Hi Rui and all, as I wrote on a previous email to the list (still no replies, though), I decided to remove the complete Beagle stuff. Not only it was (over)loading the system from time to time, it also created a lot of zombie/defunct processes, ate a lot of memory, etc etc. Anyway, it's normal that your Linux system takes up as much memory as possible. I read somewhere (maybe in this list) "memory not used, memory wasted"... [opensuse] nvidia binary driver - Lcd can't display at 60 Hz

Hi all, I've been following some of the advice on the list recently about improving the fonts in 10.2. I have seen a huge improvement so far, but there are still some issues. In looking into all of this however, I have discovered that I can't get my monitor to display at its native resolution (1280x1024) at 60 Hz. NOTE: I'm using KDE and to get the refresh rate I right click on the desktop, choose "Configure Desktop..." and then look at the refresh rate under "Display". Is there a command line alternative to get this info? Monitor: LCD BENQ FP937s Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce PCX 5750 NVidia Driver: 1.0-9746 I have been using sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia and have tried many variations but I can't get 60 Hz. I have tried selecting the generic LCD monitor (instead of the BENQ) and explicitly choosing the "1280x1024@60" mode, testing looks ok and claims to be at 60 Hz, but when I save the results and go to init 5, the display is back at 50 Hz. I've also tried (even though I don't know if I should) sax --vesa 0:1280x1024@60 which didn't help. I've also tried to generate another modeline using gtf 1280 1024 60 and replacing the modeline in xorg.conf with these values. This allows me to select between 50 Hz and 55 Hz from the KDE desktop settings, but still no 60 Hz. Finally, if I modify my current xorg.conf file and change the driver from "nvidia" to "nv" (and make only that change), I can get a display at 60 Hz, but I lose the 3D acceleration and some of the font improvements as well. On SUSE 10.2, enabling Xgl in KDE seems to be just as easy as specifying Xgl instead of Xorg in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER I see that this setting alone will take care of running compiz instead of kwin. The problem is that it runs compiz with a list of modules, not with "compiz --replace gconf" That can be seen with ps axl | grep compiz Where does it keep its list of the modules it runs compiz with, how can I change that? [opensuse] cron job email attachment.bin

My daily backup script on a server mails the output to me (it's a cron job run by root). Recently, instead of sending me a plain text email message, it's started sending me an empty email with an attachment called 'attachment.bin'. This is just a plain text file with the same old content. Does anybody know how to make it send me plain text messages again? The only notable difference I can see in the messages is this header: < Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii --- > Content-Type: application/octet-stream; charset=us-ascii I certainly haven't deliberately changed any settings, but is there a setting somewhere that controls this header? Does it depend on the settings on intermediate boxes that the mail passes through? The server is running Suse 9.2. This has to be the most ASSININE thing I have ever had to deal with! I have wasted darn near the whole weekend trying to get one stupid a$$ed bootloader to install and nothing on this earth should be this darn difficult! Even using the numbering system that was confimed/agreed to, it still gives me the error 23 statement. The main reason I liked SuSe is because it does mount (automatically) my Windows partition, thus I have access to different files. On Mandriva, although it installs in over half the time, and it's actually WAY faster than 10.2, and the bootloader ACTUALLY works, it's a pain to get the partitions to mount, I have to do a hard shutdown because there's no "restart" or "shutdown" command when you log off, which tales you to the login screen, which doesn't have a way to shutdown or reboot the computer. Ubuntu is a whole story by itself! Maybe in a few years when I'm 70 will Linux FINALLY be ready for prime time! Just think, I haven't even gotten to the HARD parts yet! Anyway, I really do appreciate all the help I have gotten on this. [opensuse] JRE on Firefox 2.0 & SuSE 10.2x64

Hi. I recently installed SuSE 10.2 on a Sun Ultra 40 Workstation and I have noticed that even when I have Java installed on my system (actually I use NetBeans 5.5 to develp Java applications) Firefox isn't able to start applets from a website, instead it tells me that the JRE plugin is needed in order to do so, then I click it to start searching the plugin and tells me that it is not available and a manual installation is needed. I guess that Firefox it's not registered as a browser that JRE should know. Could someone help me to fix this problem??, I think I know how to fix it in Windows XP (Java module in Control Panel) but not for SuSE. [opensuse] Network PMTU -- optimizing performance...

I have a few different computers on my house network. Several have been upgraded to 1Gb ethernet. Doing benchmarkings, I find that a significant part of the speed seems to be related to "per-packet" delays -- I found I could get 2-3 times the performance if I could set two machines to talk to each other with a larger MTU. Having them use a 6000 byte MTU vs. the old max of 1500, made a big difference. However (there has to be a catch, of course), most of the computers in the house don't support jumbo packets. I think some may still be at 100Mb. Fortunately, different speed (10Mb,100Mb,1Gb) cards can all share the same network with 1Gb-1Gb conenctions running fast, but 10Mb-1Gb connections still working -- though significantly slower. :-) I'm having a problem doing the same with the different cards that support different PMTU's. One card supports up to 9000 byte MTU's (I think that's the current max "jumbo" size). I'd __like__ to set each card to it's maximum so each machine pair would use the most efficient MTU possible. Theoretically, TCP/IP does PMTU discovery and was designed to work over different network types using different MTU's. I don't have the kernel param "ip_no_pmtu_disc" enabled, but... it seems the opposite of "no" may not be "yes". ;-( A small PMTU machine ("smallpack") can be logged into a large PMTU machine ("bigpack") and they talk fine (using small packets), but trying to send a file (>MTU), or using a ping packet size > PMTU (like 3000) and the communication is dropped. If both machines are set to use the same PMTU, then all is fine and large ping packets are automatically fragmented. Forcing all cards in the house (including housemate computers) to upgrade to some "same" brand that supports the same jumbo PMTU size isn't really an option. Why isn't PMTU discovery working? Am I missing something obvious? Why does it appear that the MTU's have to be equal on all machines? What part of "discovery" am I not understanding? Even using the ping "-M want" ("do PMTU discovery") does NOT work. Am I missing something obvious? [opensuse] Dell HD Audio Controller on Dell E520 and openSUSE 10.2

Hi Everybody. This past weekend I installed openSUSE 10.2 on a new Dell Dimension E520. So far everything works fairly well - except for the onboard audio which I can't get to work. This is a Dell HD Audio Controller which the installer recognized and loaded the snd_hda_intel module, but the beast won't make a sound.
