Kontact (or alternative PIM if that is the way to go) syncronize the calendar with that on my stupid phone (I won't call it a smart phone until it shows smart behaviour ;-). Understand, I am not looking for anything fancy: just reliable functionality. I just want to be able to get it all set up and just use it. I do not need to worry about managing the schedules of different members of a group, or anything that sophisticated. I just want to be able to read my email on this machine, and to manage my gmail calendar using it, and use it to syncronize my Blackberry's calendar with the gmail calendar (my searching the web indicates that gmail and the Blackberry calendar don't seem to like each other; though if anyone has current information to the contrary, I'd love to read about it). [opensuse] AutoYaST - Automated installation from openSUSE 12.3 DVD does not work

Hi folks, I am helping someone that he want to use the automated installation with AutoYaST and the openSUSE installation DVD. The issue is that YaST could not find the DVD YaST2 repository. We went as follows: 1. Download the openSUSE 12.3 DVD ISO 2. Install the "ISO master" from Packman 3. Modify the ISO: add the AutoYaST file to /autoinst.xml 4. Modify the ISO: add boot parameter in the file /boot/x86_64/loader/isolinux.cfg: install=cd autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml The hint comes from: <http://users.suse.com/~ug/AutoYaST_FAQ.html#a6> 5. Save the new ISO content 6. Boot the ISO in VirtualBox for test. AutoYaST starts automatically. 7. While system probing we get an error message: --- START --- Unable to create repository from URL 'cd:/?devices=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-VBOX_CD-ROM-VB2-01700376'. Details: [|] Valid metadata not found at specified URL History: - [|] Repository type can't be determined. Try again? --- END --- We had tried following boot parameter: 1. install=cd autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 2. autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 3. autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml install=cd 4. install=cd:/ autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 5. install=cd:/?devices=sr0 autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 6. install=cd:/?devices=sr* autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 7. namescheme="" autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml 8. namescheme="" install=cd autoyast=file:///autoinst.xml But none of them works. Interesting issue is if we select "Source HTTP" instead "Source DVD" in the boot menu. YaST adds the online OSS repository but it could not find the AutoYaST file anymore. It is so weird. The error message is: --- START --- An error occured while fetching the profile: Reading file on /var/adm/mount//autoinst.xml filed. Reading file on /autoinst.xml failed. Reading a file on CD failed: /tmp/YaST-02942-IMvaKW/tmp_mount//autoinst.xml. --- END --- The question is: How we can fixed it in the boot parameter for the openSUSE 12.3 DVD installation? [opensuse] mirroring & striping thoughts

Hi, all -- I can finally talk to my two new 4T drives (see my GPT post); yay. Now to think about data protection. I have for a long time used "poor man's mirroring" by mounting two devices and keeping content in sync across them. Not only does it give me undelete capability because operations happen on each dev separately, but it also ensures that I'll have a working disk if my system dies and I have to start over with, say, some live-image build. The other thing I usually do is carve off a small partition at the back end of the disk in which to store device and content information; that's a simple DOS FS readable by anything and so no matter what I can find what pieces are what. On the other hand, it's a pain to keep the two in sync. Now that I've discovered SuSE Studio and shouldn't ever have to fall back to a generic ISO boot, perhaps it's time to think about actual mirroring, or even striping and mirroring. I have these 2ae 4T drives plus a pair each of 500G and 400G drives; I could at least stripe the smaller ones into almost-1T virtual disks, or maybe I string together all three (do I actually stripe, or merely concatenate, since other than that they are all SATA I don't really know the relative speeds?) on each side to get almost 5T (which of course would look like 4.5T in binary numbers; stupid disk manufacturers!) of uninterrupted space. But I'm a newbie as well as easily worried :-) Meanwhile, disks only get bigger (and stay full :-) and so I expect that I'll be swapping smaller for bigger occasionally. If I've striped my two smallest disks onto my large one, how do I pull out one to replace it with Tomorrow's Big Guy? Maybe I leave the 4T alone and at most only stripe the smaller into 1T of "secondary" space; then I simply have to buy the next disk as bigger than my smallest chunk rather than bigger than my current total. Hmmm... What are your thoughts on software RAID in general, especially regarding striping & mirroring (which would definitely require RAID to recover) vs mirroring alone (which should allow me to just use the disk in any ol' system without RAID involved if I had to), and can you recommend any primers or HOWTOs for the nervous guy? :-) TIA & HAND :-D -- David T-G See http://justpickone.org/davidtg/email/ See http://justpickone.org/davidtg/tofu.txt

