[opensuse] Is Xsane exporting incorrect PDF?

I'm attempting to edit a scanned into PDF format and open it in LibreOffice but keep getting an error "General Input/Output Error". I have opened other PDF documents and been able to edit them (some required password). LibreOffice 3.5.4.2 Xsane 0.998 openSuSE 12.2-M3 KDE 4.8.1 Scanner: Brother MFC-J6710DW via wired network I've looked in /var/logs but been unable to find anything related. I have been able to work around this problem by opening the PDF in Inkscape and using a text overlay but that isn't a very nice solution. Does anyone have a comment or suggestion of how to get this PDF into a usable format? Is this a known problem with Xsane's exporting? So far I haven't been able to find it with Google. [opensuse] plasma desktop crashes

I have an openSUSE 11.2 system running KDE 4.6. For one user, the plasma desktop crashes when they log in, resulting in a useless desktop. A new user works fine. So, I thought it would be useful to delete /tmp/kde-user* /var/tmp/kdecache-user* Nope. That did not solve it. What else might make plasma desktop fail for a single user? [opensuse] Strange behavior of external disk with encrypted and clear partitions

Recently I've decided to replace ReiserFS partition with new one, encrypted. I did it using Yast partitioner (in oS12.1). Now I experience the following strange behavior: When I connect this disk when oS12.1 (64 bits) is running, non-encrypted partition is auto-mounted, as expected, and encrypted one is not. Now, I just want to copy some file to non-encrypted NTFS partition. Surprisingly the copying is terribly slow (estimated time for 500 MB file is 4 hours). I have oS 11.4 (32 bits) on the same computer I have not defined encrypted mount there. I reboot to 11.4, connect the same disk and voilà - the copy takes less then minute. if I unlock encrypted partition using Yast partitioner in 12.1 the copying is still crawling. I do not see any messages in system log at that time. Any advice how to debug it? What can slow down the write access (my impression is that reading is still OK, though I only transferred small files, so I can't say for sure)? [opensuse] How to click and run a Java class

Hi everyone I have a java program which I'd like to just click and run. The class is called DataEntry It is in /usr/local/bin/DataEntry/DataEntry.class This gets us there: #!/bin/bash cd /usr/local/bin/DataEntry java DataEntry I have chmod +x'd it. Unfortunately it then opens a new window giving more options: Execute, Execute in Terminal, Open, Cancel How do I just click and run without the options popup? Howdy All, I recall that when I first installed Opensuse 12.1 x86_64 my usb 3.0 controller and external HD were correctly detected. However, during one of my updates things broke and the xternal drive is just not detected anymore. The controller is ASmedia chipset based: 06:00.0 USB Controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. My current kernel is 3.1.10-1.9 I also tried the 12.2 beta which uses kernel 3.4.x and that did not work either but the error was different. Any ideas what I may try? Bash gurus, Here is one I don't understand. I needed a simple script to part gtkrc and convert the r,g,b (0.0-1.0) values to (0-255). So I decided to use 'calc' to get the floating point values. Once you have more than two installed operating systems, the complexity and possibilities multiply exponentially. There can be no "right" answer to how to manage booting in these cases. The best that can be done is for someone with experience to take a particular scenario that someone isn't too happy with and suggest how to improve it. So, lets address most questions after having a scenario presented to work with, providing context, along with at least one specific goal beyond "make it better". To provide context (scenario), annotated output from fdisk -l, or something similar, to show what is where now needs to be provided. The tool I use for partitioning (including cloning, copying and moving partitions, among other things), DFSee, can make annotation easy, as it automatically creates a chart with such information in its text log file. An example: http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Dfsee/gx280L02.txt . DFSee is shareware, has native executables for 5 different operating systems (e.g. fits and runs from floppy boot if necessary), and is useable for 30 day period for free. Note that its log indicates where Grub is installed. You may wish to give it a try if for no other reason than providing this contextual information. http://www.dfsee.com/ If you do this, either upload it (e.g. to http://susepaste.org/) and provide a link, or make it an attachment, to prevent line wrapping. Some of the following address van Nidek's questions: 1-systems with NTLDR can be set up to effectively "chainload" Linux. The nice thing about using this feature is that Windows will never make it necessary to fix a Grub that Windows broke. The worst it will ever do if you're unlucky is write a new boot.ini file that excludes your non-Windows menu entries, making Linux temporarily unreachable. This is easily fixed by booting Windows and restoring a backup of boot.ini, or editing the new boot.ini. 2-AiR-Boot is a freeware boot manager with a lot of power. eComStation (eCS) now uses it instead of Grub or the IBM Boot Manager. I don't use it myself, but a lot of multibooters swear by it. http://sourceforge.net/projects/air-boot/ 3-On my multiboot systems that have OS/2 (eCS) installed, IBM Boot Manager is installed. It is easily set to add each Windows or Linux installation to its boot menu, if you're using eCS/OS2's LVM tool, or DFSee. 4-Neither Grub Legacy nor Grub 2 can be managed by more than one OS. Grub Legacy is rather easy to manage by yourself with no interference from any OS. I recommend Grub Legacy for users who don't need HDs larger than 2T or EFI boot, and even for certain RAID and LVM users. It's relative simplicity makes it reliable, as long as its limitations are understood. 5-Installing Windows® After Something Else: http://fm.no-ip.com/PC/install-doz-after.html 6-Disk Partitions, OS/2, & Multiboot FAQ: http://fm.no-ip.com/PC/partitioningindex.html 7-Grub 2 is immensely more complicated and powerful than Grub Legacy. I don't use it, because I don't need anything it can do that isn't more easily done without it. Last I checked, it _still_ hadn't left beta, even though its been in development something like 6 or more years. Several of its basics are changed from Grub Legacy, making it difficult for those versed in Grub Legacy to transition from. That difficulty is compounded by the beta status making it a moving target. It can be difficult to find necessary docs to match the version you're attempting to use. And, its devs insist it needs to be located on the MBR, even though as with Grub Legacy it is possible to put on any supported partition. Have a lot of fun! And, trim your quotes down to only what you're replying to!
