[opensuse] vpn in opensuse 11.4 (cisco vpnclient and Corrupted MAC on input)

Hello: I would like to change my system from openSUSE 11.2 to 11.4. But there are a few programs which should work, one of these is vpn. It seems I can not make vpn work in 11.4 I tried vpnc which can connect but requires root password at every connection which is not an option for me. It also disconnects automatically in very short time. In previous SUSE versions I used cisco's vpnclient that worked flawlessly in 10.x and more or less in 11.2 (Applying patch from tuxx-home.at, changing dhcpcd to dhclient and using 2.6.37 kernel.) In 11.4 I also could build vpnclient after patching, and I can run vpnclient too and make the vpn tunnel. If dhcpcd is enabled, however, there is no traffic through the tunnel. kinternet's check connection says: name server: waiting for reply. If I replace dhcpcd with dhclient the name server is found, I can use ssh or sftp, but transferring files with sftp result in the following message: 06:21 ETA Corrupted MAC on input. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt Connection closed Does anyone have any idea on how I could troubleshoot this or make a working vpn connection is 11.4? I have the default 11.4 packages and kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop. [opensuse] Akonadi in newly installed Kontact (KDE4.6)

I imported my address book as an LDIF file, and configured the Personal Contacts resource, choosing the Akonadi option as standard (although I can't find now where I made that choice). I accepted the default resource location as ~/.local/share/contacts. The addressbook now works, and is accessible from kmail, so I should be happy. I am not, because several facts confuse me, and I don't understand why it works at all. 1) There is nothing in directory ~/.local/share/contacts other than a file called "WARNING_README.txt". 2) The file ~/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf is empty. The Akonadi Confiuration shows that the Akonadi server is running, and the test button shows that all is well. Where is the resource? Why does the addressbook work? The KDE Userbase says that there should be an Akonadi icon in the System Tray, but there isn't, even when I Show Hidden Icons. [opensuse] WordPress thumbnails not working ??

Hi all, I'm trying to work up a web site using WordPress, e-Commerce, PHP, mysql, and SuSE 11.4. When I try to add or edit a product listing I can not add an image. I click on the upload image button and nothing happens. I've added more memory to PHP, from 128 to 500 and installed the PHP-GD. But nothing seems to help. Any ideas? Thanks! [opensuse] ATI open source drivers and HDMI

I'm working on (remote support) an older computer with an on-board ATI 1250 video card. The system is currently running on openSUSE11.1 because this was the last openSUSE release that supported the ATI proprietary drivers. The owner wants to update this machine to openSUSE11.4 but... one requirement, that HDMI works. I've poked around and not really found anything yet that tells me one way or another if HDMI will work with the default Radeon driver. Does anyone here have any experience with using HDMI and the open source drivers? I'd just experiment myself if I could but the computer is almost 9000km away from me... not close enough for me to tinker. All you need is cups and avahi-daemon and a printer definition in /etc/avahi/services and it works flawlessly. I keep getting a popup asking for root password. Its title is "System policies prevent you from setting the brightness level." It appeared after an update of KDE4.7, not the first 'zypper up' of that repository, but one this last weekend. I enter the root password, it goes away, then comes back about half an hour later. I realise I _could_ edit system policies, but I'm wondering WHY I'm getting this? I don't recall setting anything in systemsetting that could account for it. I don't need to, want to and never have set brightness level. [opensuse] encfs screw up

All, I have a directory tree I protect with encfs. It is normally managed by a script and holds backups. Doing some backup / restore admin, I make a mistake at the command line. I don't know what I did, but now I can't mount the tree (via encfs). I suspect I somehow changed the password. I know the data is encrypted, but there is no way the data was re-encrypted with a new key because whatever I did lasted just a fraction of a second. Is there anyway to restore my old password? [opensuse] Reboot via SSH

I ssh'd into my home system as root without any problems. But when I give the command to reboot, nothing happens.. "shutdown -r now" also just gives a response saying the system is going down, but again it does not actually reboot! Can anyone tell me why and how to reboot a system remotely? I tried via VNC also, no joy... Within each activity i'd have an instance of kontact/kmail configured for the correct email addresses/contacts etc so it was just a matter of changing activity instead of logging in and out a few times. [opensuse] libjpeg and libjpeg-turbo

