[opensuse] White screen with Beryl

Hi, I've been trying to get Beryl working with openSUSE 10.2 but I haven't had much success. To set it up I basically followed http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl - and I've tried both AIGLX and just plain nVidia drivers. Here's what happens: GNOME - Beryl tries to start at login, but after about 20 secs of sluggish mouse response, the Fall-back window manager (Kwin in my case) starts. If I now manually tell beryl-manager to start beryl as the window manager, it manages to do so (again, ~20 secs of sluggish response) and it works fine. KDE - Completely white screen after login (and again the mouse is sluggish). The desktop seems to be there, but since all is white I can't do anything but ctrl+alt+backspace. [opensuse] Strange sound "clicking" in Kaffeine

Hey guys! After long and crazy move to the other side of the planet I'm finally back here. I'm having a strange problem, when playing DVD's or any Videos with Kaffeine, I can hear kind of "clicking" in the background... I can survive with it for 10 minutes but then it gets annoying... I'm using Kaffeine 0.8.4, KDE 3.5.5 and openSUSE 10.2. I've done some googling, but since I even don't know how to formulate it correctly - no luck :( No problems with XMMS. Any directions or help will be so much appreciated. After upgrading to the kernel-source-2.6.18.8-0.5 package, I see no "features.h" in either linux or SCSI includes (XEN has one). I can't compile the kernel: ... What package am I missing (or is this header auto-made)? There needs to be an online, completely patched, RPM database that allows you to perform an "rpm -q --whatprovides ..." to find RPMs you don't have. Hi! :-) THANKS to James, Jerry and Sunny for their help! ;-) Unfortunatelly, I couldn't manage to launch (gnome) nautilus as su. I tried the suggested solutions, among some similar ones (eg. gksu, gksudo etc.), but all of them stucked just after su pwd confirmation. Anyway, completing the respective task in kde environment, was just a piece of cake! :-) My next task, is installing opensuse with kde as default desktop. :-) THANKS AGAIN, for your help!!! [opensuse] 10.2 Freezing On Boot

I have had 10.2 installed on one of my boxes since it was first released and until today it never given me any problems. When I turned this box on today the boot process started and froze at "Setting up the hardware clock". Tried several hardware resets and a few attempts at a "Safe Boot", but it continues to freeze at the same point. There is no problem booting into Win XP, or live CDs from 4 other distros where there does not appear issue with the date/time setting. Can anyone offer any thoughts or suggestions as to a possible cause and/or solution. TIA Dave

I will not do so and try to ignore all Suse related bugs that's why (in Debian I report everything, often provide patches but OpenSuse, oh no ...). I have been unable to install open SUSE from a DVD to my desktop PC. Using Suse 10.2 on Dell Latitude D820, when I plug in an external USB hard drive I get the above message. This is a new problem. This used to work, but lately I have been having problems with usb drives.Also just tried a 1 GB Sandisk, same problem. What is causing this all of a sudden? One thing I did do yesterday was an online update, but there were only 5 updates that were security related. Оленька! Разделался с очередной порцией авральных дел (ненадолго, уверен, что к концу дня подбросят еще) и решил ответить. Описание "ягодного безумия" столь наглядно! Я очень хорошо понимаю и удовольствие от сбора ("не забуду клюквь родную") и силу привычки. Не понимаю только почему люди перестали есть варенье? Диеты? Ерунда все. Я понемногу, но ем - с творогом, например, или с мороженым. Тут появились всякие "русские" фирмы которые делают иногда очень даже неплохое варенье (клюква, абрикос, вишня, та же клубника). В.И. у нас все получает водород в фотовольтаической ячейке. Не знаю, я вообще скептически отношусь ко всей этой электрохимии. Что это ей даст? Не знаю, может быть моральное удовлеткорение. В принципе, когда мы искали "вкладчиков", некоторые говорили - слишком рано. Вот если бы был патент - тогда... Т.е. было бы какое-то подтверждение потенциальной пригодности идеи. Я от Турции отбился, но идея еще не умерла - они с Манькой пока собираются, если смогут получить ту же гостиницу, где Любы с Лешей будут. Насчет дешивизны, большой вопрос. Тут предлагают пакет "все включено" за 700 долларов. Дотошная Манька уже переписалась с гостиницей и те объяснили, что "все - да не все". Например напитки только местные. Если захочешь датского пива - надо платить... Но пока они еще не получили подтверждение заказа. Про 2008 думаю да, приеду. Но пока еще слишком рано загадывать. Про "квазиупорядоченный" бардак, я, честно говоря, имел в виду американов, а не израильтян (становлюсь патриотом :-) ) Тут все учитывают склонность к бардаку и соответственно работают. Даже во время курса по работе в "многокультурной среде" нам все время подчеркивали, что это типично для израильтян и неприемлемо во многих других культурах. Кстати, там прозвучало нечто, что поразило моего товарища Мишу Левина. Он в Союзе успел отслужить в армии на Дальнем Востоке, (офицер-2х годичник) и у него остался некий пиеетет к армейской дисциплине и иерархии. Поэтому когда он услышал, что в израильской армии солдат учат на поле боя импровизировать - для него это было потрясением. Пока все. Иду на очередную совещалку. Всего наилучшего, всем приветы. М. [opensuse] SUSE 10.0: USB audio static noise

