[opensuse] Computer does not turn off

hi there, i just installed 10.3 to an old athlon 1200. the problem is, that after shutting down suse, the computer does not turn off. [opensuse] look inside a initrd?

I have been asked by a local company to help debug some appliance that is booting a image.gz with syslinux. It is loaded from CF in a ramdisk an then runs without harddisk. All I have is a image.gz. The syslinux.cfg has: ide=nodma initrd=image.gz ramdisk=80000 rw root=/dev/ram Is there a way to look inside image.gz in a way as I explore a filesystem on harddisk (with ls, less files, etc)? Tried to mount with -o loop, but getting wrong fs type. For me, I have my own ideas about desktop installations, knowing my own workload types, but for servers a more advanced install with a greater choice of file system types exposed might be better. Taking sensible choices for the end user for a desktop installation can be a good thing - something we've started on already with the /home partition being suggested as a separate partition. [opensuse] setting up a DNS slave Suse 10.2

Hello, I am poking around in Yast/DNS Server, but I don't see an area to let me set up the server as a secondary slave server. Can this be done in Yast on 10.2? [opensuse] i915 video on Fujitsu Siemens portables

I have just installed 10.3 on 3 portables, 2 Fujitsu Siemens and 1 supermarket special, they all have i915 video cards. Each one has the same problem, the gdm login screen does not fill the screen but is displayed leaving a margin on the right and bottom of the screen. The task bar then takes up position according to that screen layout. Firefox occupies the whole screen when the expand to full size icon is clicked covering up the task bar. Openoffice wiil not expand greater than the login screen's original size. Control centre screen resolution shows only 1024x768 available in the Resolution settings. Rebooting with run level 3, logging in and then using "startx" everything is perfect and the required resolutions then become available in Control centre screen resolution. This works if /etc/sysconfig/videobios VIDEOBIOS_PATCH has the setting at either yes or no. Luckily I can demonstrate to these, hopefully, Linux converts that Linux is worth persuing because my HP with a bottom of the range ATI works perfectly. [opensuse] Screen stretched and blurred after ATI update

I was running the 8.40.x driver for my Radeon Xpress 1100 card and I updated to the newer 8.45.x driver and ran the necessary commands to set it up # aticonfig --initial # init 3 # sax2 -r # init 5 and once X.org started back up I noticed KDM was stretched and once I logged in and saw my desktop I noticed that everything was also blurred. My screen resolution and everything is the same as it was with the 8.40.x driver, 1280x1024 SXGA, 24 bit colors, at about 60 HZ refresh rate. If it wasn't for the stretched windows and blurred text this would be fine, everything works at a decent speed and the only thing I am confused about is that I thought that newer ATI drivers was coming with aiglx just like the open source driver.

[opensuse] Kaddressbook

Unless I have overlooked it, Kaddressbook (although it can store telephone numbers) is not capable of using them to dial a telephone. Surely there is another address-book utility that can do that. [opensuse] problems installing OpenSUSE 10.3 in Via EPIA

hi, I'm having troubles to install OpenSUSE in a Via Epia Motherboard. I can install the OS, the machine reboots but then when the configuration begins (root's password, ...) the machine freezes in the last point "Hardware configuration". I've found a similar bug reported to the OpenSUSE bugzilla [1] but in my case I cann't switch to the text-console. If I tried to switch to it the machine freezes (even before arriving to the "Hardware configuration" section). The solution proposed isn't valid for me. Could you give me any advice to solve this? For example, how could I begin a text-based installation in OpenSUSE to try to avoid the freeze... [opensuse] /boot and grub with several systems ?

Hi, I'd like to know how I can have a single /boot partition and just one grub to start OpenSUSE X and X-1, ubuntu and Win2000. OpenSUSE X would be the current release and OpenSUSE X-1 the one I used before. Usually I keep the last version when I updrade so I can look stuff up and have a working rescue system. Ubuntu would be to test their server release. Those 3 should share a /boot partition. Then Win2k for some work related applications. For now I've got a SUSE grub starting that can launch windows and fork to another grub in the ubuntu-partition. This wasn't actually planned but happend while installing this and that over time. It's just messed up.
