Hi, I am configuring a new openSUSE 11.4 installation and there are some features that are annoying me and I'd like to dispense with them: - "If 'blah-blah-blah' is not a typo you can use command-not-found ..." - "Absolute path to 'ifconfig" is '/sbin/ifconfig', so running it ..." - Tooltips galore How might I get rid of these things? [opensuse] Network Manager / KDE network applet not connecting to unsecured networks

I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with KDE4, using iwl3945 wireless driver. Several times in the last couple of months the NetworkManager refused to connect to unsecured networks. It's not every time - for example, it is fine with my router at home when I put it in insecure mode. But it would refuse to work at critical points when I have no other ways to connect - e.g., in a hotel or at a conference. I can't tell if this is networkmanager or if this is the applet problem. What I see in the applet is that I choose the SSID to connect to, and it pops out a "connect" dialog, but it does not fill in that SSID - instead, it uses an SSID from some other network I used previously. I fix the SSID to the correct thing, but then the connection is not established, with no obvious error messages. Not sure how to debug this, especially given that it happens in places where I usually don't have the time to spend in debugging (like during conferences), nor an alternative connection to google for symptoms. But these are also the exact times when I really need the connection :( It happened to me today, and I am attaching my dmesg & network manager log. Neither shows anything that I can see as problematic that I can see. Is there more that I can do to figure this out? Myrosia

Hi all, Yesterday I recovered from two freezes by Gnome 2.32 on a new OS 11.4 within one hour. I decided to carry on with KDE4. I am not sure how it happened, but I noticed that the bar on top of the menu bar, actually the top part of the frame, disappeared. Some windows cannot be resized by dragging a corner ( I mostly drag the bottom right corner). I can only close windows by the menu - file - Close/Quit, or when there is no menu, only by using F4. How did it happen? Has it to do with desktop settings. Very annoying. Tried InternetSearch with goggle/ixquick, no clear answers found. The other point is, why does Gnome freeze up? I also tried a Gnome 3 installation - it just lost the whole desktop; I first suspected the nVidia, but it worked fine the last 3 years with older openSuSE versions. Got KDE3 running, but Gnome was dead. The Gnome with 11.4 is quite usable for me (matter of taste); similar to the MacBook I use as well. I personally prefer the Gnome 2.32 on 11.4 to KDE4 for its 'simplicity'. [opensuse] CLI Mime-multipart tools

I need to build a mime-multipart file from several files of different types. Is there a command line tool to do this? Gmime documentation that I can find just treats it like a library. [opensuse] Laptop does not fully boot

Hi, My new latop running OS 11.4 does not fully boot anymore. When I add 3 to the Grub boot-line, I see a number of services being started but then the machine hangs hard. The only thing I can do is press the power-button. AFAIK there was no change since the last time I booted it. What did happen was that I could not shut down. I had to press the power button. Maybe related ? Anyway, I would like to have my laptop back, without re-installing. What can I do to recover ? With a recovery CD I disabled the last services I saw starting, but this did not help. I have the impression it stops when starting the video. But it's the same problem when I start in runlevel 3. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is empty (0 bytes). Where could I disable the graphics video ? I have the ATI video drivers installed. They did work for some days though, but to eliminate that I want to use the framebuffer, like just after the installation. Thanks for any help. [opensuse] Mac TimeMachine like backup for Linux?

Hi all, til present I used my own script for backups using DAR. A drawback is that it is rather slow with good compression, and is useless if the last slice is defect. Happened to me twice the last 5 years. On my MacBook I have come to appreciate TimeMachine. I use VirtualBox and openSuSE 11.4 on it as host. Works quite well. Mac OSX 10.6.5 is not as flexable, even with the whole development environment and MacPorts, ok for administering other Linux systems, but my virtual machines are always backed up comfortably by TimeMachine. I would like to make a TiemMachine like backup on my openSuSE Linux Raid 10 server, in development to a data server, onto a USB-2/eSATA 2TB external disk. I have seen there are apps like Backupper and Flyback. Anyone using an app that works with the ease of TimeMachine on linux. A fairly new board with: 1)USB-3 2)SATA III (6G) by AMD® SB850 3)Crossfire-X 4)AMD® 890FX and SB850 chipsets 5)PCI Express 2.0 x16 & PCI Express 2.0 x1 6)RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 (SATA III ) mode by AMD® SB850 7)audio integrated by Realtek® ALC892 Chipset. Are any of these features NOT YET supported by openSUSE 11.4 or 12.1?
