[opensuse] Burning CDs

I used to use xcdroast with no problems (and cdrdao for audio CDS) but since 10.2 I have been pointed at K3B, which seems very iffy at best. First I do not run KDE or Gnome, and the way in which k3b keeps jammering about integration to some non-existent system is irritating. Worse is that it does not always work. Today it burnt the CD but then it froze when verifying. the CD is OK, but I could not even get k3b to quit afterwards. Is there an alternative software base to burn data CDs? Hi all ! I came across a problem: splitting files. How to best approach this problem ? I have used "split" command: Like that, to split 1 ISO file into many 1 MB files. split -d -b $[1000*1000] --verbose ../visopsys-0.62.iso But I came across a problem, how-to merge them back? I'm having no luck figuring out why alias Vol='tune2fs -l $1 | grep volume' causes a usage message when 'Vol /dev/hda7' is run. [opensuse] simple firewall scripts

Hi, for smaller installations (using a Linux gateway) I used to use SuSEfirewall2 which basically has everything I needed so far. Now I'd something for another usecase: An old Linux gateway (with SuSEfirewall) got a hardware gateway in front of it now which blocks traffic from outside. So there is no need anymore to do extensive filtering and also masquerading on the old gateway while it's still there as kind of second stage hiding the internal network behind it. Now I still need to control which traffic is allowed from the inside to the internet which was done via FW_MASQ_NETS in SF2. Since I want to get rid of a second masquerading, SuSEfirewall has no mechanism to control this traffic anymore. Now I could write all iptables rules on my own (which is possible but I'm kind of lazy in that case) but I wonder if there is no other simple iptables "generator" outside which does it already. I plan to look at shorewall but thought I'd just ask here for recommendations. [opensuse] Mplayer and Yahoo conference calls

I use Mplayer (the default player suggested by Suse/KDE for conference calls from http://biz.yahoo.com/cc ) to listen to financial conference calls. In windows, starting any archived call triggers it to start immediately. (using media player). Mplayer launches, Clicks, and then just sits there. One becomes convinced it will not work. 20 minutes later it will start playing the lead-in music. It might do that for another 20 minutes. Then the call will start, and it works fine (other than having no ability to use the position slider to step backward and forward like Media Player). Under Windows Media player, the call starts instantly at the dialog portion. No music lead in. Is there any Linux player that works with these calls? Hi, I am subscribed to opensuse-bugs(a)opensuse.org after raising an enhancement request(293100). This item is still open and whilst I am waiting for it to be worked on, I am receiving notice on all new bugs founds as well as when each bug is commented on ie close on 250-> a day I have browsed the help sent via email but so far this does not answer my question. Does anyone know how to limit the number of emails received from the bugs list to those on your own bugs only? [opensuse] DNS Error Log - Solved

If you run a DNS server on your system you probably have been plagued with external sites trying to forward queries through your DNS server. Even though you probably have told your named.conf to allow-query {"localnets";}; or a list of valid IP's you probably still have a bunch of unnecessary probing that adds to your bandwidth consumption even if you reject the queries and send 'refused' packets back, it ties up your line. I got tired of literally hundreds, sometimes thoussands of such queries which I considered a form of attack and thought that "fail2ban" could be a solution. I know about as much about writing filters as I do about the differance between my posterior and a hole in the ground, but a fellow fail2ban list member took pity on me and in private E-mail, helped me develop a filter we call 'named-refused'. On 7/24 I installed it into fail2ban and started testing it. The results are in the log summary below. You will notice on the 24th, the filter 'named-refused was innvoked "a lot" and by the next day, it was back to the normal fighting off the sshd worm, and even that has gone way down since fail2ban was installed. I didn't post my entire log, but it is just as impressive to note that as of the 24th, fail2ban as reduced my DNS attack bandwidth to zero because whoever those badguys are have apparantly decided that because I no longer appear to exist that it isn't worth wasting their time trying anymore. As long as I responded to all of their attempts, even though they got 'refused' each time, they kept trying. Yay fail2ban and thank you Cyril (the author) for a fine product and our fellow list member for your patience and time. The log below shows how effective it can be. BTW, the exerpt from /messages was extracted BEFORE fail2ban was turned on with the new filter :) Because it is so effective and because a lot of SUSE users do use SSHd and DNS and experience worms and attacks, I want to document the effectiveness of fail2ban in solving the problem we face when we run those server/demons. I, for one, have my machine back! I run SUSE 10.2 and 10.3a6 and I am more than willing to zip up my /etc/fail2ban local files which should work with little or no modification on other distros. The gentleman that assisted me with the filter runs Debian and said he will submit a patch for Debian to Cyril (the Author of Fail2ban) to consider for distribution. BTW, the report below can be produced by: grep "Ban " /var/log/fail2ban.log | awk '{print $1,$5,$7}' | sort |uniq -c assuming your log file is in that directory with that name. Substitute your log file name if you don't use that name. [opensuse] can not update webcam drivers