I am looking at libjpeg on openSUSE 11.4. There is a variation of the good old libjpeg which is called libjpeg-turbo. It enables some intel processor instructions to supposedly speed up encoding and decoding byu a factor of 2x - 4x. I see that I have libjpeg-turbo installed. The odd thing is that the RPM does not actually contain a libjpeg. It is only the wrapper programs like cjpeg. These programs just seem to use the regular /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62 that comes with the usual libjpeg rpm. So, what is libjpeg-turbo really installing? Surely the turbo improvements must be in the library itself. If the standard libjpeg.so.62 is compiled with these extensions, what could a turbo cjpeg add? [opensuse] iPad and mail

Hi, One of my users wants to read and write emails with his iPad. Receiving them is no problem, setup is a fairly standard dovecot imap-server with ssl. Sending gives problems though. I set up my server (postfix) to accept smtp via port 25, which works, but only locally as most providers here block outgoing port 25. I also set up my server to accept smtp with starttls on port 587 (submission). Unfortunately, the iPad seems not capable of sending via port 587 with starttls. I didn't see this myself, tomorrow I'll be able to have look. I googled but I didn't find something. I know my server works because Thunderbird works for several users (even the laptop of the iPad-user). This mail is sent that way. Any thoughts ? TIA. Lars, that's hard to tell. If I would be sure that they are generic, I would have filed bugs already. Almost all of them revolve around our usage of autofs. Besides specific usages like "apache document root on automount NFS", perhaps the most generic usage is home dirs via automount. There, some systems, e.g. postfix, need to wait for autofs to be able to process user files like .procmailrc or .forward properly. If the soft dependency to autofs is not there, they will reject emails to those users during startup. Another generic issue might be that ypbind doesn't wait for ypserv. But then, I know that usage of NFS home dirs and NIS (on some legacy sub-networks of big clients, FWIW) is not exactly the target group of openSUSE. Thus, we don't bother with bug messages and establich patching the issues as part of the deployment process. (Frankly: I'm the CEO/CTO of a small technical company. (E.g., for the last two weeks, I have been the sole CTAN admin not on holidays. Since I don't want to catch flames for this comment, let me emphasize that I don't have problems with the systemd development process. If my customers don't like the direction that's going, we can fix that ourselves, just as we do since decades. In my company, we do data center planning & support as part of our business, and I see *much* more non-standard environments as I would like -- and as is sensible, to be frank. Well, it will be *very* interesting to see how this will pin out; if the my-laptop-is-all-the-world-centric developer crowd will have to face a backslash from the servers-are-all-the-world admin crowd or if they will push their changes through. (Personally, I think that both are wrong.) Currently, it seems to be constructive, witness Frederic and Wolfgang on the sendmail startup definition. I didn't even know that there are systemd generators. ;-) So, I have great hopes for that direction. Hi I've finally thought of a reason to use Activities but I'm sot sure if its going to work. Can i have a separate instance of kontact/kmail2 in each activity serving different email accounts? And separate instances of other apps like browsers? Think to remember that in its original state this shortcut gave an option to accept or to cancel the action. I exported last time all emails from my Suse folder to the trash and it took very long to get it all back. I have a user reporting that when they format xfs disks under openSUSE 11.2, they cannot use them on openSUSE 10.3. Could there be some default in 11.2 that is not compatible with whatever the defaults were in 10.3? I am trying to get more details and to see if this can be recreated locally. Any other xfs users out there who move disks between openSUSE releases? [opensuse] PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/extensions/intl.so'

hello there ;-) few days ago i installed the newest opensuse 11.4 32bit system and all is working really fine. except when starting apache or doing a php -v on the CLI i receive the following error -> php -v PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/extensions/intl.so' - /usr/lib/php5/extensions/intl.so: undefined symbol: grapheme_extract_count_iter in Unknown on line 0 i know this bug has been reported earlier and i found quite a few results in google. i even found one result where the problem was fixed and updated in an additional opensuse repository -> http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#Apache_PHP_modules the repository with the fix is the following -> http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/php/openSUSE_11.4/ so ... i added this repository via YAST to the repositories in my system without any problems but whenever i do a system update via YAST i don't receive new fixes and patches from the newly added repository! if i directly browse to the /i586 folder in the repository i see all the PHP updates with version 5.3.6 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/php/openSUSE_11.4/i586/ but my system still has PHP version 5.3.5 installed and somehow doesn't want to update from the newly added repository for the apache php modules so ... i just double checked and the repository is enabled in YAST ... but I still don't receive updates from there ;-) well ... what am i missing? what am i doing wrong? i really would like to update to the new apache php modules, to get rid of that php '/usr/lib/php5/extensions/intl.so' warning, but somehow that doesn't seem to work ;-( any help or hint would be highly appreciated!!! thanks a million & all the best regards becki -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

