[opensuse] Search on the web

Inspired with: * advices "google that", "ask Google", "search" in our communication media * importance that search has to find information, * abundance of quality and bad information sources, which makes easy to find answer or fall in a trap, I decided to initiate creation of article about that topic. I can't do all that by myself, so it is called "creation". Initial location is: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Search_the_web and later if and when content on that page justifies broader approach it can be moved to a new title [1]. The main purpose it to help experienced users recognize what new openSUSE users don't and can't know, and vice versa. [1] Note that in our wiki title is part of URL, so it must satisfy basic rules for article title (short and still descriptive) and good URL (easy to guess and persistent; no changes after creation without link to new location). PS. Much of the stuff related to gtk is installed allready (libgtk-2 and libgtk-3, everything suse found with gtk in the search box), but I still get the symbol lookup error: ("./gib: undefined symbol: gdk_display") I try to find an installable gtk-1.2.0, but this needs lots of old libraries: glib is needed by gtk-1.2.10-1084.3.x86_64 gtk-lang = 1.2.10 is needed by gtk-1.2.10-1084.3.x86_64 libglib-1.2.so.0()(64bit) is needed by gtk-1.2.10-1084.3.x86_64 libgmodule-1.2.so.0()(64bit) is needed by gtk-1.2.10-1084.3.x86_64 Quite hard to install old libs, but then again: I really want to get this program (gib) installed. [opensuse] 11.4 & LibreOffice 3.4.4.3 stable Broken Dependencies

Hi ! I'm trying to install latest stable LibreOffice 3.4.4.3 from official repository on 11.4. libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.14) libstdc++.so.6 (GLIBCXX_3.4.15) I have included 2 additional repositories - gcc and c/c++ libs, doesn't seem to help, LibO compiled with newer vesrions of these libs. Anyone knows where to find missing libs? Yes, there is no active developer to take care of them. I have however been using since yast lilo config since it was deprecated (which I think is the correct expression). It has bugs (lack of updates rather), sure. [opensuse] Firefox uses Kmail

On my 12.1 system, I have Thunderbird configured to be the default email program. However, for some reason, Firefox wants to use Kmail, when I click on an email link. I do not see any setting in Firefox that would control this and don't know why it's not using the default Thunderbird. [opensuse] No mails after kmail2 migration

Hi, after installing 12.1 I tried to start kmail for three users. In all three cases migration failed immediately. I was then able to run the kmail-migrator tool by hand and my accounts and folder structure got migrated. However all folders are empty. Kmail2 does not show any mails after migration. How can this be fixed? I still see the mails in my $HOME/Mail directory. Kmail just is not able to read them. What to do? [opensuse] Problem with Hibernate on opensuse 11.4

When I shutdown for the night using hibernate I get some problems. The first time I shutdown after a full startup everything seems OK. It starts the next time OK. Then the second night it will stall Hibernating. The screen gets not update it just goes black and stalls. I have to do the power switch to stop it. Has anyone else had this problem? I did find one message using google which indicated a similar with dual boot. I only have Opensuse on this system. [opensuse] Why no IPv6 link local address?

My firewall is an old computer running openSUSE 11.3 and I have IPv6 running on it. However, the NIC facing my cable modem does not show an IPv6 link local address, which every NIC is supposed to have, if IPv6 is enabled. The NIC facing my LAN has both link local and public unicast addresses. I had considered that something in my cable modem might be inhibiting it, but when I plug my notebook computer directly into the modem, it has a link local address. I tried booting from a live 12.1 CD and had link local addresses on both LAN & WAN interfaces, so there's something in openSUSE 11.3, as installed, that's disabling it. I tried turning off the firewall, but that also didn't make any difference. [opensuse] running a virtualbox vm with network adapter host in 12.1

Hello, I just updated a 11.2 server to 12.1. I had a running VM and as far as I remember I used it with host only networking (access to it is done by SuSEfirewall2). I can't anymore. I use it as user "virtual". When I try to launch it I just have an error message "VBoxHeadless -startvm s-r Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.1.4_OSE (C) 2008-2011 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. Error: failed to start machine. [opensuse] Recompile kernel to get parallel port working?