Hi all, I have a couple of different USB audio devices that works under SUSE 10.0, but they all exhibit a nasty burst of static/noise when changing songs (it happens with all player apps). Sometimes the noise also occurs when the player is open but not playing (in stopped state). The noise disappears when the song starts playing. I tested on three different computers, two desktops and one laptop and the same thing happens under SUSE 10.0, but there is no noise under Win XP on the same computers. I think I could rule out any hardware issues due to the above. It's more likely to be a USB audio driver issue. Anyone else here excounter the same problem? Any solution? My SUSE 10.0 has the "stock" 2.6.13 kernel but with all YOU updates applied. [opensuse] Replaced ALL HW: Tyan S2469 Athlon MP still hangs OpenSuSE 10.2

Tearing out my hair on this one... A few months ago, a new kernel caused printing to freeze the system, but I don't think that's related (have tried all BIOS settings; one-way, ECP, EPP). The first symptom was (your not going to believe it) Firefox tabs quit responding to the mouse. (That seemed to be fixed after replacing the motherboard... but, I'm getting ahead of the story.) System started hanging a few weeks ago. No error messages... just hangs tight. I was playing w/ some new hardware and had to power-cycle a lot, so I figured I killed some HW. I removed a processor... didn't fix it; replaced the running processor, with the one I took out... didn't fix it. I tried running one stick of RAM at a time... didn't fix it. Removed all peripherals, swapped video cards, disabled USB, printer, and serial in the BIOS, replaced the SCSI card, replaced SCSI w/ IDE (same image)... didn't fix it. Replaced the motherboard, with new processors... didn't fix it. Put all the PCI adapters/devices/video disks on a newer Intel motherboard... it works... no hangs! So, I'd figure it was the kernel... but I haven't changed kernels (as I used a fixed-frequency monitor and need the Matrox driver built-in) and hadn't allowed any of the Yast updates to update the kernel. [opensuse] openSuSE 10.3 display resolution problem

I have installed openSuSE 10.3 alpha 5 and I have an odd problem when setting display resolution. In sax2 it is correctly reported as 1440x900, but actually it is 1024x768 and I cannot change it from the desktop (right click, configure desktop, display, etc.) Is there a way to solve this? [opensuse] Loosing KDE settings (again)

Hi, Im goint try this again, Im running KDE 3.4 on openSUSE 10.2. Couple of reboots ago I started loosing my keyboard and mouse settings. Single click, keyboard repeat, mouse acceleration is all messed-up. When I go to the Configure Panel and click on the Default button the correct settings are displayed, when I then Apply everything works normally, until a restart looses it again. Where are the settings kept? and what program loads them? [opensuse] qt4.3.0-69.1

I have qt4.3.0-69.1 and family on my 10.2 system which I got from online update. The Skype engineers are telling me that this version is buggy and has been replaced by .2, .3 and now .4 which is the latest and solves some problems they are seeing. What are the chances of SUSE providing the latest qt4 and family as an RPM ? Hi ! Some time ago I have seen sipfoundry sipX rpms. Unfortunately, I have not remember in which suse repositories directory. Now I have looked into "servers" and "messaging" dirs, they are not here.