The whole discussion about reboot, init 6, and shutdown -r now notwithstanding (they all do the same actions anyhow), I'd like to note that this "should" work; I do it regularly. Either your problem is caused by software; then /var/log/messages or /var/log/boot.msg (boot.omsg after reboot) should contain hints. It might also be a different issue: I have one workstation (an Dell Optiplex 990) where reboot doesn't work at all. Neither remote nor on console. Linux terminates all process, unmounts all disks, and then nothing happens. (That's one of the drawbacks of top postings... ;-) If it's a remark for Marc, you make a very important point. Marc should set RUN_PARALLEL to "no" in /etc/sysconfig/boot. Many problems during boot or shutdown are cured by that; dependency information in init.d scripts is lacking for many situations. [opensuse] How to add a descriptive icon to Scribus

Thanks in advanced. I did installed Scribus from YaST2 (GUI) in KDE 4.6.00 (KR46SC, KDE-Extra repo activated) system. Scribus is running fine and it has been put correctly in App Launcher too. The minor issue it does not show the Scribus Icon. AFAIK, it is supposed to be installed by default ( with no user intervention) but it did not happen that way. So now I need to install the icon manually. Can anyone give me some suggestion to complete this task? After typing in my password, I get Module is unknown. This is happening ONLY on text terminals (not the graphical login) I did a forced update of login and also the PAM modules, but the problem still persists. Anyone have any ideas? [opensuse] Add KDE activity programatically?

I have been looking for information on this but do not see it. Is it possible to set up (install new) activities when installing software. For example, in out software suite, it could be interesting to have a calibration activity, a diagnostics activity, a measurement activity, and an analysis activity. These never occur at the same time, use different tools, an could perhaps benefit from desktop streamlining when that activity is active. This will probably never happen if we need to set these up by hand. If, however, we could (1) detect if the activity is already defined so we do not muck up an already installed activity, and (2) install an activity that does not exist, we could then justify investigating the use of activities in our systems. Any pointers are welcome. I had a strange experience last night - libreoffice won't open files. That is File/Open doesn't bring up a dialog box. File/New works and so does using a filename on the command line when starting libreoffice. Does anybody know what this might be? It's on 11.3, standard repository. I installed a system update the day before but I don't remember whether there was anything for libreoffice. Anyone having an issue recently (~last week..) where the kmix widget in the task bar in kde (V4.6.00) locks up - can't change volume with multimedia keys, or mute etc. Think there may have been a recent update...? After the exchange of my hd0 hard-disk I had to remove manually the existence of the old drive. I remember that I used midnight commander to find all places that mentioned the old drive. The new drive is working properly but at boot or in case I install the latest kernel I get the message: Perl-Bootloader: 2011-08-05 17:38:09 ERROR: GRUB::GrubDev2UnixDev: did not find a match for hd0 in the device map Is there an automatic method to get rid of this message? [opensuse] Does YAST's failure to mount Vista/W7 shares 'ro' by default cause problems with BCD on dual-boot boxes?

