Go to Yast->network devices and click the DNS/hostname tab. You can change the hostname there. [opensuse] GeForce 6200oc and SuSE 11.0 doesn't work

After installing SuSE 11.0, the first time X comes up the screen is in solid black and white areas. The cursor is a large rectangle and the keyboard seems completely disabled. The keyboard LEDs do not respond to shift and keypad lock changes. I can't CTRL-ALT-DELETE or CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE out. After hard rebooting to init level 3 and installing the nvidia drivers (with yast) and I try to just test the new setup I get a failure to load of "nvidia" and the same thing. No way out. If (after I reboot) I try to modprobe nvidia, I get a comment about no such hardware. The log file does not help. Trying the free nvidia drivers I get the same broken server. My setup works fine with SuSE 10.3 and the latest Ubuntu. [opensuse] Error reading sector 512 on openSUSE DVD?

I was planning on installing openSUSE on my computer tonight, but... I can't. I am running up against a problem i can't seem to solve or find any info on. I have downloaded the 32 bit DVD ISO, and checked the MD5 sums. All is OK there. I tested the ISO by installing into VirtualBox (using VBox to mount the ISO for installing), and all worked there. I used K3B to burn the ISO to DVD, and tried installing on my computer... and it fails. It boots, and I see the initial welcome screen, then the boot menu. I can pick Installation from the menu, and the Linux kernel loads. The next screen is shown which has the tiny progress bar.. about 25% of the way in the installer stops, drops to text mode and asks me to insert CD1. I navigated through the text menus and found the Check Installation Media option.. ran that, and it almost immediately returns this message: Error reading sector 512. This DVD is broken. I Googled on this error and found only one hit to a forum (in Serbian) which appears to be a similar problem someone had on openSUSE 10.3.. but I can't read Serbian so I am just guessing... I tried burning the ISO 3 different times to 3 different DVDs, and got the exact same results. I burned a different ISO (Ubuntu) on one of the DVDs (rewritable) and it's fine... so I assume that the DVD burner, the K3B software, and the physical DVD media are functioning... Does anyone have any idea what this error message really means? or what I am missing here? [opensuse] 11.0 Sound Problem

I'm having problems setting up sound in 11.0. I think all the options are confusing me. The YaST Sound Configuration module tells me: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller • Configured as sound card number 0 • Driver snd-hda-intel I set both the Master & PCM volume sliders to 67 but Test produces no sound. The help screen just confused me more. All I'm looking for is a preferably simple setup that will allow most applications to produce basic sound. If you know of such a setup, please point me to it. Any assistance will be appreciated. Don Henson

[opensuse] problem mounting multisession DVD-R

Hello list users: I can't mount a multisession DVD-R with UDF filesystem on my openSUSE 10.3 system. When the disc is inserted the icon is placed onto the desktop but the disc is not being mounted. When I try to mount it by right click/mount I get this error message: "mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so" dmesg says the following: UDF-fs: No VRS found If I try to mount the DVD from the command line (mount -t udf /dev/sr0 /mnt) I get the same message, but I can mount the first session: # mount -t udf -o session=0 /dev/sr0 /mnt mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only # I googled and found that others had the same problem but I could not find any solution. [opensuse] bzip2 heats cpu

[opensuse] NIS login names

In KDE 3.5 I used to get a list of all login names. In KDE 4.0 (openSUSE 11.0) I now only get the names of persons who have already logged in on that machine. Anyone know how to get the full list of everyone. [opensuse] sudo Differences on separate 10.3 installs?

Listmates, On 2 different 10.3 installs (both identical except for Firefox) sudo (or kdesudo) works totally different, why? Specifically, on one I am asked for a root password in kde for Yast and kde control center "Administrator Mode", on the other, no password is required. It doesn't make sense. Both have "%wheel ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: SETENV: ALL" in /etc/sudoers by visudo and on both, the user is a member of the wheel group. Why doesn't sudo work the same on both? What can I check? [opensuse] KDM and Users' Photos

In KDE 3, I had photos of the users appear on the login screen by specifying (in kcontrol) that kdm should use the .face.icon file in the user's home directory. I can't seem to find anyway to do that in kde4. Does anyone know of a solution?
