[opensuse] Input/Ouput error when doing ll on drive mount?

One of the (desktop/home) computers I am supporting is having issues. We decided to back up all the data to an external 750GB USB drive and do a complete OS rebuild (it's running openSUSE 10.1 and it's time to update so something newer anyway) The USB drive was connected, and recognized fine. The drive was formatted as vfat (FAT32) because it needs to be easily accessed by other OSes. It as formatted as one big partition. We started copying files across, and this was working fine. Files were being copied, and checking on the USB drive showed them OK (files were verified as copied correctly, and then were removed from the source). Since this was working well we switched to moving instead of copying. The file move ran unattended for about 2 hours. Checking back, the USB drive was unmounted at some point - no idea why. Anyone know what may have happened? Why is the listing of directories showing a directory size of 16384? I've never seen anything like this before... so a little puzzled here, and any help, ideas, thoughts etc would be more than welcome. Yes I know, we should have continued the copy and not done move, but... well... that is what was done. I just hope this can be sorted out and the files that in theory are in each directory are still there... and not lost... [opensuse] unable to install SLES RAID 1 in SAN

Hi all you guys ! I'm doing some tests with SLES installing in a SAN but I something wierd is happening. I assigne 2 LUNS in 2 differents HBAs and I see both hard disks during the installation and I do the next schema of partition: hda --hda1 (RAID type) --> 100 MB for boot --hda2 (RAID type) --> Rest of the disk for LVM ( sawp and / ) hdb --hdb1 (RAID type) --> 100 MB for boot --hdb2 (RAID type) --> Rest of the disk for LVM ( sawp and / ) The installation procedure finished ok. But when I restart I get the next message a lot of times and I can't start even in secure mode... Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found No volume groups found Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found No volume groups found Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found No volume groups found In normals Hard Disks I can install in the same way with no problems Does anybody know something about it... [opensuse] FF3 and java

[opensuse] Regarding setting accents: how to define compose key?

From the howto on "Linux Compose Key Sequences" (8 sept 07): you will first need to set up a compose key. Details may vary depending on your Linux setup, but it should be something like this: * Open the Control Centre / desktop configuration tool. * Select "Regional / Keyboard Layout". * Select "Xkb Options". * Scroll down to "Compose Key Position". * Select which key you would like to use as a compose key. The menu key works well for me. Following these instructions, I defined my keyboard as US-intl, but from then on I was lost: no way to select "Xkb Options", and the other two not either. Someone able to tell me how to define my "Compose Key Position"? [opensuse] WD MyBook

I am thinking about getting a WD Mybook but their site says it only works with Windoze and MAC. I use opensuse 11 RC1 now but when 11.0 comes out i will use that. [opensuse] Problems with Nvidia driver on SLI system

Am I missing something or is there a problem with Nvidia drivers, 11.0 and *some" cards. Or is it a Yast/Sax2 problem? I have installed 11.0 (clean install) in the 32 bit version on a machine running a GeForce 7300GT and everything went perfectly well (including dual screen setup). I tried to install the x86_64 version on an AThlon X2 that has two GeForce 7900GS (SLI) and never got a working screen. I tried again with the i386 versions, same problem (but by copying the the xorg.conf file from 10.3 it did work in the end - I did not attempt a new 64bit install to test). An upgrade from 10.3 to 11.0 on my T60p widescreen brought not only a working X, but I've got openGL support that was not working with 10.3 (ksquirrel and Google Earth work now). Note that 10.3 x86_64 installed with no trouble on the SLI system, including 3D Nvidia support. Given that the problem seems to be the xorg.conf file, not the Nvidia driver, is this a SuSE 11.0 "bug"? If anyone has experience about that I'd like to share... [opensuse] Can not display YAST2 modules in 11.0

I have an interesting problem in regards to YAST2 modules. After installing multimedia codecs and packages from several community repos YAST2 modules do not display after being clicked. I can see the processes when I do a ps -A, but never get a window and have to end up killing the process. I have no problem using the command line version of YAST just the QT version. I thought it might have to do with installing the beta version of VLC with the QT interface, but an uninstall did not correct the problem. I have a laptop and PC that I can reproduce the problem on. I guess I could spend all weekend trying to figure out what combination is causing the issue, but would rather slog through log files. Am I on the right track by looking in the /var/log/YaST2/y2log file? I have two hard drives in my computers, another security, Win xp on drive and suse on the second At the time of installing suse the installer came to a point if I wanted to install it on it on hda.,, but I suggested hdb.. suse got onto my second drive. When all done I had to correct the bios for an adjustment. That is for the startup from the primary drive. Without the adjustment windows seen mysterious absent, however it is there. Another reason for a second drive is to keep Linux safer from the pirates.
