[opensuse] iptables MASQUERADE problems with oss 11.2

The setup involved in this issue was working perfectly fine with oss 10.X and 11.1. The problem arose after an in-place upgrade to oss 11.2. Basically the machine (call it machine A with internal IP address 192.168.10.10) is configured to do masquerade via iptables (with a custom script). The relevant line is: $IPTABLES -t mangle -A PREROUTING -m iprange --src-range 192.168.10.50-192.168.10.200 -j MARK --set-mark 2 $IPTABLES -t mangle -A FORWARD -m iprange --src-range 192.168.10.50-192.168.10.200 -j MARK --set-mark 2 $IPTABLES -t nat -A POSTROUTING -m mark --mark 2 -o comcast1 -j MASQUERADE Once this is in place, initiating (for example) ping www.yahoo.com from a machine with ip address 192.168.10.52 shows that traffic is making it's way to machine A on A's internal interface, then the traffic is getting "masqueraded" (packets source ip gets changed to the valid public address of machine A) and sent out the interface called comcast1, reply comes back from www.yahoo.com and enters machine A properly on interface comcast1 and that's it ... the packet never gets mapped back to the inside host that sent it. I see this sequence of events in a packet capture btw (Wireshark with capture on pseudo-interface to capture all interfaces). This exact same script worked fine with oss11.1 and earlier versions - is anyone here aware of any changes in oss11.2 that could prevent something like this from working? I'm trying to use Open Office on Windows 7. I assume it works the same way on Linux. How do I make it use curly apostrophes and curly quotes, like I used to be able to do in WordPerfect? I am writing and editing material for a newsletter, and I need the capability. I know that M/S Word can be made to do this, but I don't know how, since I have never used it. [opensuse] gmonstart / jvregisterclasses in tons of binaries with commands,malware?

In linux binaries, in any linux distro, I've discovered the same strings which I believe may be due to a virus or trojan. Yet, clamav, rkhunter, chkrootkit do not detect abnormalities. Whether I run 'strings' on the binary files or view with vim or gedit, here is what is always seen inside the binaries: __gmon_start__ _Jv_RegisterClasses Followed by commands which differ within each binary. If, by some luck, I've downloaded a fresh Linux ISO where binaries do not include the above two strings followed by commands, after I run an update the updated binaries suddenly contain the above two strings and other, what I believe to be, rogue strings. I've avoided the possible infection with an OpenBSD install, yet all the Linux installations and burned ISOs contain binaries with the above two strings followed by commands. Search using find within your bin and sbin directories for those two strings and see how many positives you find. Now use a text editor like vi or gedit and search through the gibberish, locate these strings and isolate the commands, if any, which follow them. Searching for gmonstart, gmon, registerclasses, jv, etc. variations of works. If you find results in your binaries, please copy/paste the commands following the gmonstart and jvregisterclasses strings so I may compare them to mine. I've purchased Linux CDs from brick + mortar stores, downloaded ISOs from different physical locations and found some CDs contained these strings in the binaries and one or two rare ones did not, but when installed/updated on a network connection the binaries replaced in the update process would show these strings!! These strings are not alone by themselves in the binaries they follow with commands with a @ mark before each command. Google results are vague, some suggest shell backdoors, every Linux user I've asked to date calls me paranoid while at the same time this knowledge comes as a surprise to them, too, when they search their binaries and find the same strings. I'm amazed by how quickly some rush to judgement and call you a paranoid for being curious about the files on your system. The strings may/may not be common, but in comparing commands which follow these strings I've noticed some which seem down right malicious! Maybe they're right, I'm just paranoid, but what am I seeing and why are these strings so common across Linux distros binaries, esp. the Jv (java?) reference? [opensuse] loaded mplayer and the sound is gone

I downloaded with zhypper mplayer/ and now the sound is gone. Nothing I've tried, either in yast or alsa seems to get it running. I suspect the issue has to do with the pulse audio. I have a Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) sound card which worked just fine in opensuse 9.2 and works in Memphis. I'm really at a loss here and very fustrated. [opensuse] USB irda and my dive computer

Hey all... I am trying to get my dives off a UWATEC Aladin Prime. I am running the smarttrak software using wine, and although it has some graphics problems it seems to be running correctly. However it can find the dive computer. When I tried to set up irda in Yast, all it gave me for choices were /dev/ttyS1 .. 3, which didn't work. So..... Any ideas? [opensuse] updates failing

Hi all, My system runs: Linux Linux-A105 2.6.25.20-0.5-pae #1 SMP 2009-08-14 01:48:11 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux and something has gotten jammed in the updates and software management system. If I try to run the package manager, I get a complaint that says "Another process is accessing the package database. Package management cannot be used now" This, as you probably guessed, isn't true. My inference is that some lock file didn't get cleaned up a while back and should be manually deleted. Can anyone tell me what and where that lock file might be?