All, I have a dual-boot box with 11.4/vista where vista seems to lose the ability to boot regularly (I know its' vista... but read on). Part of the issue seems to center around the way vista and w7 BCD bootmgr use disk signatures as validation of the boot environment during startup. I suspect any change to disk content between windows boots results in boot failure. The vista fail to boot happens regularly requiring the familiar dvd boot and repair. Looking at the fstab defaults for the normal opensuse /windows/C mount point, I was surprised to find that the partition is NOT mounted ro by default. The default fstab entry is: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0_WD-WX40A9996688-part2 /windows/C ntfs-3g users,gid=users,fmask=133,dmask=022,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0 I don't know. Maybe the ntfs-3g mount type includes a default 'ro' option, but I've changed the mount to explicitly include ro: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0_WD-WX40A9996688-part2 /windows/C ntfs-3g users,gid=users,fmask=133,dmask=022,locale=en_US.UTF-8,ro 0 0 Could failing to explicitly mount the ntfs-3g share ro cause changes that impact the disk signature of the vista/w7 BCD bootmgr that render windows unable to boot? I don't know. That's why I'm putting this out to the folks that know more about the mount defaults to think about. If it is possible, then the simple inclusion of an explicit 'ro' option mounting windows shares may be warranted. I don't know if it will fix it, or make a difference, but something is causing win boot problems on dual-boot boxes with the windows BCD and bootmgr. What say the experts? -- David C. When I installed v11.4/KDE on this system some weeks ago, its background was a tannish grey with a kind of grey horizontal barberpole effect, as I remember, with black lettering. I do not remember setting a specific color, and I am unable to find a setting in Configure Desktop/Personal Settings (formerly System Settings). Some days afterward, I noticed that the background has become a dark grey (still with black characters), so that reading te lettering was very difficult or impossible; only the presence of icons makes this panel useful. I have no idea what caused the change. Nothing else on the desktop has a black background. A few days later, the colors returned to their original state, but another few days later became black again. You can see what this looks like at <ftp.hashkedim.com/pub/panel1.png>. I have a second panel at the top of the screen which is, if anything, in worse condition: most of the vertical height of the "barbarpole is overlaid with a black strip, so that panel has become totally useless. For some reason I lost the window frames in Xfce and now all windows appear on a single workspace. Mouse works, but not the keyboard. It reminds me of the old problem that used to happen in Compiz. HI When trying to post an email to this mailing list via kmail2 "Message/Mailing List/Post new message" kmail2 launches my browser to compose/send the email instead of kmail2? Does anyone know if this is a config option? Right clicking on the mailing list folder doesn't give you a "post to mailing list" option like kmail1. For the record: The Flash plugin was not working in Firefox in both my desktop (64b) and laptop (32b), but it was working fine in Chromium. I finally had time to troubleshoot it and I saw in about:plugins that I had 2 Shockwave Flash plugins installed. One was 9.something and the other the current 10.3 r181. The culprit was the package 'swfdec-mozilla' which I had installed in addition to 'flash-player' and 'flash-player-kde4'. After deleting 'swfdec-mozilla' and 'swfdec', Flash now works fine in Firefox. -- Carlos F Lange -- Recursive: Adj. Howdy all, I am working with a minority language group (a spoken language, not a programming language :) ) which does not have language support of any kind in any platform. However, for the script we are using, all I need to be able to do is put 1 of 3 characters over the vowels - a right accent (don't know how to insert, as here it only goes straight down like this ' but I want it to go to the right), a grave accent `, and a carat ^. Here are some examples I have cut and pasted from old data I typed in using microsoft office: binoó - means piled tùpa - means to share equally lugtâ - means dirt or land When I used windows, I installed the english international keyboard in the operating system, as this has those 3 characters. However, since I am trying to migrate over to suse linux, how can I do something comparable? All I need to do is to be able to use the keyboard to enter the characters without having to take a mouse and clicking on an insert special character function when I type out data in a word processor like libre office, or when I enter text in a cell in a spreadsheet or database. Also, gstreamer is never updated as far as I can remember, and amarok and kaffeine both have missing plugins. vlc almost always works, and when it doesn't, mplayer does, but neither of them is the default for any multimedia file, and I haven't taken the trouble to learn how change the defaults. But I was wondering if some of these non-updates were part of the problem, and if I needed to do something. Now I have a bootable kernel I have worked though matters with 11.4 All the personal config came though intact :-) A lot of the system config has been altered and I'm not sure if that is just 11.3/11.4 differences or what. Please fix your file. 3. Latency on menubar Just about every application, thunderbird & firefox in particular, but all the KDE applications as well, have a delay when top menubar items are clicked. I am used to this on LiveCD where the system has to drag in the relevant stuff from the CD but not on a real system. The KDE applications seem to cache items, the GTK applications don't seem to. 4. No sound. Sound has stopped working. Testing with LiveCD tells me its not a hardware problem The mixer icon doesn't appear in the system tray on starting KDE4 and when it is started everything is set to zero. Even then sound isn't working. [opensuse] kmail2, moving to a new fresh install on a second user