My parallel port on the motherboard is broken. Have tried with an USB- Parallel adapter but without success. Just bought me a PCi serial parallel card and hoped to have instant access with my printer. No success. dmesg only finds "ppdev: user-space parallel port driver" No idea what that means. It seems that the card is recognized. Under Yast, Hardware information I found: simple communications controler, Name EF232PCI Parallel& Dual Serial. Looking into the driver disc I am surprised to find there instructions in order to patch linux kernels. In the readme I find, "Linux driver for ITE887X serial and parport. This driver only for Linux kernel 2.4.19 or 2.4.20." They give specific instructions for Mandrake and Redhat and for other Linux they point to the Kernel Howto. This situation is an absolute first for me. Up to now the pci cards where automatically detected. [opensuse] running a script at end of boot with systemd

Hi All, The host system is openSUSE 11.4 x86_64 GNOME, all updates I want the Virtualbox VM that I've created (it's name is "lampbox") to autosave and autostart gracefully with the host. I've enabled 'vboxes' in YAST2 System Services (Runlevel) to start in run levels 3 and 5 I've confirmed that I am a member of the "vboxusers" group. I created the file /etc/sysconfig/vbox as follows: # Virtual box machines to autostart # Example to start 2 machines # VBOX_AUTOSTART = "MachineName1 MachineName2" VBOX_AUTOSTART="lampbox" As the subject lines says, invoking 'rcvboxes start' yields this error: Starting Virtualbox machines: lampbox (user: ) Virtual machine: lampbox: VBOX_USER not configured I tried adding "VBOX_USER="carl" to /etc/sysconfig/vbox and no change What am I missing? [opensuse] Error after updating libGLEW (for Clementine)

Hi List-members, I installed Clementine from the openSUSE multimedia repository, which forced me to install libGLEW1_7 as dependency requirement, then Clementine was usable and perfectly working for awhile until I received a warning by zypper about newer libGLEW1_7, which I provided to install. After such update however Clementine stopped to work and by trying to launch it through the command-line I seen an error on a reference which seems a translation error of a particular statement in the code (my system language is Italian). The newer libGLEW package which contains the broken files/statement is: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games/openSUSE_12.1/x86_64/libGLE… Thus I revert back to older Clementine version which uses libGLEW1_6. [opensuse] Downwards scrolling terminal?

Hei, a long time ago I had a terminal for X that was scrolling downwards instead of upwards. I don't actually remember if I knitted this myself somehow or if I got it from somewhere. [opensuse] 12.1 - konversation - no communication with IRC server after initial connection

Hi all, I lately upgraded from 11.4 to 12.1. The upgrad was a reinstall but I kept the homedirs (NFS share). Now I can't chat on freenode, opensuse and flightgear IRC servers anymore. The connection is established, I see the typical disclaimers, etc. etc. etc. and then, when I type e.g. /join #opensuse, nothing happens. After a while, konversation shows "no answer from server since ... seconds". There is no error message or any hint. Now, interesting enough, connection to Shadowfire work without problems. [opensuse] Follow-up question re nvidia/nouveau in initrd (was "Poor 12.1 Performance")

Guys, In regard to our earlier discussion re the kernel modules nouveau and/or nvidia being inside the initrd: In my 3.0.3-1-desktop initrd on 11.4, there are no video modules under /lib/modules . . . /drivers - the /gpu/drm directory is not there (where nouveau.ko is located) nor is the /video/nvidia directory (where nvidia.ko is located). I also see in dmesg that the nvidia module is loaded far down after root has been mounted and other hw modules & drivers are being loaded, just before mounting the additional file systems. So it would appear then that the boot parameter in ref to nouveau that is passed to the kernel by grub is for later use, again not having anything to do with what is in the initrd. And that the nvidia modules is being loaded somewhere during init while nouveau is in the kernel and automatically loaded unless blacklisted? (There are modprobe.d files in the initrd, but not the one blacklisting nouveau.)