[opensuse] openSUSE 13.1 RC1 first impressions and a few issues

I am sending this to the opensuse ML since 13.1 is now RC1 and no longer assoc with Factory. I have very recently tried out openSUSE 13.1 RC1 KDE Live on a Dell OptiPlex 760 with a Radeon HD 3450 (ATI RV620LE) display and two 1280x1024 LCD monitors. I copied the ISO image to a subdirectory on a USB flash memory device and set up booting using GRUB2. Once I figured out the magic incantations for booting from an ISO file (they changed from 12.3), The system booted find and KDE came up on both monitors. I found configuring the system to my liking to be very intuitive and well self-documented and was rather easily get things close to the way I like them. Performance has been snappy and most of the things I've tried out have worked rather smoothly. However, I've encountered a few hurdles and issues that I'd like to report here: 1. There was a Kiwi change that necessitated me splitting the "isofrom=" directive to two directives, "isofrom_device=" and "isofrom_system=" (which makes sense). I was not able to find any documentation on this in the usual places. However, I found enough info in the Kiwi logs to be able to make the change. 2. I can make Kwin crash on demand quite easily. There are several, consistently reproducible cases: - Drag an application window from one monitor to the other. Generally at the time the mouse pointer crosses to the other monitor, kwin crashes. Sometimes it crashes shortly after. If I move the app window half way across, wait a bit, then grab the window from the other side and move it the rest of the way across, I can avoid the crash ... usually. - Open the desktop Pager Settings dialog box, click on the "Virtual Desktops" icon on the Left side, select the "Switching" tab, and set a keyboard shortcut to something that conflicts with an already set shortcut. Kwin will crash when "Apply" is clicked. After kwin is restarted, the dialog WRT the conflict then shows up. In either case, the crash reporter is not able to make a usable stack backtrace, most likely because this is a live instance and so it is not possible to add the packages necessary to generate the backtrace. 3. When I attempted to play a video on youtube using Firefox, I was presented with only the lowest resolution as a choice whereas with the openSUSE 12.3 GM KDE Live image I was able to select any of the available resolutions (including HD) for the same videos. This is all I can remember offhand. [opensuse] Realcrypt issue

I just installed and tried to run Realcrypt under OpenSuSE 12.3 x64 and ran into a hiccup. When I tried to mount an encrypted volume I got the following error - "Failed to set up a loop device" Searching around the internet I found what may be a partial solution and that was to execute the following command - modprobe loop and indeed that seems to have gotten Realcrypt working for me. Not that I have any idea what I am doing, I am NOT an expert on the Linux kernel by any means.. So my questions are these - Did this make a permanent change to my system and if so good or bad? My internet searching found references to making a change in a file called rc.conf but I cannot find this particular file. Where should I look for it? If this loop kernel module is required by Realcrypt, why didn't YaST load if for me when I selected Realcrypt for installation? Seems like I shouldn't have to go and hunt this solution down like this. [opensuse] Howto keep track....

...on changed or new files on HTTP/HTML only servers. I like to track some directories to see if there are new source tarballs added and subsequently download them automatically. I can do that with FTP sites using my own scripts, but processing HTML pages is different for every page/site and would require custom processing for each different page and directory. I know it is hard to do while using linux basic tools (lynx, curl, wget) and bash scripting, but if someone has a pointer, then please let me know. By the way, they say that perl and LWP might do, but I do a lot of programming in various languages but not with perl or python.
