I have a GEForce 8400 GS gpu with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers installed. When I attempt to enable Desktop Effects in GNOME, a message inducates the configuration is not supported. Canceling the operation, the CPU and thermal meters in gkrellm jump (60-70% CPU, 60C), but top doesn't show anything unusual other than the gconf daemon using 10-11% CPU. Killing gconfd doesn't stop the rogue process. The only thing that will do this is logging out of the current session. Another thing, from time to time NVIDIA is reverting to a lower res logging into a new session. The highest res available is 1024x768. Usually the range is up to 1280x1024. Again, logging out and logging back in restores the normal settings. Direct rendering is enabled, modprobe doesn't return any errors. Yast/zypper will try and update pieces of madwifi, but not all, so you can end up with mixed versions. Second, there (are/have been) chipset ID errors with atheros AR242x chips and madwifi -> ath5k. Where the chipset lookup in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/modules.alias is wrong. I bugged this several months before 11.0 end of life, but don't know if it was ever fixed. There were going to fix it for newer releases. If there was a kernel change in your 'zypper dup' (presumably there was), you may be facing this problem. If so, try dropping back to an older driver version or using ath_pci instead of ath5k. Good luck. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] 11.0 note - do NOT update zlib - bad things will happen

Guys, Just a note for the few 11.0 boxes left out there. If you are updating your box with some of the newer packages in build service, etc... do NOT update zlib, zlib-32bit and zlib-devel to 1.2.5 from 1.2.3 -- it will break just about everything yast and gtk related (sw_single, firefox, thunderbird, gnome, etc..) If you are bitten by this mistake, just grab the 1.2.3 packages from the install dvd and reinstall with rpm or 'zypper in -f -r <discontinued-oss-repo>'. The install/downgrade of zlib-devel will fail after the downgrade of zlib and zlib-32bit on 64 bit boxes due to the broken link /lib64/libz.so.1 still pointing to 1.2.5. Just fix the broken link so that libz.so.1 is linked to libz.so.1.2.3 again and then install zlib-devel. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hi all, I'm looking for developer documentation on writing a YaST module, but I'm confused by the hits I get when Google:ing for it. I found a lot of links to chorgan.provo.novell.com/yast/doc, but the site is for some reason not available. Is this a temporary problem? Is there a replacement? Failing that, any other good pointers? [opensuse] How to Update ClamAV Database

I installed clamav and clamav-db 0.96 on OSE 11.3 but could not find freshclam. I assumed that the ClamAV folks had perhaps repackaged it in some way but now I see errors in the logs indicating the Clam DB is out of date (!). I have checked my SuSE repositories and do not find freshclam although there are man pages for it and its configuration file. A visit to the clamav.net web site was similarly unfruiful. [opensuse] NetworkManager oS 11.3 - hard lockup using ad-hoc wireless network

Hi all. I have just been trying to set up an ad-hoc wireless network between a couple of WinXP laptops and my oS 11.3/KDE4.5.2 laptop. I can successfully connect to my home wireless network with the 11.3 laptop (using WPA2/PSK encryption) using NetworkManager and the KDE4 NM systray widget, however as soon as I connect to the ad-hoc network (using WEP) the system locks up hard and requires a power down to recover. This happens every time I select the ad- hoc network. It connects, then 10-30 secs later, machine lockup and the only way out is the power button. It doesn't even respond to pings. Is this a known problem with NM? Has anyone else come across this?