Any pointers would be appreciated on this issue. After much googling and reading I have a working webcam. Hello folks! During the course of trying to build an app from the tgz sources, I received an odd looking message that gcc could not create an executable. I am looking at a simple way of setting it up. [opensuse] Ldap nub needs a little help

I am trying to setup an ldap server for email info ( Kmail and Outlook ). I did do quite a bit of reading but still can't get the hang of it yet. I just downloaded a couple of gui programs ( myldapklient and luma ) but these do not let me do an initial directroy setup ( if it's needed ) and with no data there (yet) they are not of much use. What am I missing? Recently I used ktorrant for the first and second time. it worked correctly but after the second time when I log in as <user> ktorrant automagically starts under kde. It completed the last task. Where can I go to stop this behavior. Morning, Wondering if there is an "easy" solution to connecting to an Exchange 2007 server from Evolution, on Suse10.2? The default packages don't support Exchange 2007, and I have been having issues trying to install the latest source for Evolution + Exchange connector.. Have got to this point: checking for CAMEL... yes checking for CAMEL_GROUPWISE... configure: error: Package requirements (camel-provider-1.2 libedataserver-1.2 >= 1.9.4 libegroupwise-1.2 >= 1.9.4) were not met: Requested 'libedataserver-1.2 >= 1.9.4' but version of libedataserver is 1.8.2 Requested 'libegroupwise-1.2 >= 1.9.4' but version of libegroupwise is 1.8.2 Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables CAMEL_GROUPWISE_CFLAGS and CAMEL_GROUPWISE_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. when trying to configure. Dear listmembers, maybe offtopic, but maybe someone could give me a pointer where to ask / what to do. I upgraded my good old SuSE 9.3 to gcc 4.1.2, I made the kernel 2.6.11 build with that compiler (was some work) and now I finally managed to make glibc-2.3.4-23.9 from the 9.3 distribution build given this combination of gcc / kernel - yes, well, with two issues: 1.) /* major issue IMHO */ one test fails, tst-signal1.c gives the output (tst-signal1.out): sending the signal now sigwait returned with Interrupted system call (4) thread joined?! child wasn't signalled The "child wasn't signalled message breaks the build, does someone has an idea what could be the root cause for this issue? We are trying to use AutoYast to automate installs of SLED on employees PCs. Everything works smoothly except when we attempt to install the Novell Client via the add-on feature. It worked fine on SLED10 SP0, but bombs out on SLED 10 SP1. Right before it begins to format the drives I get this error: "Could not set patterns or selections: novell-ncl". Hi: Continuing to work on the system I've installed xfce on opensuse 10.2 An xfce menu for yast2 is available,. but when selected it doesn't prompt for the root password, and only offers a couple of modules. Its not possible to install software or configure anything. I'm setting this system up for someone who has never used linux before - I would like to provide him with the ability to conveniently add software and configure the system. Can the menu item be modified so that it prompts for the root password? [opensuse] boot partition too small

For as long as I can remember I've set up a /boot partition with 15MB. Recently, however, routine kernel security updates (Suse 10.2) need slightly more space on /boot to perform the updates. What would be the safest way to get around this? I've thought of moving some symlinked files to another partition, performing update and then returning file to /boot. For example, vmlinuz points to vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-0.1-default which is on /boot. vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-0.1-default If I move vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-0.1-default to root "/", update and move it back then I should be OK. Is there something I might be overlooking that could lead to a catastrophe? Also, this process is an awkward workaround. Is there a better approach? [opensuse] EMC Retrospect client won't load

Hello, we have a SUSE system that we upgraded from 9. something to 10.2 64bit. Several things are not loading, most importantly our EMC Retrospect backup client. Here is the error: /usr/local/dantz/client/retroclient: relocation error: /lib/i686/ libc.so.6: symbol _dl_out_of_memory, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file ld-linux.so.2 with link time reference Google research indicates this is some kind of shared library error. Does anyone have any suggestions that could help resolve this? After failing miserably for years trying to get a reasonable screen capture program for Linux, I finally have something working! I had tried xvidcap and other x11/vnc options before reading about istanbul the other day. Thinking it would work I tried it out. It failed as well.