Due to the problems I have with kmail2 I want to make a new user and install there a new kmail. I want to export the kmail contents and import them in the new user. How to export or archive them? According to the kmail handbook there should be an "archive" possibility. There is a "save as" choice and I used it on one folder. But there is no choice and only a lot of activity which I have canceled in order to find out on the list if that is normal and what and where it is saved and in which format. I want 34 folders to move to the new user. Is that to be done folder by folder? Problems I have with my kmail2 are among others, sending email via has no choices (could have used Message in the toolbar) so yesterday it just send emails to the list from the account which is dedicated as default. The regular asked question which of two emails are to be kept, the right, left or both. Do not see differences. [opensuse] New SANE for Canon 9000F

Hi all, I got the source for the Canon 9000F scanner from Gernot Hassenpflug to try on my new scanner. I got the backend compiled on openSUSE 11.4 /64, and working with Xsane and gimp. It scans up to 2400 at the moment, and with adjustments also 4800. I still get some errors with higher resolutions, but it is workabel for normal use at the moment. Gernot is working on the Same project, and will complete this driver perhaps before the end of the year. I used his "compiling gutenprint CVS and adding Canon printers" directions from http://aikishugyo.dnsdojo.org/blog/ (It is not always up, therefore I include what he sent me below) Source is available from him over his Blog, or mail me and I can send what he sent me. It is added into /usr/src/sane-backends/backend directory. YaST does see the scanner with the scanner install: Driver: pixma Scanner: CANON Canoscan 9000F at pixma:04A91908 You can test it as well: Test with 'scanimage -d pixma:04A91908 -v' succeeded. The result I got: scanimage: scanning image of size 638x877 pixels at 24 bits/pixel scanimage: acquiring RGB frame scanimage: min/max graylevel value = 37/248 scanimage: read 1678578 bytes in total In XSANE or other scan apps it may not be detected when starting it as a user. I got the Error: Failed to open devive `pixma:04A91908': Invalid argument To check if it works, run as root: # export SANE_DEBUG_PIXMA=11 # xsane Debug scrolls in the terminal while xsane starts up. If starting Xsane as a user, and it produces errors, it is a rights issue. I just gave all rights to all to get it going, but still have to figure out how it should be done correctly. :-) Al HowTo: compiling SANE from source Compiling SANE <http://www.sane-project.org/> from source is necessary whenever some changes are made to backend code. For reference is shown also how to get the latest code. Ensure that git <http://git-scm.com/> is installed, and go to the directory chosen for development, before getting the latest source with the /clone/ command. cd ~/src git clone git://git.debian.org/sane/sane-backends.git <http://git.debian.org/sane/sane-backends.git> To update the existing code, you can use the /pull/ command from the /sane-backends/ directory. Now, the compilation process must begin using the /autoconf/ and /automake/ commands[1]. Problems that arise in these steps must first be solved before continuing. POSIX warnings can be ignored. cd sane-backends autoconf automake Next is the compilation with specified backends. If only one backend is needed, no quote marks are needed. If all backends should be compiled, the BACKENDS variable is not needed. The default installation directory is /usr/local/ so there should be no clash with the installed system SANE. BACKENDS="pixma epson2" ./configure make sudo make install Sometimes /sudo/ will not have the desired permissions, so executing the previous block as root might be necessary for individual users. Note that this should be avoided for production systems. Footnotes [1] According to a SANE mailing list posting, autoconf and automake execution is not needed since the /.in/ files are part of the git repository. However, I consider the commands good for detecting some possible problems early on. SANE uses libusb to talk to USB scanners 2. sane-find-scanner uses libusb to check that libusb can recognize the scanner. It does not use the SANE backends (like pixma backend) to do anything with the scanner. So it is just a check that libusb is working. 3. scanimage uses the SANE backend to talk to the scanner, so this is the real test. But you might need to be root to use it. Or else set up some sane-related conf file. 4. make sure the sane-find-scanner and scanimage used are the ones in /usr/local after compiling SANE. 5. after scanimage as root, you could also try xsane as root. 6. if you can set up your system to work also as non-root with scanimage and xsane, maybe send me (Gernot) the info on what you did so I can help people who ask me later. Certainly not. It was probably removed from that list to encourage people to use the half-baked opensouece driver.
