I'm in the cycle of KDE 4.2.96 daily updates. I'm faced with an oddity with KDM It used to be that I could run 'systemsettings' and go via "advanced" -> "login manager" at which point I'd be asked for the root password. I could then either set the theme for KDM or set up a custom background, and then various other settings. Well now a 'zypper dup' or 'zypper up' that brings in a new kdm also tells me that it has brought in a new config file but saved it as a RPMNEW. However that /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc and the backgroundrc is being ignored. In fact the systemsettings doesn't ask for the root password and can't alter the file, and when I use KDESU an the config file does get changed, this 4.2.96 KDM ignores it. What this new KDM *does* take notice of is the setting in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. Its currently set to SUSE. KDM now seems to be using the settings in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes However when I try fetching new themes I can't - lets leave that for the moment. I can't call this changed behaviour an outright bug, unless you want to call systemsettings doing nothing a bug. But its changed, an the control I once had over the login screen via GUI, as opposed to editing the contents of a theme, the graphics and the XML, by hand. But its changed. I'm not one of these people who follows the KDE lists an IRC, so I'm wondering if this is a real design change, and anomaly, some setting I've missed or what. can someone who does track these things please advise me. -- There are two ways to slide easily through life: to believe everything or to doubt everything; both ways save us from thinking. -- Alfred Korzybski -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, yes and no. I look at the date on that and yes, I ha this problem of no admin mode in systemsetting back in the early days of 11.1 But that got fixed. (for a while ...) An anyway, systemsetting/login-mamanger updated /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc and backgroundrc The new KDM is ignoring those, despite the package updating them. It is ONLY looking at the value in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. So that bug is completely irrelevant. Even if there was an administrator mode in systemsettings this version of KDM isn't going to pay any attention to kdmrc. That's what I mean when I say the behaviour has changed. -- Intel - still number 0.999873464508 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The bug is still 100% relevant. You cannot access "Administrator Setting" in the kde control center as a normal user (period). That functionality is still "broken" in kde 4.2.96 (4.3 Beta 2). Works in KDE3, broken in KDE4. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Oh, and the SUDO work around allows me to access the login-manager and it updates the kdmrc file, but KDM ignores it, paying attention ONLY to the /etc/sysconfig, as I mentioned. -- Teachers open the door. I rarely use login manager and I only noticed it after I had to remove autologin due to another bug where I was able to login to a non existent gnome and couldn't get out, so I can't recall when this happened (I run factory) but there is a thread started on the 19th on the opensuse-kde list for the same problem ,http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2009-07/msg00082.html is the first message in the thread, also where I got the bug number from, and it is allegedly only scheduled to be fixed in kde4.4 but if you scroll down the bug you will come across https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151669#c101 where the commenter says it seems to be better in the latest ubuntu. This is certainly not so in opensuse factory yet though. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

+1 And the very sad part....... <quote> Description From Grósz Dániel 2007-11-01 01:46:13 (-) [reply] Version: (using KDE Devel) Installed from: Compiled sources OS: Linux There is no Administrator mode button in Systemsettings in KDE 4.0 beta 4 in modules like Login manager or Date & Time which usually need administrator rights. It was there in earlier versions which makes me think this is a bug. </quote> This bug has been open for ** 21 ** months and is still not fixed.
