[opensuse] k3b and CDDB lookup question

I'm recording all my albums into mp3s using audacity. To make a long story short, I am using k3b to convert the wavs to mp3s. I am able to retrieve some CDDB info with k3b but many come up empty. k3b is configured to use gnudb.gnudb.org for CDDB lookup. Every single time k3b comes up empty, if I then attempt to use kid3 and point it at gnudb.gnudb.org also, it finds them just fine. Why does k3b come up empty while kid3 doesn't. I'm running SuSE-11.4 and k3b is k3b-2.0.2-6.9.1.i586. Thanks in advance for any pointers. [opensuse] KDE and emacs frame-title-format

Hello, I have set frame-title-format for my emacs like this: (set 'frame-title-format '("%b -- " invocation-name "@" system-name)) This works so far, as it shows me the names of the emacs buffers in the KDE panel. But after a short time, the names in the KDE panel fall back to "emacs(a)my.host.name", omitting the "%b -- " component of the setting. Whenever an emacs frame is re-displayed (either by clicking on the window, or by clicking on the icon in KDE's panel, or by simply switching virtual desktops), the buffer name comes back again. But after a while, it disappears again. The end result is that the buffer name is not displayed most of the time. [opensuse] Double check: /boot on RAID 1

Being one of the folks who tries to do the Subject, I recently ran across an old thread on the list which confirmed most of my experience with it, but mentioned that Yast (in the installer mode) might not be putting grub, etc. on both disks' MBR or /boot. After some web-digging, I tried the following: grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,0) (hd1,0) Can someone competent in the matter confirm for me that the above does indeed mean that both disks in the array have had a working grub written to both disks, and therefore, in the event of the failure of one drive, the other is indeed bootable into a working system? If not, why not and what should I do to "fix" the matter. TIA. [opensuse] 11.4 - who broke apache? Invalid command 'SSLEngine'?

All, Just went to fire up apache on the laptop and got the following: [22:48 alchemy:/home/david] # rcapache2 start Starting httpd2 (prefork) Syntax error on line 48 of /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/vhost-ssl.conf: Invalid command 'SSLEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration The command line was: /usr/sbin/httpd2-prefork -f /etc/apache2/httpd.conf -DSSL failed Hmm... worked find 3 days ago... I haven't had time to dig into it yet, but I thought I would check if anyone else has seen this behavior? I've done package updates, but no config changes, so I'm not sure what's up. -- David C. [opensuse] different types of shell scripts

I downloaded a program that I needed off the internet and the installation program was a script file with the extension .sh. The instructions from the developer said to run the script on a command line by typing the command: ./<filename> I thought (mistakenly) that I could run any shell script by typing the command . <filename> (with a space between the dot and the filename). So I tried to run it that way, and I got the error "cannot execute binary file". However, when I followed the developer's instructions and typed in ./<filename>, the script executed perfectly and installed the program. So my question is, what is the difference between running a script file with the command <dot><space><filename>, for example "#> . myscript.sh" and running it with <dot><slash><filename>, for example "#> ./myscript.sh"? [opensuse] cinelerra on 11.4 won't render though ffmpeg pipe. Work OK with mpeg2enc pipe??

Guys, I'm having problems with cinelerra. I have a simple 8 second sequence of 4 images I need to render. Cinelerra will not render with ffmpeg, but the mpeg2enc pipe works -- what gives? The error I get is something like: int YUVStream:: write_frame(uint8_t**):write_frame() failed:system error (failed read/write) Here is a screenshot of the error (yep, full host.domain info this time :) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/cinelerra/yumstream-write-error… The setting for the render are: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/cinelerra/render-settings.jpg and the setting for ffmpeg are the default DVD: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/cinelerra/ffmpeg-settings.jpg I really don't understand what I'm missing or how I've managed to mess this up. Anybody with cinelerra experience have any ideas? [opensuse] installation error

Started to intall 11.4 on a new laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Installation from DVD downloaded (MDsum checked). After the various choices of partioning and software (accepted defaults for partionning and mostly for software), when installation begins, it stops almost immediately with: failure occurred during following action: creating volume /dev/sd7. System error code was: -1007 sda7 was to be the swap; sda8 root (ext4), and sd9 home (ext4). sda1 is Windows/C; sda2 is Windows/D. I suspect the reason for using 7, 8, and 9 is that this is the third try, and that the first one set up 3,4 and 5. The Windows partition appears to have been correctly shrunk, and Windows will still boot. The installation suggests these three linux partitions be set up (and gives me the chace to alter them), so my guess is that there is space there but unpartitioned. When the error is presented, it asks if I want to go ahead anyway: so far I have said no. Machine specs: Intel mobile i5-241M 2.3Ghz; NVIDIA GT 555M 2GB PCIe; 8 GB DDR-3 1333; motherboard: Intel HM65 Express Chipset Mainboard. Suggestions? Hi .. [opensuse] Notebook/Laptop w/OpenSUSE 11.4 to replace MacBook Pro Lion

Hi all, I need a serious Notebook/Laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4. At the moment I use MacBook with Snow Leopard. I tried Lion, a disaster. OSX is also not as usable as openSUSE for serious System Administration in the IT environment. Apple has excellent hardware! The incompatibilities of it's FS with the more modern ext3/4 FS's is a pain. openSUSE reads OSX's FS without problems, but it is a pain the other way around. I was considering the newest MacBook Pro, but it has limitations if used with openSUSE dual boot with OSX. I use VirtualBox with openSUSE and Win's if needed. There are other manufacturers that has excellent hardware, and work flawlessly with openSUSE. I do not need OSX really, but it comes with a Mac. Other considerations are that most Notebook Companies use manufacturers like FoxConn that has highly questionable work ethics toward it's employees; this was lately exposed by an Apple manufacturing assembly line. The problem is that most source their hardware components from FoxConn, even Dell sold it's Irish plant to them. I read on Toshiba's English Japanese website that they keep the highest ethical practices in human rights, but they 'urge' their supply chain manufacturers to adhere to the same standards. Which companies do keep such standards. Now, who has been occupying the same questions lately. What was your conclusions. Which hardware has the highest compatibility with openSUSE (also maybe RH, Deb, C-OS) and keep to the minimal ethical standards? I was looking at something like the Toshiba X770 range, with dual SSD HD's and Full HD Video. It should have the same or better standard than the MacBook Pro 17". Money is of lesser importance, because it gets written off by the business in three years. It must also be usable for multimedia and CAD type of applications, and have Raid 1 possibility with two SSD's.
