[opensuse] KDE Control Login manager module messes up config file

Hello listmates, openSUSE 11.1, KDE 4.1.3: Using the KDE Control Center, the Login Manager module, I got the KDM config file messed up: /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc. kdm_config now complains in /var/log/messages about multiple occurrences of the following keys: Languages ShowUsers Theme UseBackground UseTheme I have to go in there by hand to fix it up. It seems to me that this module shouldn't leave kdmrc in a state of mess. [opensuse] openSUSE 11, KDE 3.5...best way to get KDE 4.1 running?

Hello listmates, I am happily running an installation of openSUSE 11 on this machine, with KDE 3.5. Everything works nice and I'm really satisfied with the system. However..in the future, I will probably want to move to KDE 4.1. (or .2). What is the best way to get KDE 4 running along KDE 3.5? Should I use the 1-Click Installer? Should I add repos and install it from there? If I want a stable KDE 4 desktop, with regular updates, which repos should I add? Stable? Factory? Questions, questions, questions... The main goal is to give KDE 4 a good, stable run, work with it, get the feel of it. I'll try to create a coherent report of my findings too. So in a nutshell, how do I get the best KDE 4 experience? [opensuse] slow nfs over wifi

Is wifi designed to be able to mount nfs shares? My connection is superb over Internet via my ISP but eg my xmas photos from my mobile took 10 minutes to download 20 Mb or so via nfs. And during nfs stuff the dlink connection to my router shows only 2 bars out of 5. As soon as nfs finishes it's back to 5/5. Maybe you're not supposed to use nfs over wireless. Please no 'works for me'. Just whether it can work properly or not. Only personal experiences please. No theory! 11.1 with a 64 bit nfs server and a laptop also on 11.1 connecting using kinternetmanager out of the box which I do not want to change. Phew. [opensuse] Question about repositories

Hi all, I have been searching the opensuse repository for a package called BRLTTY. Its a package that will let a visually impaired user to use linux with a braille display. There is something called opensuse blinux, but that only supports a few braille devices. I have downloaded some RPMs but there are dependency issues. So my question is, any other repository i may check out? I have not worked that much with repositories in the passed, but I know what it is. Any help would be apreciated, many thanks. [opensuse] Simple OO question about combining a cover letter and a spreadsheet?

All, I want to create multi-format document. The first page or two would be cover letter. The later pages would be spreadsheets. Can that done in OO? Can it be exported into a MS Office supported combined doc? (Its been a while since I did this even in MS, but I assume MS still supports it.) [opensuse] CF cards for system installation and hard drive suspend

Hi! I'm building a new server for video storage (editing). Due size, power and financial limitations I'm thinking about server that has OpenSUSE installed on CF card and data installed on one 1.5Tb Seagate, which is rsynced to another. So, not mirrored by RAID, but rather "manually synced every night to provide 1 day backups". But I want the system to be running all the time but at the same time consume as little power as possible. Therefore I'm thinking about installing the system on 4Gb CF. So, now the questions: What should I know about installing the system partitions on a CF card? Should I put swap there also? If not, why not? Will the CF card wear down? Should I invest in faster CF cards? The system will probably have 2Gb memory. Also, does OpenSUSE 11.1 spin down the 1.5Tb data hard drives when they are not in use? Or can it be easily configured to do so? The previous system has RAID-5 with 500Gb disks and that RAID doesn't seem to spin down ever. I'm thinking of having the system and swap on the CF card so that if nobody is using the data in this server, the disks could spin down and the whole system should not consume much energy. I'm also investigating in using Intel Atom 330 for this server. Would there be any problems with that? [opensuse] Laptop Backlight on OS 11.1 & KDE4

Hi, First of all, happy newyear, good health to everyone. I'm experimenting with OS 11.1 32bit and KDE 4 on my laptop. I have a strange problem with the backlight of the LCD. Every time I boot the machine the backlight is very dim, you can hardly see anything on the screen. How can I fix this ? One advantage of the new OS is that the special keys for the screen-backlight do work, while on 10.3 they didn't. Another thing I noticed : there is some way to control the backlight in software (can't find it at the moment !) but this works backward (I think) : moving the slider to the right darkens the backlight, to the left it brightens. Installing or upgrading openSUSE is fairly easy. We could used any choice : DVD installation, LiveCD, LiveUSB or by using net install CD for network installation. But, How if we do not have any of CD, DVD, or USB The only one we have is existing openSUSE with attached network. [opensuse] Image resizing?

Is there a Linux utility that I can use to convert a folder of larger images to 480x234, the native size for the digital picture frame my wife bought me? It occurs to me that it probably would be more efficient if I fed it images that are its default size, so that it doesn't need to scale them down.
