The man format is not the largest problem, but what's there to read. Some man pages are simply horrible, simply straight lists of tech-speak description of options and system variables. Other are pedagogical gems, studded with realistic examples that include "just what I want" kinda stuff. I used OpenBSD for a couple of years. The OpenBSD developers have decided that the man-pages of OpenBSD should be the ultimative source of info about OpenBSD (apart from the source code itself), and they are very good. Some questions cannot possibly, even in theory, be answered by a reference manual, regardless of format. Reference manuals are, after all, reference manuals. For other type of questions, there are HOW-TO:s, FAQ:s etc. As for MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT, it isn't there to see in the man page for man in openSuSE 11.1. Very frustrating. Cheers Johannes S. In Response To: In SuSE 11.1, the behavior of man seems to be "broken" If one wanted all man pages, the manpage for man says to use "man -a", else it gives the first one found. It says nothing about asking a question. How do I turn off the question and have it just show me the first one found again? Is the search order able to be specified? Like I'd prefer it return commands from sections 1 and 8 before API pages. [opensuse] Help get "fish" fixed in kde4, go vote for this bug! (189235)

Listmates, It looks like the kde devs had finally filtered down all of the broken fish bugs to bug number 189235 "fish protocol broken". To help get this bug fixed, go to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189235 and vote for this bug. Of course, I can't tell you how to use your votes, but use the maximum of 20 votes ;-) Seriously, the bugs appear to get fixed based on a priority basis. Part of that decision takes into account the number of votes the bug has. This bug cripples remote administration in kde4 and has been very slow to be fixed by the devs. You votes will help. [opensuse] OOo 2.4 works fine... OOo 3.1 doesn't

Hi all, OpenOffice 2.4 works fine: I can open a Word document containing tables and those are rendered correctly. After an online upgrade, which also upgraded OOo to 3.1, I cannot see the tables anymore... [opensuse] KDE4: colors on system labels

Hi all, Is there a way change colors of the KDE system labels (such as "Reboot", "Shutdown", "Logout") as well as the colors of the elements of the main panel? On this one machine (runs OpenSuSE 11.1 and KDE 4.3) the colors are such that the text in those labels is barely legible. I have looked for suggestions and tips but so far have found nothing. [opensuse] Problems with git in xinetd...

Hello, I had a good working git and git-upd /etc/xinetd.d/ On a fresh install of 11.1 with git xinetd has a git that shows in yast2 xinet configuration. It shows it as being on. When you try to toggle it on or off all it does is give me the message git-core installed. I want to use my git or git-upd file. If I try to enable them they do not work because of the conflict with the one already there. How do I turn it off. I really need to get this working. Any ideas? [opensuse] dbus/hald/udevd question

Hi there, If I have a device (specifically, a Nikon Coolpix camera) which I want the udev to create a device for but do not want the system to access it in any other way - how do I do that? In short, I don't want the system to offer me to open it as a mass storage device nor do anything else until I decide to access it. The reason I want to try it is that it looks like the settings I introduce to the camera get lost because the system is monitoring it somehow. Would be nice to turn that monitoring off. Thanks. [opensuse] APIC / IO-APIC mandatory on multi core CPUs?

Hi there, I suffer from often X crashes and keyboard hanging once in a while. I now read disabling APIC may cure this. Since I still use a single CPU system I am curious to know, can the APIC / IO-APIC be safely disabled on a computer that has a CPU with several cores? Or is APIC mandatory for multi core CPUs? [opensuse] KDM Woes

I'm in the cycle of KDE 4.2.96 daily updates. I'm faced with an oddity with KDM It used to be that I could run 'systemsettings' and go via "advanced" -> "login manager" at which point I'd be asked for the root password. I could then either set the theme for KDM or set up a custom background, and then various other settings. Well now a 'zypper dup' or 'zypper up' that brings in a new kdm also tells me that it has brought in a new config file but saved it as a RPMNEW. However that /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc and the backgroundrc is being ignored. In fact the systemsettings doesn't ask for the root password and can't alter the file, and when I use KDESU an the config file does get changed, this 4.2.96 KDM ignores it. What this new KDM *does* take notice of is the setting in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. Its currently set to SUSE. KDM now seems to be using the settings in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes However when I try fetching new themes I can't - lets leave that for the moment. I can't call this changed behaviour an outright bug, unless you want to call systemsettings doing nothing a bug. But its changed, an the control I once had over the login screen via GUI, as opposed to editing the contents of a theme, the graphics and the XML, by hand. But its changed.
