[opensuse] In need of zlib-devel rpm

Hello all! I am trying to install zlib-devel from install Cd's but it says the package it not found on the medium. Is zlib-devel missing from the install CD's? hi list i am a newbie installing SUSE 10 for the first time. when installation from the first CD completes, it asks for reboot, and after reboot when system boots from harddisk, it drops to a shell and doesnt install remaining cds how can i resolve this problem Regards Azeem _________________________________________________________________ Don't just search. [opensuse] parse-metadata

Every now and then, such as now, my 64 bit SUSE 10.2 system becomes very sluggish. Top shows "parse-metadata" is hogging much of the CPU and there's also a lot of disk activity. [opensuse] fping for SUSE 6.1

Hi Guys I have a couple of remote servers (not _actually_ mine) running SUSE 6.1 in production. (Please don't bother to tell me to upgrade them. I am aware of ALL the issues and so is the owner). Now I need to install fping on these boxes, but the media has proven difficult to find. I have tried downloading the fping src.rpm file from SUSE 9.0 (The oldest SUSE version I could find on the FTP mirrors) but it has numerous macros etc in it which cause it to not build properly on 6.1. I do have some SLES8 cds around which will be my next try, before attempting to fix the spec file manually (I did try for a few minutes, but it turns out that almost ALL of the rpm macros in use today, did not exist on SUSE 6.1 so it is proving a huge trial and error effort. If any one has the SUSE 6.1 media kicking around I would appreciate them shooting me a copy of the fping source rpm (There are 6.1 - 7.x boxes on the network so I will need to build it for a few different versions) or even the fping binary rpm. [opensuse] How can we support better Virtualization in openSUSE ?

hi all ! I wrote an article about different types of Virtualization here: http://www.violtan.com/ae/virtualization.html This article describes 4 stages of Virtualization: Emulation, Full Virtualization, Para-Virtualization and OS-level Virtualization. I believe that openSUSE must excel at all types of Virtualization. openSUSE did some progress in terms of Virtualization: namely we consider integrating VirtualBox into openSUSE. Until now openSUSE is too focused on Xen. Xen-centric approach is bad. We need a wide array of technologies in openSUSE. Qemu and DOSbox emulators are fortunately already included. openSUSE 10.3 kernel also support USB-FS (allows for using USB in guest VMs) , KVM (Qemu-accelerator) and VMI (kernel paravirtualization) each of these technologies improve Virtualization further. One thing we still lack is OS-level Virtualization: such as OpenVZ - this technology allows for partial virtualization at speeds unreachable for Xen. The most serious problem with bringing OpenVZ to openSUSE is: their project is too RedHat-centric. This is a serious issue, because all of their documentation, packages, utilities, templates and even source-code patches are RedHat-centric, and none of their software work on SUSE. I have failed to bring this technology to openSUSE. I hope there are SUSE developers around who can break their RedHat monopoly and bring this excellent technology to SUSE. [opensuse] 10.3A4 No workflow defined for this installation mode

Hi! I tried to install 10.3A4 to clean machine. I select default installation (2nd row from the boot menu). But after starting linux kernel for installation, I get error message NO WORKFLOW DEFINED FOR THIS INSTALLATION MODE. I tried other methods - failsafe, ACPI disabled, etc. But I get this error always. This is a bug obviously. [opensuse] 32 bit VIA drivers

Greetings list I've had to install 32 bit SuSE 10.2 GM on AMD 64 bit architecture in order to get 32 bit proprietry drivers (external modem) to function :-) This results in the video drivers for Via chipset being loaded as 'FrameBuffer', and any reconfiguration I've tried doesn't load.
