[opensuse] hab falsche partition formatiert, wat nu??

[opensuse] unable to login to KDE under newly installed 11.2

Yesterday I installed 11.2 on my machine, and I don't succeed to login to my useraccount under X. It prompts for the user, and when I enter the name, and subsequently the password, the system goes away for 1 or two seconds after hitting enter, and then comes back with the login screen. When I enter the name again, and thereafter password, the same happens again. No error- message, just comes back like if nothing happened. No error with the password: if I enter a different password, it gives a "wrong password"-message. On a console (under eg. alt-ctl-F2)I can login without a problem. But not under KDE. Can't find a message in /var/log/messages, the only log I can imagine as a place for error-messages. Or does a different log give better indications? Anyone a hint? [opensuse] HP computers?

Hi all, I'm thinking about buying a HP computer (Pavilion P6310de). It comes with Windows 7 and I want to add SuSE to it. Can anyone tell me good or bad things about HP computers? Do they play nice with Linux? [opensuse] sftp-server problem on OpenSUSE 11?

Hi all, I have a few systems here that are OpenSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 machines. For some reason, while SSH into them works just fine SFTP does not work at all. Looks like the SFTP subsystem in the SSH server (/usr/lib64/ssh/sftp-server) never gets activated properly. Has anybody run into this? How do I fix it? Thanks. [opensuse] Compiz - Is 'Zoom Desktop' or 'Enhanced Desktop Zoom' working for you?

Guys/Gals, I'm working with one of the compiz devs (Dmitry), to try and sort out why 'Desktop Zoom' and 'Enhanced Desktop Zoom' plugins died after the last set of updates. The more information I can gather, the better. If you have compiz installed, could you please test whether the zoom is working? (you may need to enable 'Zoom Desktop' or 'Enhanced Desktop Zoom' in compizconfig-settings-manager as it is not enable by default. ([Win]+mouse[4,5] zooms, un-zooms) So far we have confirmed that zoom stopped working on both 11.0 and 11.2 with compiz 8.6 and the factory kde4 desktop installed. I can't say it is related to any one particular update yet, but those are the commonalities so far. Zoom is dead in all desktops (kde3,kde4,gnome) so you can test in any of those. [opensuse] Finding largest MTU an interface supports on openSUSE 11.2

I am trying to set up jumbo frames on an openSUSE 11.2 system. I guess I do that by setting the MTU. When I set this value in YAST, I am uncertain if the value I set is really supported by the underlying device. For example, I have a "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)", using the r8169 driver. I set the MTU to 7200, and it seems to accept this. Is there a command to find the max MTU for any given device? I don't see that in ethtool. But it likes to use jargon, so maybe it is there and I do not recognize it. I can try different settings with ifconfig, waiting until a value fails. Guys, I keep my prompt set so I always have the time and can simply copy/paste the prompt as an rsync or scp or sftp source/destination. example: 21:43 nirvana:~/dt/e17/themes> So if I need to transfer something to/from any host it is just a simple copy & middle-mouse paste for: rsync -uav nirvana:~/dt/e17/themes . One issue that arises is that prompt length grows quickly as you drill down a directory tree, especially if you are su'ed root: eg: [21:55 alchemy:/usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes] # So a solution was to create a small function in .bashrc and short alias to accomplish what I needed. Since in the path statement, '\w' displays the full path while '\W' will display only the current directory, toggling the path required nothing more than re-exporting the path with the 'w' or 'W' set as needed. Does anybody else recall something like a 'beautify path' option that would shorten the path to no more than 3 directory depth displayed starting at the current dir and working back up the tree? As long as we are on prompts, here is another super time-saver that takes you back to the prior directory with a short alias that your fingers are already over: alias cdl='cd $OLDPWD' Next time you change directories and need to change back, just 'cdl' Enjoy :p -- David C. For the last couple of days, I have been unable to send an email from KMail. This has been working fine for months. I'm running OS 11.1. KMail 1.9.10 (Using KDE 3.5.10 "release 21.9" openSUSE). The mail seems to receive OK. Here is the message I receive: ************************************************************* (Big box, named Continue Sending - KMail) Sending failed. The attempt to start sending the message content failed. The server responded: "5.5.0 No recipients have been specified." The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the outbox folder. The following transport protocol was used: Optonline.net Do you want me to continue sending the remaining messages? [Continue Sending] [Abort Sending] ************************************************************* The above even happens when I try to send a message to myself, to be received on this Windows machine. Obviously the server is the same going both ways. I suspect that calling the optonline people wouldn't help-- they seem to know nothing about Linux. (I am only a step or two above that point, myself!) I like KMail.
