[opensuse] errors formatting a flash card

openSUSE 11.4 / kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop / Gnome 2.32.1 I have been using SDHC flash cards for data backups, reformatting them as ext4 with LUX encryption. This has worked very nicely with a mixture of cards from various manufacturers, but now I've come across a problem one. The card is a SanDisk 16gb SDHC 'standard version' (their words) that refuses to format as anything other than FAT. It seemed to format OK, but when mounting it fails (with the all too familiar log message of 'JBD: no valid journal superblock found' and 'EXT4-fs (dm-1): error loading journal'). I messed around with it for a while, using both the Yast2 formatter utility (from 11.4) and the Gnome gui utility (Disk Utility 2.32.0), but no joy. Here are a few of the error messages I recorded... ============== Error deleting partition An error occurred while performing an operation on "New Volume" (Partition 1 of Generic- Multi-Card): The operation failed Details Error erasing: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_del_partition: device_file=/dev/sdc, offset=16384 Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=16526606336) MSDOS_MAGIC found looking at part 0 (offset 16384, size 16526589952, type 0x00) new part entry looking at part 1 (offset 0, size 0, type 0x00) new part entry looking at part 2 (offset 0, size 0, type 0x00) new part entry looking at part 3 (offset 0, size 0, type 0x00) new part entry Exiting MS-DOS parser MSDOS partition table detected got it got disk got partition - part->type=8 refusing to delete a metadata partition ==================== The partitioning on disk /dev/sdc is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table. You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sdc as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool. ===================== Error Operation not permitted on disk /dev/sdc ! The partitioning on your disk /dev/sdc is either not readable by the partitioning tool parted used to change the partition table or is not supported by this tool. You may use the partitions on disk /dev/sdc as they are or format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk here. ===================== I have a support inquiry in to SanDisk, but I'm not real hopeful of getting a response real soon. [opensuse] Fans off, not cool!

Hi, I did a zypper dup on my computer the other day and as best I can remember the following were updated: kernel-default kernel-default-devel kernel-devel kernel-source kernel-kmp kernel-firmware Now, the cooling fan on my laptop doesn't work at any temperature. I had been running the latest kernel-3.0 rc from kernel head, now I am back to a 2.6.37 kernel after the update. I have looked in the Kernel:Head repository and don't find the previous release candidate kernel rpms available anymore, it seems they have been erased. [opensuse] Upgrading Firefox

I have two machines, both v11.4, one of them newly installed, both with Firefox 4.0b12. YaST Software Manager says that FF v5.0 is available. Trying to download the newer release causes the Software Manager window to collapse at once, leaving no remark about why it is doing this. Downloading Thunderbird, on the other hand, goes without a hitch. [opensuse] 11.3 Gnome2 window placement FAIL

32b OpenSuSE 11.3, Gnome 2.30 When Gnome is started, it places all previously open windows in the correctly remembered positions on each desktop and just before it's finished starting up, *ALL* the windows fall into the northwest corner of desktop 1. Even if this is acceptable, default behaviour, it is unwanted, undesirable. Is there a way to persuade Gnome to keep all windows where they were placed and not drop them all in the corner? I don't see any config setting that would work, Anyone have a magic spell, curse or threat that does? [opensuse] New v11.4 installation -- odd behaviors

Because my venerable Pentium 4 motherboard died yesterday, I have a new MB (i5 CPU on an Intel HD67BL board) and have installed 64bit v11.4 on it. I am non-plussed by some of the behaviors I observe. I hope someone can help me understand them. 1) But immediately upon booting the installation DVD yesterday, and again when I started up the installed system todday, I was asked to choose a display mode. I was offered a small group of options to pick be entering the number. The one I wanted was listed as: f 35A 1600x1200x32...(I would have chosen 60Hz if it were offered) I tried enterring "f", "35A", and "f 35A", and was rewarded each time with an error message telling me that the entry was not a valid mode. Permitting the system to make up its own mind, the boot proceeded, and I went to Systems Settings to see what it had chosen. It is 1024x768 at 60Hz (no better resolution is offered). Even the ancient Pentium 5 was able to give me the higher resolution, and at the 60Hz refress rate. My conclusion is that there is an setting I must change, but I see nothing suggestive in the BIOS, so I may be overlooking something. [opensuse] Considering a move from SCSI to SATA

Hello We have always used SCSI disks in our data collection systems. The data collection can be quite a bit at a time. 1 MB per second is not unusual. And this is sustained for, perhaps, hours at a time. We originally chose SCSI when the option was IDE. It was a no-brainer. Over time, SATA disks have made great progress. For example, this disk from Western Digital: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/wd6000hlhx-velociraptor-600gb,review-31853-3.… My question is, does anyone have any experience with these disks when writing sustained amounts of data? I am guessing there is some interaction between the disk, the controller, and the Linux device driver in terms of features available. [opensuse] (OT) Copy (going bad) game CD's with ....

I have a game CD, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, that is acting up. It will install but it complains about reading the CD to play the game. It says to put in the "real" CD not a backup. What can copy this - blasted - thing ? Tried k9copy and from the get go, it says "can't read the CD". I do not understand the following behaviors in a newly installed v11.4 system. 1) In System Settings > Common Appearance > Account Settings > Password and User > User Information, I am asked to enter my name, email address, and SMTP server. After doing so, the following error appeares: "An error has occurred, and your name has probably not been changed.The error was chfn." Stan, on your problem #1: what video card are you using? I have had this behaviour on machines where the kernel does not recognise the video card (e.g. Nvidia) correctly and then switches to the vesa/fb driver, offering nothing better than 1024*768. Installing the proper video driver would fix that issue. Mode f 35A sounds weird. The VESA mode for 1600/1200/32 is 322, which is equivalent to Linux's video mode number 834. Have to tried passing the command "vga=834" to the kernel command line upon boot? Unfortunately this may not work even if the kernel does control your video card correctly as this mode is not strictly standardised, and it will not work (i.e. ignored) if the kernel does not recognise your card. Anyway, I would give it a try, and check the kernel's logging output.
